People keep mentioning that the first two days of airplay and the CC deal on Monday were all "wasted," but I don't think that's the case. That initial explosion of airplay could have helped to fuel sales, which could then fuel airplay. The CC deal gives the song a lot of instant exposure. If it works, people like the song and go out and buy it. If it doesn't work, the song doesn't go much further.
More specifically, radio may have been very slow to play this Mariah song due to her age, recent underperforming singles, etc. However, it may be a song that people would like and will go out and buy and will enjoy listening to on the radio. The CC deal gives the song more of a chance to get the exposure necessary to prove itself as an actual potential hit, when all the odds may be stacked against that artist due to reasons other than the song itself.

^Also, the Clear Channel deal is not just for the numbers...its also great for instant exposure. And it has done its job.
EDIT: Jazzy and I posted at the same time, lol.

I think we're so conditioned to labels using CC to maximize a song's chart debut that we've kind of forgotten what the purpose of them should really be (which is what Jazzy and l!nk!n just said, that it is great for exposure). A high chart peak doesn't mean much if the song ends up falling off the face of the earth right after...I've seen more than person claim that #Beautiful is "falling like a rock" now that the CC deal is over, they are hoping and praying it's a fluke, lol. But that CC deal exposed a lot of people at once to a song they might not have heard otherwise, so whatever the song does in the long run is likely more than it would have done without the deal.
Jennifer will get a full week with the first day AI included, but she sacrifices a full week of sales, and (correct me if I'm wrong) her video is not coming out this week. Mariah will have the video streaming points as well as a full week of sales to 'make up' for the eight day effect.

Do we know if the Streaming week matches up with the Billboard sales or airplay week? (Or neither?)

^I believe the streaming info is Monday-Sunday? The charts ranked by audience goes Wed.-Tues. because Billboard is able to get that info up to the minute, whereas sales and streaming (I think) info takes more time to compile. I agree that it's good exposure, in general, especially since it could have fueled some sales. I was just speaking in relation to there being no sales to go along with those numbers. Awkward- there is no "eight-day" effect for BDS. The way to look at is is that it builds airplay daily- so, say for this Wednesday-Tuesday period, it had daily audience totals of 2.5m, 3m, 3m, 3m, 3m, 2.5m, 2m- that would be 20 million (resulting in a drop on Hot 100 Airplay from 44 to the lower 50s, I'd think).

There's a chance Mariah will have two top twentys this year . Beautiful and all I want for Christmas is you ;) this could be her first year with two top 20s in a long time . Last year Christmas got to 21 but with the streaming points it might get higher this year

It's gramatically correct. They are technically a magazine company. Mediabase should be italicized as well. I don't do it all the time. Just when I remember or feel like it. Similar to quotation marks around song titles and italicizing album titles. Aren't you talking about the company, not a specific magazine though? josh is right... Billboard, the magazine, is italicized, but Billboard, the company, is not. Mediabase should not be italicized, either.

There's a chance Mariah will have two top twentys this year . Beautiful and all I want for Christmas is you ;) this could be her first year with two top 20s in a long time . Last year Christmas got to 21 but with the streaming points it might get higher this year Streaming was available last year, just not YouTube streams. Over on YouTube, "All I Want for Christmas Is You" only has 53 million views worldwide for the version on VEVO and another 34 million from another version. There's other videos, but they won't amount to a huge amount. With it only that much and being available for 3+ years, I don't think the added YouTube streams will be enough to push it into the top 20 this year. Now, I stress "this" because this year, the tracking period for Christmas will hurt the points for Christmas songs on the Hot 100. Digital sales for songs usually spike in the 22-24. Well, the 22nd is the end of one tracking period, and the 23rd and 24th are on another period. Same goes for airplay. Christmas songs peak in airplay on the 24th and 25th and the week lead up to it sees large amounts as well. (Streaming will have the same dates.) This year, airplay tracking will run from the 18th to 24th and 25th to 31st. Its biggest day will be separated from the rest of the biggest week. Most Christmas songs will all have this problematic run where they fluctuate between their biggest annual peaks every time Christmas is on a Sunday to maximize streaming and sales. They'll also see nice peaks when Christmas lands on Mondays or Tuesdays as airplay will be maximized and sales and streaming will only be cut off a little. However, Christmas is on a Wednesday this year. Pretty much, Christmas songs will run on an almost sine or cosine-like graph. Sundays will see the largest peaks, Mondays a bit lower, Tuesdays a bit lower, Wednesdays a bit lower, Thursdays a bit lower, Fridays a bit higher, Saturdays a bit higher, and then back to Sunday.

This thread just like in her real life is all about Mariah, love it. Feels like the good old days to see how she is coming out of the gates, a top 20 debut would be perfect. This is a beautiful and understated song so I'm hoping that leads to more and more people loving it after they have heard it a few times.

You're now actually counting her top 20 hits for this year? Before she has got any? In May? Wow Mariah really has an effect on Pulse

Another strong day- around a 5m Mediabase gain (which is probably 2.5m-3m in BDS numbers). We have to wait until after the first week or two, though, to gauge things more clearly. But it's certainly an encouraging start.
RE AIWFCIY- I think it was jeng who noted that in terms of airplay, it was the perfect scenario last season- Christmas fell on a Tuesday, so it was the last week of the airplay tracking week. This year, it's on a Wednesday, so that last big day of airplay won't impact the Hot 100 this coming season.

If you look at the statistics bar of the video though, there is a dramatic increase in the amount of views every Christmas. It jumps 5 million+ views in a short amount of time, so I think streaming could help it out regarding youtube views. :) Edit: And that's just the main vevo video. Not counting other versions (including the one with 30mil+ views).

Last year Christmas got to 21 but with the streaming points it might get higher this year Her sales may be lower also...so who knows. Oh yeah, that's another thing. Every year, more people already will have downloaded AIWFCIY, so every year there's less people who will likely download it. Didn't it get into like the top five in one of the first years of the digital age? Now it only manages to reach the top 20 digitally. (Did it scrape the top ten this year? I can't recall.) Anyway, I have a feeling she's going to have multiple top 20 hits this year. I just feel like this era is going to be more successful than the last two. "Almost Home" (which isn't from this album, but still new enough) and "#Beautiful" are arguably much stronger than most of the material from the last two albums, and if that's any indication of what's to come from this era, then things are definitely looking up.

The daily gains for Mimi/Miguel are very nice; hard to tell what the numbers will be in terms of BDS. There was a 3m or so difference in the first-day numbers, and then around 5-6m for the first two days combined. If it gains at its current amounts, that could result in a BDS sum not far off of the 31m it debuted with for the first two days.
