I love these rules.. They keep Carly Rae, for example, as a one-hit wonder for now, which seems fair, and exclude superstar artists who are considered one-hit wonders under less carefully-constructed guidelines, like Garth Brooks

Oh, and "uneducated on charts and fact"? Really? Because that's totally a measurable component of one's intelligence. When it comes to classifying one-hit wonders, it does matter. I choose to deal with facts, not people's opinions or spotty memories.

Doesn't that exclude her?

I'd say The Cardigans are definitely a one hit wonder. "Lovefool" was a huge radio hit (it never charted on the Hot 100 though due to lack of single release). The only other song they had that did anything was "My Favorite Game," which was only a moderate hit at Alternative.
Overseas the story is a bit different for them, but in the US they are a pretty solid one hit wonder.

not to forget more recent examples like Daniel Powter ("Bad Day") and Taylor Hicks ("Do I Make You Proud"). Daniel Powter never charted again? Really? Wasn't aware. his song free loop charted pretty much everywhere but the US and the UK

Note: Just because you have two hits on the Hot 100 does not mean you still won't be classified as a one hit wonder. The measure of that is how many of said hits are remembered after an extended period of time has passed. See: Leona Lewis. For your info leona had 4 usa hot 100 hits. Bleeding love peaked at number one, better in time peaked at number 11, I will be peaked at number 66, and happy peaked at number 32.So I would classify leona as a 4 hit wonder, not a one hit wonder. She also had a number one dance hit with collide. while nothing is set in stone, it is common for people to view the top 40 of the hot 100 as songs that were hits. i really dont think many people at all know i will be

I'm sure "Good Time" was a top 10 hit, I don't remember its peak tho.
Carly isn't a 1 hit wonder since it's a duet like Usher & Alicia Keys or Jay-Z & Alicia Keys, it's Owl City & Carly Rae Jepsen and well IMO features should count lol
Gotye, James Blunt and Daniel Powter are definitely 1 hit wonders in the US so far.

I think it's interesting that despite Psy obliterating Youtube records, it only got 8,6 million views in 2 days, while Harlem Shake was getting 30 million every 2 days, for its first two weeks. It puts into perspective how big it was.

These one-hit wonder arguments are so ridiculous. It's completely subjective.

It puts into perspective how big it was. Eh, when you take the fact that Gentleman requires 4 minutes of dedication while Harlem Shake required 30 seconds of dedication, you end up with 100/8 = 12.5 million views for Harlem Shake's biggest week. That makes Gentleman even more impressive. In just 2 days it was getting 2/3rds the time-dedication from youtube views of Harlem Shake's largest week.

