Mariah is an artist in her 40s who held a significant amount of airplay for about 15 years. Why would anyone think that in 2013 she would be getting large radio updates? How many people in the top 20 on the Airplay chart have been around since 1990? This should be common sense at this point. Not to mention, the only format the song has been sent to is Adult Contemporary (and the song is released on a label other than the one she's signed to). Her last AC only single, "Right To Dream," didn't do much either. I think it got sent to pop too, right? It hasn't really had a push (adds date) anywhere, but it is under Cool New Music, at least.

My point was that as much as people here like to shout "AGEISM!!!!" at radio not playing older artists, I think it has more to do with how long the artist has been around rather than age itself. Even the biggest artists don't really have pop-chart hits that extend more than 25 years with the exception of a few but many big names are lucky to reach 10 years. Rolling Stones - 1964?-1994: 30 years Paula Abdul - 1989?(or whenver)-1995: 6 years Michael Jackson (solo) - 1979? - 2001: 22 years? Celine Dion - 1990-2002: 12 years Cyndi Lauper - 1984-1991?: 7 years Duran Duran - 1981?-1997: 16 years Mariah Carey - 1990-? I think it's interesting to look at some of the timespans and be able to use that sort-of average to determine how much longer some of today's big names are expected to stay around. Britney Spears - 1998-? : 15 years so far Christina Aguilera - 1999-? : 14 years right now Destiny's Child - 1998-2005? Beyonce - 2002-? 11 years solo so far Matchbox Twenty - 1996-2012: 12 years Obviously this isn't based on a whole lot but it's interesting just to see how they compare. Britney and Christina have had pretty lengthy careers with relatively few breaks in between compared to, say, Cher, who had many years between some of her hits, or even Michael Jackson, whose solo career was extended by nearly a decade despite only have 3 hits from 1994-2001. So when people talk about Christina flopping at pop radio right now, yeah, it might be embarrassing or whatever you want to say but she's also been around for longer than a lot of big names so it's pretty much expected that pop radio will move on from her. It's all a matter of how the artist themselves choose to deal with that. Change it up and move to a new focus like Rod Stewart or Cyndi Lauper? Keep trying with pop? Or whatever. The biggest spans that I can think of would be Elton John (1970-2000 - in fact he was in the top 40 every calendar year during that time) The biggest one of them all might be Frank Sinatra who last hit in 1980 but was on Billboard's first singles chart in 1940

What spans are you counting? Top ten hits? Or top 40 hits? Or hot 100 at all?
It's an interesting discussion.
Regarding ageism, when it comes to the top of the singles charts, the last solo artist to be over 40 and hit #1 was actually Madonna way back in 2000 with "Music." There have only been 4 other artists since then over 40 who hit #1 and all of them did it on collaborations with younger artists:
-Wanz (51) on "Thrift Shop"
-Maroon 5 actually just managed it as their drummer is 42, although everyone else in the band is in their early 30s.
-Dr. Dre on Eminem's "Crack a Bottle" in 2009 (Dre was 44)
-Jay-Z literally had his 40th birthday while "Empire State of Mind" was at #1
Updated with Wanz, thanks to 2m.

Nice catch -- I had no idea who that person is!
So maybe we're in for an older artist renaissance.

I was mostly counting CHR/Pop but the Hot 100 Top 40 is another good indicator, and I didn't usually count songs where the artist was a featured artist unless it was nearly equal.

What if a video of a baby fighting with a cat, for example, got 200 million views in a week and an old album track by Aaron Carter was played in the background? Would that song go #1 on the Hot 100?

Better: The video is 1 min long but it has 6 tracks of the album each playing for 10s because someone was searching for one track on the background. He'll have the top 6 songs on the Hot 100. Beatles who?

Yep, and it would get several hundred thousand chart points making it one of the biggest songs of the year.

No. It's only been sent to AC where it has a whopping 15 spins!

^But, as mentioned, it's getting some play (as little as it may be) outside of AC. Any station can access a song with ease these days and play it. Remember back in the day when radio played "Into the Groove" off of a recording of MTV? Warner never officially sent the track to radio or promoted it. Then, when it was released commercially, radio played it off that.

^The question was about an add date at Top 40 radio. There has not been one at Top 40 radio.
We really don't need an add date lecture from you. We know. #brokenrecord

About that age thing: Eminem has been around for 14 years and will be huge for 5 years at least I believe. Also Jay-Z has a long long career as a hitmaker and radio will still play whatever he decides to release.

It is getting pop airplay, though.

That is true about a track being sent to radio- that's different from an adds date. bigham- no lectures, and I know you'll throw out any snide remark to give it a "clever" number symbol- ahem, hashtag. In fact, what are ya doing here? Haul your arse outta here and get back to tweeting even more recording acts to get their albums certified! (Disclaimer: My comment is in jest; areyouready and I have known each other for years and are friendly off this forum)

I think people are getting carried away with the youtube thing. In the long run it won't be as bad as people think it will be As long as they stop counting videos that don't play at least 50% of the song, it won't be so bad. "Harlem Shake" has yet to earn its time at #1 by any reasonable calculation.

If someone plays a VEVO video but turn it off after 5 seconds, does that count as a play?

Perhaps they should look at how YouTube calculates an individual play (I'm actually not sure if they account for somebody starting a video or finishing the whole thing) and go with that, to make sure everybody's on the same page.

Not to mention the labels just getting slammed for over counting Youtube views. Youtube had to take away millions/billions of actual youtube views from come major labels.
