My last weekly chart of the year was this past weekend, which means the next two weeks of charts are frozen weeks due to (a)lack of activity, (b)my lack of listening to currents in favour of xmas music, older music, yearend charts and doing other things in general, and (c)time to tabulate yearend charts. Since I use excel to keep track of my charts, the last one doesn't apply anymore so my yearend chart is already complete!

I haven't done a point-based yearend chart based on my weekly chart in ten years. I stopped doing them because I never liked the results and couldn't come up with a formula that I felt was an accurate depiction of what my yearend chart should look like. So instead, I started doing a rogue yearend Top 50 that was completely independent of my Top 100. This chart is what I consider to be my personal official yearend chart.

A few weeks ago, I finally came up with one that works well enough for me so I decided to go back and do one for each of the last ten years just to see how they would have looked. I also made one for this year just to reflect on the year's worth of charts. Before I post this year's Top 100, I'll post the Top 20 of each of the years of my chart from 1998 onward as a quick review, with 2005 onward being newly tabulated.

But first, here's my last Top 100 of 2015. This chart will also reflect my next two weeks. After that, I'm condensing it down to a Top 40.

Here's the first half of my Top 100 of 2015 based on my weekly charts for 2015. The points came from the 52 weeks from January through to the end of December 2015.

With each song is its yearend position, the number of weeks it spent inside the Top 100 for the 2015 calendar year only and its peak position in 2015. If it charted in 2014, its weeks weren't counted here. Only one song on this year's yearend chart also made it to last year's yearend as well. Songs with a * are still in the weekly Top 100 chart.


In 2015, 508 songs made my chart, the third most in any year. 228 of those made the Top 40, 82 made the Top 10 and 17 reached #1.

No, it's based on points. It's a combination of regular inverse points but predetermined bonus points assigned for weekly chart placements for songs at #1, #2, etc, plus songs that made the Top 40. I find inverse points favour longevity over position but I wanted to make sure songs that peaked high despite low chart runs received additional points to offset that. So this is result.

The last year or so has been mostly challenging when making my chart just because of how incredibly slow it was. There were times midway through when activity was back to normal and making my chart got exciting but then it dwindled down again soon after so a few months ago I decided to condense my chart down to a Top 40. It started as a Top 30 back in 1998 and by just over a year later, it had expanded to a Top 40 and then a Top 100. Save for a few months in 2005 when I got too busy to maintain it, it has always been a Top 100 because there has always been that many songs and more that I could say to some degree I liked enough to make a chart out of.

It's not really a big thing in the grand scheme of things since it takes maybe a bit more than an hour each week to make it, but since music is kind of a big thing in my life anyway, the change kind of is a big deal for me because I'm realizing how I listen to and digest music is changing. I attribute it a lot to aging. Last year I've noticed more than ever a lot of the big pop acts are artists I find to be completely bland and boring - a thought process many people have toward younger generations' music. I'm sure people 5-10 years older than me felt the same way when my favs were emerging and took over the pop world. Whether or not it's related, I haven't had the yearning to seek out new music by new artists as much - though last year certainly wasn't void of newcomers for me so maybe I don't have to yet.

At any rate, I expect 2016 to be more active musically with a lot of my favs, both in and out of the mainstream pop world, expected to put out new music this year. I doubt it'll cause me to expand my chart back to a Top 100 again though. I kind of like the idea of having it as a Top 40 because it further highlights the top of the chart without getting bogged down by the stuff at the bottom that, let's face it, were never really a big deal to me anyway. On one hand, having a Top 100 was good for record-keeping and remembering those certain songs that I'd otherwise forget existed until I look at my old charts and chart histories, but on the other hand, I'm coming to realize more and more that I should be focusing more on the things I like and that includes music. So here's to a new chart and happy new year!

• The first chart of 2016 is also the first week of the new Top 40 format, down from the Top 100 it was since 1999. The Max chart started out as a Top 30 in the spring of 1998 before expanding to a Top 40 before the end of the year and then a Top 100 nearly a year later. Changing times and changing listening habits on my part have resulted in the new change. The Weeks On column will represent total weeks each song spent on the chart, including those weeks as part of the Top 100 below #40 up until last week. As the chart evolves, the Weeks On column will naturally represent only those weeks within the Top 40 portion, since that’s all there will be to show anyway.

• Five songs enter the new Top 40 and four of those are from outside the Top 100. Blue October, Chris Stapleton and Cam are all new entries while Taylor Swift is a re-entry following the announcement and new video for 1989’s sixth single Out Of The Woods. The song previously made it as high as #13 as an album track upon the album’s initial release in 2014.

• David Bowie scores two entries in the Top 40 this week, after his album entered at the top of the album chart last week. With these two songs, it brings his total number of ShufflePlay charting songs to seven, all since 2013. His last album, The Next Day, yielded five singles, all of which made the Top 40. Where Are We Now (#40), The Stars (Are Out Tonight) (#7), Love Is Lost (#14), The Next Day (#34), and Valentine’s Day (#19). In its first week on, Blackstar is his highest charting song.

• Last week’s highest chart entry by Iris DeMent is a rather peculiar situation as the song is a recording from 1992 that hasn’t been re-released or even promoted as a current single. Instead, it’s a song used for the theme of The Departures, season 2. Why is it eligible for the chart? It’s new to me and it has present-day relevance. • Last week, Justin Bieber entered the chart at #39 with Love Yourself. The song became his fifth song to make the Top 40 and third from Purpose. Justin’s first appearance was back in 2009 when One Time reached #33. After that, he had a string of misses and near-reaches, with four songs that stopped just below the Top 40, One Less Lonely Girl (#51), Baby (#44), Somebody To Love (#44) and Boyfriend (#42). H earned his first Top 10 with Beauty And A Beat, featuring Nicki Minaj, which peaked at #7. That was it until What Do You Mean made it to #15 late last year and this week, Sorry reaches a new peak for Justin by moving 6-5.

• Taylor Swift earned the second Top 10 hit from her blockbuster 1989 album last week when Out Of The Woods moved to #9, besting its previous peak of #13 from October 2014. Previously, she reached #3 with Blank Space. The other singles from 1989 all made the Top 20: Shake It Off (#16), Style (#13), Bad Blood remix (#10) and Wildest Dreams (#14). Other than Woods and Space, Taylor has had two other Top 10 singles. You Belong With Me (#3) and I Knew You Were Trouble (#4).
