CHARMBRACELET will forever be known as the diamond in the rough. The lyrics on that album are some of the best and I hope she can give us another dose of that MASTERPIECE C=MC^2.

If she'd re-record the vocals (lbr, no mastering can save them), it'd be a great album.

"Oh Santa" would be a lot better if she didn't mumble so much; I don't know what she is singing for a lot of the verses. It also doesn't really have a melody for the chorus. As for "Clown," I love that jam! It would definitely be better with some remastering, but it's still good. The lyric and melody are great, and I actually think the airy vocal works well in being casually dismissive. If she sang more angrily, then it would mean it was all affecting her. I don't necessarily want her to sing it angrily, but I mean at times you don't even understand what she is singing. She could sing it in full voice and still sound dismissive.

What parts of "Clown" are hard to understand? I never had a problem with that one like, say, "Oh Santa" or "The Roof."

I guess you and I are just different because I completely understood all the parts in "Oh Santa" and "The Roof", but there are parts of the second verse of "Clown" that are hard to understand and other parts of the song where the words just blend together.

I liked "Oh Santa" and thought it really picked up in the last minute or two, but I do agree that Mariah sung it pretty quickly. It may have been hard for the average listener to hear everything she was saying.

LOL. Mariah has ALWAYS had a problem with enunciation. It's just one of the things her protege shares with her. She also swallows some of her words. As much as Mariah is my favorite singer of all time, there have always been things I have found to be a bit "off" with her vocal stylings, which is why I think she isn't for everyone.

It's only been since Mariah sings in an airy voice more and that quality declined that some of her songs are hard to understand. I don't think anyone off the debut or, say, Daydream are hard to understand.

There's Got To Be A Way comes to mind…OH!! If we work together…blah blah blah…see tomorrow! I Stay In Love has the epic "I try to fart like a whale" line, but yeah, that's more recent. In One Sweet Day, is it "patient and we'll see you in heaven?" Second verse of Fantasy also comes to mind. I mean, yes, most people can understand Mariah if they actually listen to her and pay attention but I have definitely heard people try to sing some of her classics and mess up the words.

I think the one thing about Mariah that makes her such a great singer is the fact that she has a very pleasant tone to her voice that makes you want to listen. The thing that has always bothered me about Mariah when it comes to singing is the fact that she doesn't see anything wrong with putting songs out there where you can't understand the lyrics she is singing. For someone who prides herself on writing her own songs, she sure as hell doesn't take any pride in enunciating the words clearly at times so we understand said lyrics. I am like does she not go back and hear the fact that some of the words can't be understood?
I think my biggest complaint about Mariah vocally more so live these days is rather than sing a song straight forward, she feels she has to go cute and throw in these random vocal embellishments. She usually will be singing in full voice and then end each line of the verse in her upper register or inexplicably end it in a whisper or vice versa be whispering a song and end the line of the verse in full voice/belt. It is part of what makes me cringe when she performs Oh Holy Night now is she will be singing in full voice and then just end each line in a verse softly rather than continue in her full voice. Granted her voice isn't where it used to be, but I don't think she does herself any favors vocally by making these abrupt changes vocally.

Her vocal timbre is what sets her apart from pretty much everyone. I was listening to Kelly Clarkson's holiday album, and she hits the notes and all, but man does her belting sound forced/unpleasant. I think the issue for Mariah live is the way she records her songs. In the studio she can do a line as many times as needed to perfect. She also does a lot of vocal layering. As has been said, Mariah's melismatic runs are incredibly difficult, and the way she layers them is sometimes literally impossible to replicate live. But then it's like Mariah still feels a need to replicate it live, and we end up with this mess of live and pre-recorded vocals, and then live vocals that sound unnatural.

^ you nailed it with your entire post.
Also, in the past Mariah use to just pick the main vocal of the song while the back up singers would do the other layering vocals. Which was fine. Now, not only it she adding more layering in her recordings but she also wants to do them all when performing, which is impossible and it's one of the reasons she looks uncomfortable on stage.

The irony is she doesn't even realize I think how much her fans might appreciate more stripped down versions of her songs where she isn't trying to fit every note she ever recorded in a song live. Hopefully, she is at least creating some simplistic songs for her to sing this go round with the new album.

YASS at her doing "Joy To The World". Her rendition is the most AMAZING, and I never thought she would do it live again. Everything is right and perfect in lambworld right now. :'(

I like that she's doing the intro again. Those newer versions had nothing on the original. It's also nice to hear her without a track on AIWFCIY even though they'll probably dub one in anyway.

In some markets, the Rockefeller show is 2 hours, isn't it? Just one hour on the East coast, it looks.
Mimi's become a regular on the show- is this her third or fourth consecutive year?

I don't worry about her voice in live performances anymore. It seems the past 12 months have been a huge step in the right direction for her.

I wonder how close Merry Christmas is to 6x platinum. I would guess that it was also available in BMG and Columbia House in the 90's. Soundscan has it at a bit over 5.3 million. I don't think it's unrealistic to think it's shipped 6x platinum at this point.
It's last certification came 11 years ago.

When she gets her whispery voice right it works, but when it goes wrong it goes horribly wrong.