Week Ending April 14, 2013. Songs: PSY Gallops Back K-Pop star PSY has the week’s top new entry on the Hot 100 as “Gentleman” debuts at #12. That’s much higher than PSY’s breakthrough smash, “Gangnam Style,” which debuted at #64 in September. (The phenomenal hit shot to #11 in its second week and reached #2 in its third week.) Of course, YouTube streaming data wasn’t a factor in the Hot 100 back then, as it is now. The fact that such a massive hit as “Gangham Style” wasn’t able to make #1 (it logged seven weeks at #2) was no doubt a key reason that Billboard realized they needed to adjust their Hot 100 methodology. “Gangnam Style” was the first video ever to reach 1 billion YouTube views worldwide. It’s now up to 1.5 billion. “Gentleman” set a You Tube record by notching 18.9 million views in its first 24 hours on the site. It’s now up to 125 million. (Note: the Hot 100 takes only U.S. activity into account.) Incidentally, this is the first song titled “Gentleman” to hit the Hot 100. By contrast, eight different songs titled “Lady” have charted, including four that have made the top 10—by Kenny Rogers (#1 in 1980), Styx (#6 in 1975), Little River Band (#10 in 1979) and D’Angelo (#10 in 1996). P!nk lands her fourth #1 hit as “Just Give Me A Reason” (featuring Nate Ruess) moves up from #3 last week. P!nk had just one #1 hit (the all-star “Lady Marmalade”) in her first eight years of recording, but has piled up three more in the past five years: “So What,” “Raise Your Glass” and now “Just Give Me A Reason.” This is the second #1 for Ruess, following fun.’s “We Are Young.” “Just Give Me A Reason” has been the nation’s top digital seller for three of the last four weeks. That’s the longest run at #1 on the digital chart for a female-led collabo since “We Found Love” by Rihanna featuring Calvin Harris had five weeks on top in late 2011. “Thrift Shop” by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis featuring Wanz holds at #2 on the Hot 100 for the second week. In addition, the song tops Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs for the 14th week. That’s the longest run at #1 by a white artist since the chart originated (as Harlem Hit Parade) in October 1942. (Mariah Carey, whose “We Belong Together” logged 14 weeks at #1 on the R&B chart in 2005, is biracial. Her father was of African American and Venezuelan descent. Her mother is of white Irish descent.) Macklemore & Ryan Lewis have a second song in the top five on the Hot 100: “Can’t Hold Us” (featuring Ray Dalton) jumps from #7 to #5. Billboard’s Gary Trust notes that this marks the first time that a group or duo has had two songs in the top five simultaneously since the Black Eyed Peas doubled up for five weeks in June and July 2009 with “Boom Boom Pow” and “I Gotta Feeling.” As of this week, Justin Timberlake has amassed twice as many top 10 hits since going out on his own than he had with *NSYNC, the boy band in which he rode to fame. “Mirrors” jumps from #12 to #7 on the Hot 100, becoming his 14th top 10 hit. With *NSYNC, he had seven top 10 hits from 1999 to 2002. Like most pop and hip-hop stars, Timberlake has released a lot of collabos. “Mirrors” is his fifth top 10 hit that is strictly a solo endeavor. It follows “Cry Me A River,” “Rock Your Body,” “What Goes Around…Comes Around” and “Summer Love.” Timberlake has a second song in this week’s top 10. “Suit & Tie,” his smash collabo with Jay-Z, dips from #5 to #6. “Feel This Moment” by Pitbull featuring Christina Aguilera jumps from #10 to #8, which matches its peak to date. The song also jumps to #1 on Dance/Electronic Songs, displacing Baauer’s “Harlem Shake.” Demi Lovato’s “Heart Attack” jumps from #15 to #10. It’s the second song with this title to crack the top 10. An Olivia Newton-John song with the same title hit #3 in November 1982. This is Lovato’s third top 10 hit. “This Is Me,” a collabo with Joe Jonas from Camp Rock, hit #9 in July 2008. “Skyscraper” hit #10 in July 2011. “Heart Attack” is from Lovato’s fourth album, DEMI, which is due May 14. Here's the low-down on this week's top 10 songs. The Top Five: “Just Give Me A Reason” by P!nk featuring Nate Ruess jumps from #3 to #1 in its ninth week on the chart. This is its fifth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #1 (283K)…“Thrift Shop” by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis featuring Wanz holds at #2 for the second week in its 28th week on the chart. This is its 17th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #5 (167K)…Bruno Mars’ “When I Was Your Man” drops from #1 to #3 in its 17th week on the chart. This is its 10th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #6 (166)…“Stay” by Rihanna featuring Mikky Ekko holds at #4 for the second week in its 10th week on the chart. The song has climbed as high as #3. This is its ninth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #4 (176K)…“Can’t Hold Us” by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis feat. Ray Dalton jumps from #7 to #5 in its 10th week. This is its second week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #2 (208K). The Second Five: “Suit & Tie” by Justin Timberlake featuring Jay-Z dips from #5 to #6 in its 14th week on the chart. This is its 11th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #14 (105K)…Justin Timberlake’s “Mirrors” jumps from #12 to #7 in its ninth week on the chart. It’s Timberlake’s 14th top 10 hit since leaving *NSYNC…“Feel This Moment” by Pitbull featuring Christina Aguilera rebounds from #10 to #8 in its 12th week on the chart. This is its fourth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #16 (97K)…Drake’s “Started From The Bottom” holds at #9 for the second week in its 10th week on the chart. This is its ninth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #21 (80K)…Demi Lovato’s “Heart Attack” jumps from #15 to #10 in its seventh week on the chart. This is her third top 10 hit. Digital sales rank: #13 (110K). Two songs drop out of the top 10 this week. Baauer’s “Harlem Shake” drops from #6 to #13, ending an eight-week run in the top 10. Florida Georgia Line’s “Cruise” drops from #8 to #11. The latter song holds at #3 on Hot Digital Songs (179K). What’s more, it sets a sales record. Read on. Florida Georgia Line’s “Cruise” this week surpasses Sugarland’s “Stuck Like Glue” to become the best-selling song by a country duo in digital history. “Cruise” has sold 2,726,000 copies. “Stuck Like Glue” has sold 2,621,000. Sugarland fans will be glad to know that the pair has five of the 10 best-selling songs by a country duo in digital history. Here’s how #3 through #10 stack up: Big & Rich’s “Save A Horse (Ride A Cowboy)” (2,087,000), Thompson Square’s “Are You Gonna Kiss Me Or Not” (2,019,000), Sugarland’s “Stay” (1,960,000), Sugarland’s “All I Want To Do” (1,367,000), The Wreckers’ “Leave The Pieces” (1,034,000), Big & Rich’s “Lost In This Moment” (990K), Sugarland’s “Want To” (856K) and Sugarland’s “Baby Girl” (827K). (Note: I’m counting only ongoing duos, not one-off collabos.) “Cruise” holds at #1 on Hot Country Songs for the seventh week. That’s the longest run at #1 by an ongoing duo since “Don’t Let Me Cross Over” by the husband-and-wife duo Carl Butler and Pearl topped the chart for 11 weeks in 1962-1963. (I’m glad Florida Georgia line chose Nelly for the pop crossover remix of “Cruise”. It would have looked a shade too clever if the billing was Florida Georgia Line featuring Flo Rida.) Imagine Dragons’ “Radioactive” drops from #11 to #14 in its 33rd week. Digital sales rank: #9 (124K)…“I Love It” by Icona Pop featuring Charli XCX jumps from #17 to #16 in its 11th week. Digital sales rank: #10 (116K). Luke Bryan’s “Crash My Party” is the week’s second highest new entry at #18. Digital sales rank: #7 (164K). This is Bryan’s second top 20 hit. “Drunk On You” reached #16 in 2010. Bryan, 36, was a surprise (and surprised!) winner of Entertainer of the Year at the recent Academy of Country Music Awards. Miranda Lambert and her husband Blake Shelton both have songs in the top 40 this week. They also teamed for a third. Lambert lands her first top 20 hit as “Mama’s Broken Heart” jumps from #35 to #20 in its 12th week. “The House That Built Me” peaked at #28 in June 2010. Shelton’s “Sure Be Cool If You Did” drops from #29 to #36 in its 14th week. The song tops 1 million in digital sales this week. It’s his fourth million-seller. And Shelton’s follow-up, “Boys ’Round Here” jumps from #55 to #40 in its third week. The song features