The verses are very Gospel-like and for anyone not used to Gospel it might be a bit of an adjustment, I think it's fine. And it's up to #57 on iTunes US!

Some of it reminds me of Kelly Clarkson's "The trouble with Love is".
Among Mariah's songs it reminds me of "Betcha Gonna Know", "Outside", "VOL" and "I Wish You Well".
This is a very good song, not as immediate as #B was, but it's a better song IMO. Well done Mariah!

Elements of it really remind me of another (non-MC) song...but I just can't place it. Particularly the 2nd lines of both the verses and chorus Thank you SO MUCH !! It is exactly this song. I've been scratching my head for like an hour over that plus you've just reintroduced me to a beautiful song I haven't heard for years ;)

The verses are the part that drive me crazy. I am like why are you trying to fit every SAT word and idea into one line for each line of the verses. She could have phrased things a lot better in the verses so it doesn't sound like she is about to lose her breath getting the words out. Vocally she is slaying it on this song the lyrics are great too, she just needed someone to say hey aren't you forgetting the hook and tighten up those verses.

Finally found the hook on this... after several plays i can say that i like it. Vocals > I'm Slayed. Not what i was expecting for the "real" first single but...

I don't really know how to feel about it yet, I just don't think this is single material, it sounds like an album track. There's really no melody or chorus, she kind of sings the verses fast and it doesn't flow with the production, it's really strange that they would choose this as a single. It's not a bad song per se, her vocals sound great at the end, the lyrics are nice, but other than that....it's just boring.
I'll scream if they end up saying this is another buzz single and push the album back even further.

As a "real first single" is it better than Through the Rain?

And it's up to #57 on iTunes US! Wow, it's moving fast. Honestly, I'll be happy with a Hot100 entry no matter what # it might be. I do love the song, I just wish it was left as an album track instead of a single....comparing to what's out now on radio. But you never know really with radio. I wanted Mariah to give me solid material and she did. So I'm happy with that. Does anyone think this album will have a throwback vibe? First #Beautiful now this song. They both have like an old school sound to them.

The problem I find with a fair few of Mariah's recent songs is that she seems too busy trying to pen some witty/trendy play on words for the kids on the street to use...I much prefer the more naturally poetic lyrics that flow beautifully (ala The Roof). That final chorus is definitely a fast-grower though ;)

I think even "Through The Rain" had a stronger melody. Just awful vocals and production.

Does Mariah carry a thesaurus wherever she goes? The words she uses sometimes... I swear she makes them up! Lol...

Why are some referring to this a "first single"? Until there's an album with a tracklist, I don't think we can classify anything as the "first single" at this point.

Yes, I knew the production reminded me of something. This song lyrically is like "I Wish You Well," vocally the singing reminds me a bit of "It's A Wrap" and "The Trouble With Love Is" combined. The production definitely gave me "The Trouble With Love Is" vibes. It does grow on you with listens, and it should bring 90's Mariah fans in for the vocals alone. I think this is a good clean up your image song for her so to speak. Now she just has to make sure the video is decent to lay ground for hopefully a better second single.

I've listened to this three times and all I can think is Mimi give your head a fucking shake, I just wanna grab her shake her and slap her across the face to wake this bitch up. Honestly speaking it pisses me off that people are saying well the vocals are nice, hello! Its Mariah freaking Carey she can drink all night and roll into a studio and give us this any day of the week. The fundamental issue is what happened to the woman and why are her specialty, ballads so freaking horrible, lazy, uninspired? Why is her songwriting so fucking shit all of a sudden? Where is the melody, the hook? I don't care about radio but if you're gonna go in and make a old school ballad then bring tha fucking soul and put your foot in it. I don't expect a lyrical masterpiece but when the lyrics are this bad you dress it up like she use to or Whitney did, u layer that bitch, add inflections, throw in some runs and growls and distract a ho. Now don't misunderstand me this not a horrible song its merely average, boring and not even in the same conversation as Outside or Fly Like A bird, I Wish You Well and many of her album closers, so now we are reduced to giving the people album closers as a second single? Honey get the freaking train back on the tracks. Its taking 9 years to write a album, U can't even be bothered to sing live, U hire dumnuts to manage you, U release Triumphant as a potential lead. Something in Mimi land is fundamentally, and unequivocally haywire. How do we fix this? You guys wouldn't take this shit from a K Michelle 2nd single so don't sit here and tell me its nice. What really grinds my gears is the lambs on twitter acting like she giving us a modern day Vision of Love don't feed the delusion, this sounds like that other lazy ass ballad "Bring It On Home" Maybe its time she gave up the songwriting for a bit and she just does the singing, she wrote but 1 or 2 bars for #Beautiful and that was the only good thing Mimi done for a hot minute.

