"Stay" is shaping to be one of Rihanna's biggest hits (deservedly so). It should be interesting to see who reaches #1 first, Justin Timberlake or Bruno Mars. A couple of weeks ago I would have said Bruno Mars, now I am not so sure.

As for the #1 on Billboard's HOT 100, I see no reason to place "Harlem Shake" anywhere but #1 with "Thrift Shop" and "When I Was Your Man" at #2 and #3.

"Almost Home" should see a sales boost when the movie opens and all that, but it probably won't be a top 10 hit or anything.

Mariah is an artist in her 40s who held a significant amount of airplay for about 15 years. Why would anyone think that in 2013 she would be getting large radio updates?

How many people in the top 20 on the Airplay chart have been around since 1990? This should be common sense at this point.

Not to mention, the only format the song has been sent to is Adult Contemporary (and the song is released on a label other than the one she's signed to). Her last AC only single, "Right To Dream," didn't do much either.

Not just being 40+ but roughly 20 years (I guess closer to 18?) of generating hits continuously is a long time and will slow down at some point as it does for everybody.

Sooner rather than later, no matter how awesome the material, older artists fall out of favor with the next generation. It isn't ageism per se, it is who the younger demos can relate to; (their peers, or their parents). Otherwise, Phil Collins and Diana Ross would still be cranking out big CHR hits.

Mimi's tracks is getting a few spins outside of AC (where its Mediabase audience is only 0.115 of the total). All stations can access a song, if a label doesn't officially "send" it to them. But, yah, in conjunction with age, the number of years an act cranks out big hits doesn't last forever, no matter how successful the act was in the past. Outside of a core fanbase, the anticipation isn't nearly as strong as it was in their heyday.

Olivia Newton-John is a good example- she was the most successful female hitmaker from the 70s into the early 80s- and the hits just stopped coming, even though she was releasing new material. There's no avoiding it.

Name any act and do a time span of their first and last pop hit. There is a period where it ends. Madonna might be one of the longest I can think of with 29 years. Even someone like Rod Stewart, whose first was in 1973? His most recent pop hit was 1997. 24 years. (As an aside, he's had a successful albums career since then, proving that pop radio success is only one aspect).

If you count Steven Tyler on a technicality, you could have 1976 to 2011. 35 years.

It's funny that you mention this just when Tim McGraw reaches the top 20 on Mediabase airplay. He's over 40 and has been around for 20 years. Country is way more forgiving on age though.

As far as others with long spans that I can think of, Santana had his resurgance close to the 30 year mark. Barbra Streisand has had a really long career, though her success recently has been on the album charts.

It's interesting to me that so many artists are close in or at 15 years and still going right now - Britney, Justin, Usher, Beyonce, Christina-ish. :)

Cher is an anomaly. Her hits had dried up twice (post 1979 and post 1991) and then "Believe" came out. But it was more of a 'one hit wonder' novelty hit that didn't lead to a continued presence at CHR.

Santana was a legitimate comeback; a very strange one, placing vocal emphasis on younger artists.

Elton John and Madonna had incredible runs at pop radio through a myriad of shifting generations and tastes. So did Michael Jackson.

This only highlights how extraordinary Madonna's career is. Nobody else who started out 20-30 years ago apart from maybe MJ (if he hadn't died and decided to make a musical comeback with some high profile guests) could generate big hype and manage to get that kind of exposure for a new single.

And I honestly think she can still get a hit, she just needs THE song, basically another "Hung Up"-level of undeniable smash. Her digital sales were strong the first couple of weeks and the single went Top 10 in almost 20 countries based on that initial interest alone, she is still Madonna.

My point was that as much as people here like to shout "AGEISM!!!!" at radio not playing older artists, I think it has more to do with how long the artist has been around rather than age itself. Even the biggest artists don't really have pop-chart hits that extend more than 25 years with the exception of a few but many big names are lucky to reach 10 years.

Rolling Stones - 1964?-1994: 30 years
Paula Abdul - 1989?(or whenver)-1995: 6 years
Michael Jackson (solo) - 1979? - 2001: 22 years?
Celine Dion - 1990-2002: 12 years
Cyndi Lauper - 1984-1991?: 7 years
Duran Duran - 1981?-1997: 16 years
Mariah Carey - 1990-?

I think it's interesting to look at some of the timespans and be able to use that sort-of average to determine how much longer some of today's big names are expected to stay around.

Britney Spears - 1998-? : 15 years so far
Christina Aguilera - 1999-? : 14 years right now
Destiny's Child - 1998-2005?
Beyonce - 2002-? 11 years solo so far
Matchbox Twenty - 1996-2012: 12 years

Obviously this isn't based on a whole lot but it's interesting just to see how they compare. Britney and Christina have had pretty lengthy careers with relatively few breaks in between compared to, say, Cher, who had many years between some of her hits, or even Michael Jackson, whose solo career was extended by nearly a decade despite only have 3 hits from 1994-2001. So when people talk about Christina flopping at pop radio right now, yeah, it might be embarrassing or whatever you want to say but she's also been around for longer than a lot of big names so it's pretty much expected that pop radio will move on from her. It's all a matter of how the artist themselves choose to deal with that. Change it up and move to a new focus like Rod Stewart or Cyndi Lauper? Keep trying with pop? Or whatever.
