Ok.... she hasn't really said it's necessarily about anyone in particular (and I don't think the time frame lines up).... BUT, in my mind, she is writing and singing about Kelly Price. The lyrics actually fit perfectly to the shade that Kelly has been throwing at Mariah. Plus, in that Wendy interview, Kelly said Mariah "wasn't ready for me to go". Every line (minus "the box of your possessions") could apply to her. funny that Afanassief always comes in my mind when she sings "I hope you don't get no ideas 'bout reuniting baby..". but I know it's not about him LOL Haha, me too. Walter A first came to my mind when I heard that line. Anyways, I just love this song. It reminds me of early 90's or mid 90's Mariah....probably because of the more straight-forward vocals. And, it's great that this song has no whispery voice. The general casual fans probably will like Mariah's voice hear..we'll see.

Well..at first I pretty much didn't get it. Yes, the vocals are fantastic, but it definitely is not some instant hook type song. It is definitely a grower though... I'm liking it more and more...
I too feel that she could have been much less wordy in the verses...I'm not sure what that part is about. But I do think it's a cool song...not taking long to grow on me at all actually.

At least you capitalized Apple the second time. Do you work for Apple, by any chance? Just wondering. I think Mariah wrote this song to you, her dear lamb, in order to help you let go of what I like to call Promotion Without Pay. She was so right about this song being universal. :'(

As much as I like the song, I have to wonder what the strategy behind the release is. Clearly this won't do much on the charts, so promoting it as a single on all formats would be foolish. I agree with a few other posters who think that if the reaction to the song isn't good, they'll treat the song as a teaser for the album. Besides, didn't Mariah mention that she's still working on a song with Nas that's "one of people's favorite records?"
This song still has me pumped for the album, though. Though it's not as melodic as her biggest hits, her vocal delivery keeps me interested, and it just works for me. It's a nice change from all the clicks from Memoirs and the tinniness of a few of the TEOM songs.

JD said the Facebook debut wasn't to bypass radio, but just to connect more with the fans around the world.
Did anyone ask Mimi during the chat about a video for the single?

"The Art of Letting Go" doesn't sound like it will do anything (hopefully I'm wrong), so she needs to slay the rest of the year with her Christmas music, like she does every holiday season, and come hard next year.

When does this go to radio? I hope she has a great video planned for this song. I would like to see some effort behind this; although, I don't expect much from it concerning radio. I don't really want a H.A.T.E.U. rehash in a bathing suit for a video. We haven't heard anything about a radio add date, or a video. On top of that IDJ hasn't even released a press statement. It's clear to me this is all something JD pushed and got Mariah on board for without getting label consent/support. I don't blame IDJ. Mariah already pushed the album back once, and she admitted today she is recording two more songs for it. The label probably doesn't want to make a move until they have a completed album.

I feel like the Mariah/JD team is going to cause a huge rift with the label. My fear is that she's going to jump ship and stick with JD.

Is it just me, or is the the ballad version of "It's A Wrap"?? This is exactly what I am thinking too! This like the final installation of the trilogy of Mine Again - It's A Wrap - The Art of Letting Go Loving this song so much right now!

The more I see her language around this, I don't think this is a lead single or what they are releasing as a single. Maybe this will be sent to Urban AC and Adult AC (much like Almost Home), and she'll release something more radio-friendly in January? That is traditionally when she releases music.
The song has grown on me, but I still think it's not single material. The music from 2:58-3:22 feels more single-ish... if that had been the feel throughout the song, they could try for radio. But the rest of the song, while beautiful, feels sleepy. Reminds of My Saving Grace for some reason... don't know why.
I do think the song is pretty, and her showcasing her vocals has gotten my pumped for the album. Feels very TEOM. Maybe that's all she was trying to do? Get people more excited about the album so that the next single can smash?

Random thought... it's probably off but would be totally awesome: Maybe the lead single is called "The Art of..." or "The Art"... that would be pretty cool and nifty. That would open the album. Letting Go would close the album. Hence the album would be called The Art of Letting Go.

