I know Mariah claims she's all about the music but I feel like she's very comfortable with her life and status in the industry at this point and isn't even interested in putting in a high amount of effort anymore. It happens to most artists when they get into their 40s-50s. I was hearing rumors from people around her around early summer 2012 that she was in a rut and barely had anything recorded when they put "Triumphant". I believe it now. "Almost Home" was decent, and "#Beautiful" was really good, and she had a minimal role in both songs. I still love her voice, so I'd rather her give up the writing if we're going to get sloppy writing from her at this point.

She does do that young writing crap too much any more but I really didn't think it was a problem in this song.

Recordman the idea and vision of the song could have been great, I wanted a full on vocal with old school elements but where it went off the train tracks is the lyrics, its seemed contrived and emotional and rawness was stripped because those lyrics are really bad. My main issue is just the song its the musical and decision making and where its headed, I just feel there is maybe a writers block issue going on over the past few years, maybe she is lacking inspiration but truth be told I find there is something missing and fundamentally wrong lately.

^Some of us don't mind "Triumphant." :) I've only listened to this new single once, so I have to see how it holds up.

We will have to wait and see what she puts up after this song. It isn't like everything is bad about this song. It is mainly the lyrics and structure that cause concern. Her vocals and the production are nice I think.

Well, "Triumphant" was her own release. She could have been more prominent throughout, but she did have the chorus and bridge, and she made sure to he beard throughout the verses, even if it was more background .:)
Have we met, Bandz? Sorry I forgot. :) When's the last Mimi single that I "trashed"? Seriously.

If Mariah wanted to release a soulful sounding ballad as the latest lead single then she should've recorded something along the lines of "Circles," that song is damn near perfection. Not saying she should rehash it, but at least record something with a chorus and melody that's memorable.

Holy sh!t, this is the worst release by Mariah. She just has no freakin clue how to make decent music anymore.
I even prefer Triumphant over this. I am surprised this has reached top 40 on iTunes but i reckon these are the die hard fans.
I have lost hope that Mariah will ever release music i can really like.
You will enter into the category of Toni Braxton, Monica, Brandy etc.
Not looking forward to this album at all if they think this song is the best to release now.

You will enter into the category of Toni Braxton, Monica, Brandy etc. Lol. Please. I don't like the recent material either ("#Beautiful" aside), but Mariah exceeded that level years ago. She's made 100x the impact those three have.

The melody of this just goes nowhere for me... I HATE how she speaks the lyrics instead of singing it... Im a huge MC fan but this is my least favorite single from hers EVER... Radio will not touch this!!

Oh yeah and best all around vocal since TEOM. I also love the Gospel/Jazz styled abandon of the verses.

The production and melody are blah. Execution is lacking which I'm shocked by that. I see where they going with it but it just didn't mesh well. I like it though, oddly enough. I don't care for the talk singing verses though. However, this surprisely got me excited for the album lol. I expect some old school soul now. Come on Mimi, bring it

I've listened to this three times and all I can think is Mimi give your head a f**king shake, I just wanna grab her shake her and slap her across the face to wake this bitch up. The fundamental issue is what happened to the woman and why are her specialty, ballads so freaking horrible, lazy, uninspired? Why is her songwriting so f**king s**t all of a sudden? Where is the melody, the hook? I don't care about radio but if you're gonna go in and make a old school ballad then bring tha f**king soul and put your foot in it. I have to completely agree with all of this. Her decisions have been all over the place these last few years, and her surrounding herself with only her friends makes things worse. She needs people who aren't so scared of being fired or so starstruck that they can't tell her the truth tea about her songs, outfits, other questionable things. I love that Mariah wants to write her own songs instead of hiring others to, but she seems to have lost her way recently. I don't think she will let someone else write for her now. If the new song is the best she has to offer right now, it might be better that she not release that album soon.

This is fantastic for winter time. I dig the production and the vocals, it's a grower though. I'm just getting the melody.
Unfortunately this won't do much. Hopefully they have something more worthy of a first single ready even though we've already had "Triumphant" and "#Beautiful".

People are trashing this as "lazy?" WTF? Fine if you don't like it, but how is it lazy?
As a general song, I love this. That intro is gorgeous, and in general the sparse production is terrific. The piano (those chords!) and strings are really strong, and we haven't really had a stark doo wop ballad like this from her before. It is similar to "Vision of Love" and "Forever" in some ways, but this isn't nearly as 'produced' as those songs. This is also a more emotional vocal than those songs had. When you then combine this with the Motown update that was "#Beautiful," I am really feeling the artistic direction that Mariah is going in right now.
As a single, though, I am puzzled by this choice. The chorus does not stand out, as many of you have noted, and it's really important to have a good hook in today's musical climate. Maybe Mariah is saying she doesn't give a f*ck about commercial success with this release, and if that's the case I commend her.
I find it odd IDJ hasn't sent out a press release for this, nor have we gotten any information on radio adds. It's like it's a half single; social media promotion and an iTunes release, but no label promotion or radio adds. It's puzzling.
