TAYLOR SWIFT β 22: 29.654 (+ 1.597) ICONA POP β I Love It f/Charli XCX: 26.967 (+ 1.027) FALL OUT BOY β My Songs Know What You Didβ¦: 26.670 (+ 0.456) MACKLEMORE & RYAN LEWIS β Can't Hold Us f/Ray Dalton: 23.776 (+ 1.903) These will be the smashes of the summer. I'd say these are more spring hits than summer hits. Spring just started a few days ago lol. Also, is Harlem Shake going to finally be replaced at No. 1 this week?

ICONA POP β I Love It f/Charli XCX: 27.261 (+ 0.294) FALL OUT BOY β My Songs Know What You Didβ¦: 26.989 (+ 0.319) Are you f**king kidding me? These songs are HITS and are doing really well on iTunes, why the hell is radio so resistant? An even more extreme example is "Radioactive" which is now #6 on ITunes, but is receiving virtually no airplay outside of Alternative Rock. I think all three songs have one thing in common, they are very different from their peers, which is one of the reasons I like them. They leap out of the radio and grab your interest ("I Will Wait" by Mumford & Sons is another example). Radio programmers are usually a conservative lot, so what I think is a strength they often view as a potential liability. I remember hearing "Video Killed The Radio Star" by the Buggles for the first time in 1979. It was completely different from what was on Top40 at the time, but I liked it. I found out many years later that it peaked at a very modest #40 on the HOT 100. Yet if you showed the average music lover the HOT 100 from that time period, "Video Killed The Radio Star" would be one of the few songs most people would recognize.

it's still amazing to me that people on Pulse (some of whom have 1000s of posts) still think that just because a song sells well on iTunes - that it is a conspiracy that radio does not play it. Were that the case, Top 40 would be awash with Glee, Country and Justin Bieber album tracks. These simply don't line up with their million dollar bottom line strategy plans.

Top 40 awash with country songs would not necessarily be a bad thing (well maybe a sprinkle instead of a wash). I would prefer Top 40 taking a risk playing The Band Perry or Jason Aldean then jumping on the latest Ke$sha song (which sounds almost exactly like the last 7 Ke$ha songs).

The fragmemtation of radio formats prevents that unfortunately

If Top 40 would just offer a LITTLE variety, then it would be fine. Why does it have to be all Hip-Hop/R&B or all Dance? Give us a little bit of what's popular everywhere, lord.

Not a huge difference, but the pop and EDM genres are not in the same cathegory. There's nothing common in "Troublemaker" and "Alive". Don't know what to do with the "dance-pop" term, must be something between EDM and pop. The best definition would be pop song with dance elements.

I guess Locked Out of Heaven fits Pop-Rock category? many people say it sounds like a The Police track.

Are you trying to say you'd put, say, Troublemaker and Don't You Worry Child in the same category? I agree. Alive, Sweet Nothing are different from the common dance-pop song. Is I Knew You Were Trouble.? a dance-pop song, I find it to be just "Pop" like 22 and Heart Attack.

Compared to 2002-04 (Hip-Hop/R&B), or 1980-81 (Adult Contemporary/Urban Cowboy), Top 40 is going through one of its' rare "golden" era moments in which it embraces a wider range of music. RIhanna, Ne-Yo, Macklemore & Ryan, Mumford & Sons, Maroon5 and Muse, all on the same station. Perhaps not as much as many of us would like, but certainly better than 10 years ago.

"golden" is a fun term
However, I don't think we are there yet. This may be a 'calm before the storm' so to speak
Many of the dance-divas that have dominated the last few years are between albums, which naturally makes room for other things like.....
The Harlem Shake ;)

Yeah, I don't get how people can complain that the chart lacks variety at this point in time.

What's the longest gap between weeks at number one for a song?

I complain about variety because sonically, most of the songs on Top 40 sound the same. Sure, there are ballads right now, but they're singles by Rihanna and Bruno Mars - not exactly coloring outside the lines here.
When I turn on Top 40, I'd like to hear a combination of artists and genres - they do not offer that today. Sirius' "The Blend" has me spoiled.

Bruno and Rihanna are helping ballads become more accepted, so later there might be piano ballads by lesser known artists.

Why does it take supremely overplayed artists to make ballads "accepted" at a format that used to play them at length?
And I'm crazy for complaining about variety?

What's the longest gap between weeks at number one for a song? I'm not sure about pre-SoundScan, probably the "The Twist"? it was No. 1 for one week in September 1960, and then for a couple more weeks in January 1962. in the SoundScan era, probably 4 weeks. "The Sign" was No. 1 for 4 weeks, then "Bump 'N Grind" was No. 1 for 4 straight weeks, and then "The Sign" returned for 2 more weeks on top.

Thanks! I was thinking that maybe 3 or 4 weeks.. The Twist is obviously hard to beat (and a unique case as well)

Locked out of Heaven is Reggae Rock and New Wave....but it's pretty much a pop song.

I think the last year the HOT 100 met your ideal was 1968 or 1969. I personally think 1966 was the best ever year for pop music in the so-called "rock" era (ie. post 1955). The Rolling Stones, Roger Williams ("Born Free"), Nancy Sinatra, Wilson Pickett, etc.. But that was before the consolidation of radio stations and record companies. I now listen to Internet radio, satellite rado or Rdio. I refuse to listen to commercial radio. I am getting old, cranky and allergic to commercials.
