People are trashing this as "lazy?" WTF? Fine if you don't like it, but how is it lazy? As a general song, I love this. That intro is gorgeous, and in general the sparse production is terrific. The piano (those chords!) and strings are really strong, and we haven't really had a stark doo wop ballad like this from her before. It is similar to "Vision of Love" and "Forever" in some ways, but this isn't nearly as 'produced' as those songs. This is also a more emotional vocal than those songs had. When you then combine this with the Motown update that was "#Beautiful," I am really feeling the artistic direction that Mariah is going in right now. As a single, though, I am puzzled by this choice. The chorus does not stand out, as many of you have noted, and it's really important to have a good hook in today's musical climate. Maybe Mariah is saying she doesn't give a f*ck about commercial success with this release, and if that's the case I commend her. I find it odd IDJ hasn't sent out a press release for this, nor have we gotten any information on radio adds. It's like it's a half single; social media promotion and an iTunes release, but no label promotion or radio adds. It's puzzling. that's because I bet they will say it was just a gift to fans who have waited so long for the album. The real first single is coming soon ...

For me, this is like a combination of "Like You'll Never See Me Again", "Can't Take That Away (Mariah's Theme)", and "Trouble With Love". It's really growing on me, but I still think "Almost Home" is my favorite of the three released this year.

The more I listen to this, the more I hear 90's Mariah, early to mid 90's Mariah even. Vanishing teas, the production is really amazing and her voice is so strong. The public might shock you and love this.

A surprising review from Slate....
"Amid much anticipation from fans, the singer has finally premiered her next single on her Facebook page. Was it worth the wait?
Yes it was. “The Art of Letting Go,” along with “#Beautiful,” suggests that Carey’s next effort may be a solid one yet. Her voice remains strong and the track, sung to an ex-lover (“Your audacity is too much to be believed/ So go to Mimi on your contacts, press delete”), harkens back to her best old ballads, with its ’60s-style pop instrumentation (à la “Forever”), assertive lyrics (as in “We Belong Together”), and powerful climax (like “Vision of Love”).
Familiar enough to please old fans, it’s also a pleasant sign of things to come."

Not saying that'll for sure be the case for TAOLG, but I just wouldn't be surprised if it will be at this point.

Slant Magazine: "Mariah Carey's fourteenth studio album, The Art of Letting Go, has had an epic roll-out—and not in a good way. The then-untitled album's first single, "Triumphant (Get 'Em)," was released way back in August of 2012 and landed with a thud, while "#Beautiful," which dropped nine months later and was christened the project's new lead single, failed to crack the Top 10. Known for her quick turn-around (she released seven albums in the '90s alone), Mimi is apparently having trouble learning the new album's titular skill, having pushed the release of The Art of Letting Go from last July to sometime next year. Perhaps motherhood has made the singer a little nervous about showing her latest baby to the world. Or maybe she's just hoping third time's the charm. Six months after "#Beautiful," Mariah has unveiled the title track from the album, a string-laden piano ballad with a simple, demo-style loop that throws back to her early days. "I'm makin' a statement," she starts, her vocals nearly as scratchy as the track's faux vinyl surface noise. While the reliability of Mariah's upper register might be a thing of the past, she shows off her less-fêted lower range throughout and takes it to church in the song's final minute. And though the lack of a discernable hook means it's unlikely to rehabilitate Mariah's former chart glory, this one was clearly intended for the lambs. Contemporary lyrics like "Go to 'Mimi' on your contacts...press delete" and the single's über-airbrushed Sports Illustrated-style cover art don't quite square with the track's old-school soul vibe, but no matter: If this and "#Beautiful" are a sign of what's to come from the album, Mimi can put her nerves to rest." www.slantmagazine.com/house/2013/11/single-review-mariah-carey-the-art-of-letting-go

Well before we even heard it, I thought since so many were worried this would get lost in the shuffle this just might be an attempt at getting some nice goodwill out there for Mariah with people. Sure this isn't the catchiest song out there, but I am ok with that given this isn't the time of year you want to release a smash song unless it is a holiday song. Having said that, she better have a killer second single/real first single? This was a decent start. Vocally, she is right where I want her to be, but the song writing needs to be kicked up a notch. I want to be able to discern some hooks.

This is a great Mariah track. It's exactly what she needs. Yeah, this will not be a pop hit, but it's a seller! I know my sister will buy Mariah's next album when she hears this song, it's just a song that fans will love and will make people buy the album. Oh, and Mariah is singing this SO WELL, it's surprising actually.

I think what would've made it better would be more strings or piano or drums in the first two choruses. I think the music from verse to chorus is so similar that people are dismissing it quickly. Man, I like this a lot. I'm loving the live instrumentation and the backing vocals are on point and not over-bearing. It sounds more cohesive (in terms of how many takes it might've been to record this) than most of her songs recently.
Is it just me, or is the the ballad version of "It's A Wrap"??

Sorry y'all, but I am loving this. I wasn't blown away on first listen, but I've had it on repeat most of the day at work.
Now that I've got headphones on, it really does sound amazing. I wish the organ was louder!!! It really reminds me of the stuff on "Emotions" with that sound.
This song isn't instant, and I don't even care if it's a hit, I just want an album!!! This is the longest we've ever had to wait it feels like.
But yeah, overall, I am VERY pleased with this and I'm sure in a week I will be all about it.

The more I listen to this, the more I hear 90's Mariah, early to mid 90's Mariah even. Lol maybe I should have specified a bit more. I meant through nuances and background vocals. Although I feel strong Butterfly/Daydream throwback throughout and those low notes are definitely Daydream quality.

After reading the comments here, I expected to hate the song, but I'm liking this. I love that Mariah's using her full voice throughout the track- she sounds great. The climax is great, too.
Sure, the song could use more of a hook, and it's not the best choice for a single, but as a song I think it's good.

Didn't really care for this upon the first listen. But it definitely gets better on repeat! The last 1:15 really shines.

When does this go to radio? I hope she has a great video planned for this song. I would like to see some effort behind this; although, I don't expect much from it concerning radio. I don't really want a H.A.T.E.U. rehash in a bathing suit for a video.

If Mariah wanted to release a soulful sounding ballad as the latest lead single then she should've recorded something along the lines of "Circles," that song is damn near perfection. Not saying she should rehash it, but at least record something with a chorus and melody that's memorable. I agree My biggest problem with this song is that it has NO HOOK at all I like ending when she pops off and belts but I just CANT even remember the song melody of some key word from the chorus It is a song that just passed by I mean, it almost sound like a track that there is no chorus and no repetition. I really cant remember any of it

the main problem for me with this song is that it's like she's just talking instead of really singing the verses which it's kinda annoying cause it feels like someone's is reading a poem with some instruments playing on the background. and also I'm really afraid she's going to mess it up everything with the video trying to be sexy in the water

Ok.... she hasn't really said it's necessarily about anyone in particular (and I don't think the time frame lines up)....
BUT, in my mind, she is writing and singing about Kelly Price. The lyrics actually fit perfectly to the shade that Kelly has been throwing at Mariah. Plus, in that Wendy interview, Kelly said Mariah "wasn't ready for me to go". Every line (minus "the box of your possessions") could apply to her.

She said this song is an emotional culmination of what she has gone through over the past few years - so who's this about? She's been with the same guy since like 2008...