This might have just gotten me teary. The song is soaking with emotion and raw sadness. Not contrived at all, hopefully the masses will receive that well. And I love the subtlities and nuances in the background, can't wait to listen to it with my apple earpods at work. I'm so happy right now. Thank God for Mariah.

Agree almost 100% with you Coco. If I were here for vocals only regardless of the material, I'd be in the Celine thread bowing down. I love old school ballads and my favorite albums of the year weren't really pushed to radio. I don't care about radio. If Mariah wants to record non-radio-friendly material, fine, but the only reason this isn't radio friendly is because the songwriting is extremely lazy. Otherwise I'd say it's an Urban AC hit at the very least.

Well I think she poured out her heart both lyrically and vocally. Sorry she didn't enough poetic justice for some of you.

There is far too much of a stream of consciousness thing going on in the lyrics which makes it so frustrating for the listener. If she just wants to pour it out release a book of poetry. However when you are a singer writing your own songs, there is a level of expectancy that it is relatively easy to follow. This song is not very easy to follow initially at all. I don't know what has happened with her song writing. It seems to me that she isn't working with people that are roping her in at all. I am shocked the her record company gave her the green light to release this. I would be like at least give me a decent chorus and melody. I am even more shocked that this is a Rodney Jerkins production.

Don't be shady like that Recordman, you're more than free to express you unbridled love but don't question other peoples stance. Its music, its subjective. There is no right and wrong and honestly speaking it would be easy to judge your judgement too but I won't go there today unless you keep the shady digs going.

I'm just not sure.
I love that she wants to release a single that's way out of the norm. And her voice is A+ (But, let's be real... she will never and could never sing that last chorus live) But, the melody is SO APPARENT...... yet she just disregards it completely in the verses. To try to put this song out as an event single or anything other than a for-the-fans bonus track is absurd. I love that she has sold 200 million records, has half a billion to her name, is a pop culture icon.... but, I don't like that she knows it. She loses focus on the music. That being said... I like it. (But it'll be out of iTunes 200 by Wednesday and probably won't return)

Nice melody, great vocals (the ending >>>), good production but a bit too wordy. B*tch should've kept it simple and kept it moving.
Where's the chorus though? :| That's where she lost me with this. They tried it with this hookless song as a radio single, are they kidding?
I like it though. It's more of an album cut, but it's a great song. Glad to know that she's still about writing from the heart.

I didn't mean to come across as judgmental nor is my love unbridled, it just seemed really harsh. Maybe she's the reason that expectations are so high with how masterful she has been for the past almost 25 years but you really went in on her. Perhaps she's writing from where she's at now as a woman who trying to get comfortable in herself and relax into her happiness, ironically trying to let go.

This just doesn't cut it for me... The song should have been called "Letting Go"... And Mariah should have let go of this being a single..

For me, I think she is trying too hard to be relevant and young - like I said before, her main aim in songwriting nowadays seems to be to coin that latest phrase the kids are quoting on Facebook or for an entry in Urban Dictionary...at the complete cost of meaningful lyrics and any hint of a melody.
The good news is that I've a renewed love for The Trouble With Love...so every cloud and all that !
