Mariah will be appearing on Michael Buble's new holiday special. I have to assume they will do "AIWFCIY" since he covered it for his album. It's crazy he's getting another special for it. He is really selling that thing. What are the total sales now? She will sound A+mazing singing his version. When is the special? I'd actually like an iTunes release of that duet, please. (even before I hear it) I seriously doubt she will sing his version of it. It will either be them doing a duet of her version, or it will start out as his version and then Mariah will come out part way through and it will turn into her version. I just find this so random, though. I mean, it's cool, but why do this random appearance, especially when she has a different, non-holiday song to promote?

I don't think it's random. It's just one performance, that's even being recorded as we speak to air later on. With a guy that's been on a row with his Xmas music, joining the queen if Xmas herself. I don't know how that's a bad thing.
I feel like Mariah needs to do more of this in general. Look when her n John Legend performed Born Again...magic.

Yes, the legacy Mariah created with her Christmas music alone has ensured that she'll be highly relevant every Christmas season for many years to come. It's smart for her to push her Christmas music every season. That is a potential problem I see with her releasing a new mainstream single during the holiday season though; the single will be up against Mariah's own Christmas classics.

^Which is one of the reasons why I don't think she should be releasing a new single this time of the year. She could have easily waited 2 more months.

^ I don't think it stands for anything. It's just the Instagram username of the person who took the picture. 4 hours later and they're still waiting.

^Which is one of the reasons why I don't think she should be releasing a new single this time of the year. She could have easily waited 2 more months. Well, she might be releasing a nice solid song as the first single to put herself on people's radar knowing it is a decent song, but not something she cares gets lost in the holiday mix, and then release an even better single come January/February. If it is a great song and she gets positive reviews and people are liking it, then it sets her up nicely for her second single as long as she has a great second single this time. That has been her onus the second single momentum killer. She needs to make sure she actually has great singles and/or makes the right single choices this time. It isn't a bad ploy to use the good will people usually have for her at this time of year to extend it to her new song. She just has to make sure her new song actually is worthy of that good will. Besides if it is an urban leaning song that will be less effected than say a pop leaning song at this time of year.

I hope they push Merry Christmas II You a bit more this year. Its sales held up well in 2011, but it didn't sell much last year. I think "CTIITAA" and "WCC" could eventually connect with more people in time. Well, she's worth waiting for. Never change, Mimi.

Bubbles can sit there and wait all night, Mariah Carey gave him the lead single that put him on the Christmas map and so kind of her to help him out again. They can't make Christmas albums or performances without the single greatest Xmas song. Withdraw from that annual bank Mimi, no overdraft required its a given.

PLAY- the Legend duet didn't appear on the album- it was reworked with Legend and released as a single year after the album release. I hope you saw one of my most enjoyable Mimi videos of recent times, for "Auld Lang Syne." "Charlie Brown Christmas" is another highlight from MCIIU. Oh ok! I'm going to youtube the album tomorrow and see if its up to par. I feel like I have to indulge in some of #campMariah to fully enjoy. Now I did see that video of her floating through space with the Ghosts of Christmas Past, that is HILARIOUS!

So it's ok to go up to Bill Gates and make him retire cause he's made billions and he's old... Give me a break.. It's wrong what the entertainment industry allows in terms of ageism and as long as there are complacent people accepting it then it will continue. Are you even serious with that comparison? We're talking about pop music. Pop music is heavily image based. Mariah's brand is herself. And who defines image?

It has a different, more laid back vibe than the original Merry Christmas.

Found this Entertainment Weekly review of Merry Christmas. Amongst the highlights: the album is just a showcase for Mariah's "formidable, but cold, vocal chops" and calls AIWFCIY (plus the other original songs) a "standard wannabe". That's fun. Have a good laugh.

Mariah and her team define her image, and the public has the choice to buy it or not. The people who listen to and buy pop music are mostly females in their teens and early 20s. They're not relating to a woman their mother's age singing love songs, nor do they want to see a woman their mother's age dancing around in lingerie in music videos. Call it what you want, but that's the way it is.

Yet you had other robotic singers back then getting a pass.

Entertainment Weekly gave Mariah a bunch of scathing reviews in the 90s. They trashed a bunch of her 90s hits too, including "Dreamlover". They've gotten much less snobby in the past decade or so.

^That's because most of those older critics aren't there anymore and have moved on to something else and they have a group of younger newer critics with a different perspective. It's easy to understand how she lost all of those Grammy noms back in the 90s. Speaking of haters, don't get me started on that Kurt Loder that used to work for MTV. I couldn't stand him. A lot of these critics like him had hidden agendas. Loder's was crystal clear.

Mimi taped an appearance on Senor Buble's holiday special- perhaps a mashup of both their versions of AIWFCIY.

I see now that it was posted above. :)
I'd like to hear them perform a mix of the two versions.

Yet you had other robotic singers back then getting a pass. I think a lot of that was because critics in the 90s just didn't understand her style. It was a new style of singing, and they assumed melodic vocals runs weren't emotional or something. If you notice, critics now complain that her vocals are more reigned in. A lot of critics aren't even properly educated musically, so they don't have an understanding of things like melody. A lot of Mariah's vocal runs play off the main melody, but critics don't even get that.

Entertainment Weekly gave Mariah a bunch of scathing reviews in the 90s. They trashed a bunch of her 90s hits too, including "Dreamlover". They've gotten much less snobby in the past decade or so. It's actually unfair to say "they." Nearly all of the poor EW reviews were by David Browne. When other EW critics reviewed her work, the reviews were a lot better (a B+ for Unplugged, a B for Daydream, and a B+ for Rainbow). Brown is the one who gave Music Box a C+, gave Merry Christmas that low grade, gave "Fantasy" a poor grade, and gave Butterfly a B-. He also made some comment about her in 1990 saying her debut was the most overrated or something. I think EW has been more kind to her in general the past decade because their current writers are people who grew up on Mariah. A lot of critics in the 90s were older white guys who didn't get her.