Pistol Annies, a trio which includes Lambert). Darius Rucker’s “Wagon Wheel” jumps from #24 to #21 in its 10th week. It’s Rucker’s highest-charting solo hit to date. If it climbs one more notch, it will be his first top 20 hit since his days with Hootie & the Blowfish…“Highway Don’t Care” by Tim McGraw with Taylor Swift jumps from #42 to #25 in its seventh week…“Power Trip” by J. Cole featuring Miguel jumps from #43 to #26 in its ninth week—a strong showing for a non-country hit in the wake of the ACM Awards…Lady Antebellum’s “Downtown” jumps from #36 to #29 in its 10th week. Hunter Hayes’ “I Want Crazy” debuts at #43. It’s from an expanded “Encore” edition of his hit album, Hunter Hayes… Selena Gomez’s “Come & Get It” debuts at #45. It’s from Gomez’s upcoming debut solo album, which is due this summer. (No fronting The Scene on this one.)… “I Hit It First” by Ray J featuring Bobby Brackins debuts at #51…Avril Lavigne’s “Here’s To Never Growing Up” debuts at #52. It’s the first single from her upcoming fifth studio album. Kendrick Lamar’s “Bitch, Don’t Kill My Vibe” jumps from #75 to #65 in its eighth week. (Such a sweet title.)…“High School” by Nicki Minaj featuring Lil Wayne jumps from #83 to #68 in its second week. “Accidental Racist” by Brad Paisley featuring LL Cool J debuts at #77. It’s from Wheelhouse, which enters The Billboard 200 at #2 this week. The song has stirred considerable buzz and controversy. (The consensus is that it was a well-intentioned, but clumsy, attempt to start a conversation about race.) It’s not easy to write a great song about race. Paul McCartney’s “Ebony & Ivory,” a 1982 collabo with Stevie Wonder, was criticized for being too candy-coated. (Saturday Night Live parodied both of these songs.) For my money, the best song that touches on race is Sly & the Family Stone’s “Everyday People,” which was released at the end of 1968. Paramore’s “Still Into You” debuts at #83. It’s from the group’s fourth album, Paramore, which enters The Billboard 200 at #1 this week…“Don’t Rush” by Kelly Clarkson featuring Vince Gill re-enters the chart at #87, which constitutes a new high for the record…We The Kings’ “Just Keep Breathing debuts at #92…Scotty McCreery’s “See You Tonight” debuts at #94. “Ready” by Fabolous featuring Chris Brown debuts at #97. It’s from Fabolous' sixth studio album, Loso’s Way 2: Rise To Power, which is due June 18…“U.O.E.N.O.” by Rocko featuring Future & Rick Ross debuts at #99. “DJ Got Us Fallin’ In Love” by Usher featuring Pitbull tops the 4 million mark in digital sales this week. It’s the second 4 million-seller for both artists. Usher’s “OMG” (featuring will.i.am) has sold 4,708,000. Pitbull’s “Give Me Everything” (featuring Ne-Yo, AfroJack and Nayer) has sold 4,681,000. “DJ…” reached #4 in October 2010. Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ On A Prayer” tops the 3 million mark in digital sales this week. The single topped the Hot 100 for four weeks in February and March 1987. It’s the fourth song from the 1980s to sell 3 million or more digital copies. It follows Journey’s 1981 hit “Don’t Stop Believin’” (5,658,000), Survivor’s 1982 movie hit “Eye Of The Tiger” (3,492,000) and Michael Jackson’s 1984 smash “Thriller” (3,304,000). “Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead” by The Wizard Of Oz film cast enters the U.K. chart at #2 this week, the result of a nearly successful Facebook campaign to make the song #1 in the week that former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher died. (Whatever you think of Thatcher’s policies, I thought this campaign was unseemly. Let’s hope such a hard-hearted practice never catches on in the U.S.) music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart-watch/week-ending-april-14-2013-songs-psy-gallops-221740402.html#more-4785

Thanks for the one-hit-wonder article link, ListenToIt. The country chart is an example of mass popularity outside of the Hot 100- obviously, Garth Brooks wouldn't be a OHW. So, looking to albums success is sensible in that regard.
I do think the top 40 designation is a good one, though, in general, for determining the status.
And, thanks for posting the Hot 100 here, 2m.

Screaming at Billboard classifying "Pour It Up" as R&B but not "Mirrors."