Who launches an adult single in November? It's just all really weird.

Best part of this song is its released at a time when nobody cares anyways, plus we have AIWFCIY and hopefully in February we get a fun, upbeat 3rd release before the album comes out. Even though that seems like a lot of singles once the album drops we will be lucky to get a 4th single.

Having bought the song and listened to it some on the drive into work just now, it's growing on me. There are nice elements to it - particularly the second half (like immediately as the 2nd chorus ends...). It isn't single-worthy - I could have seen it as the title, opening track of the album. The live instruments and low-notes are very welcome though.

So after smoking a joint and listening to it 3 more times, the only thing I'l take back is that it doesnt have emotion or soul, it does but the lyrics take away from it. Still dont like it but I dont hate it. Its boring and basic but its not Triumphant bad. I wish she gave that incredible voice better lyrics on this to let it flourish and if she only structured it better then it could have come across alot better, and that ending while vocally and studio impressive feels like its the ending to every ballad this past decade or so.

There has to be some kind of support from the label in terms of putting it on iTunes, correct? I mean, an act couldn't put it on iTunes itself, with the tag "Island Def Jam Music Group"- at least I think.
It's possible that the label isn't "thrilled," contrary to what may be portrayed as good relations- not the label's upset with Mimi's injury (that would be cold), but the fact that it put a lot of support and promo behind "#Beautiful," and then the album didn't get released (and this was after touting an upcoming album back in summer 2012).
Does Island want to put out yet another press releases and use the words "first advance"/"lead"/"first" single from the album, when there's no official plan/date? Probably not. Even the label probably finds some of the humor/frustration that fans feel in that respect.

It was bound to happen though. MC has WRITTEN 12 albums. Writer's block at that point is a given. Hell, most people would've went through that eons ago. I just think she needs to get with a strong co-writer. Someone to help with melody AND lyrics.

Even the label probably finds some of the humor/frustration that fans feel in that respect. This is stuff I have been saying! The label is understandably frustrated that Mariah hasn't turned in a completed album, and I can understand that frustration considering the time and money that has already been put into the project. This release of "TAOLG" feels almost rogue, like JD and Mariah just ran with it either against the label's wishes, or almost without them knowing. Of course the label has thrown a few concessions in order to keep a little goodwill with Mariah, but at the same time they aren't going full force with the promotion. It would be dumb for them to do so considering the single, the time of year, and the fact that Mariah told us she decided to add 2 new songs. My fears for Mariah are these: 1. All of these single releases and delays will have killed all momentum for the album by the time it finally drops. 2. Mariah has ruined any positive bargaining position she had for a new contract. This is the last album on her current contract, and I can't imagine IDJ (or any big label) will want to work with her considering her lack of attention to deadlines and her lack of big sales with the past few albums.

Wow so much drama and speculation over a single that was released not even 24 hours ago. Maybe Mariah is doing what she loves - giving music to her fans. She could easily do this without a label and still get support. Plus, she has a family, injuries to nurse back to health, and other obligations that we shouldn't denigrate her for taking care of as she does. Don't get your knickers in a twist, y'all. An album will come out when it is ready. Drama much? Lambing drama, indubitably!

I am worried for the management aspects of this project, but I don't necessarily view releasing this as a mistake. Releasing a song at a time of year when Mariah has a lot of goodwill from people isn't a bad idea per se. The song doesn't harm her career. I in fact am pretty excited for an album if we are going to get vocals like the ones she has delivered on her last two songs. Most reviews of TAOLG that I have read are touting this as the follow up single to #Beautiful which is fine in my eyes. If I were her, I would do a few strategic performances of the song and follow it up with one of her Christmas songs. You never know she might tweak the live performances of this song to make it more listener friendly. I think this song would be great paired up with Christmas Time Is In The Air Again or When Christmas Comes.
