They shouldn't be spending a ton of money promoting a GH album. It defeats the purpose. GH albums should be gravy, allowing you to profit off of tracks you already bought and paid for. Spending a ton of money would be pointless. Thats a good point. But, and no offense to the others, but Shania makes all of Mercury's money. Nobody can argue that. So, wouldn't you agree that they should milk this album? I mean, this is Shania's second album in 2 years, a rare occurence. They could show mega profit if this album takes off.

No because they aren't looking at this as a typical album with a 1-year shelf life. This album will still be selling 10 years down the road. There's no need to treat it like a sprint and blow a ton of promo trying to pull in a big first couple of weeks. Come On Over has proven that her albums sell well as they age. This album will sell even better.

And anyway, Shania isn't around to cater to Nashville's needs, she's in another continent.

UP! already run its course, and Shania won't release a new album till 2006 (perhaps). They do need the money.

They do need the money. Very true. In fact, I think Shania now brings in more than 70% of Mercury's money. Look at their entire roster of artists. Besides Shania, they only artists they have are: Terri Clark, Julie Roberts, Hank Williams, Billy Currington, Steve Azar, Sugarland, James Otto, and Tom T. Hall. That's it. When you look at that list, the only one pulling in any kind of profit is Shania and maybe Hank Williams with his occasional 'Best Of' collections that don't cost as much to release. Other than that, you've got two artists with a lot of promotion and singles push [Terri and Julie] whose albums haven't even shipped Gold yet. The funny part is that the money that Shania has brought in probably paid for Terri's # 1 song but Mercury has yet to spring for an official press release about "Come On Over" going Double Diamond. The same thing happened with "Up!." There was no coverage for "Up!" when it had the highest selling debut ever for a Female Country artist. No press release when she got all of those Billboard awards. Nothing. Artists, country artists especially, who have done less have at least gotten an ad in "Billboard" magazine. Shania is still pulling in the money but, since the "Come On Over" era started to end, the money is definitely going to other artists. Shania is Mercury's # 1 seller, but she's barely in the top 3 on their promotion list.

You're overestimating how much they spend on Julie Roberts and Terri Clark, both of their recent albums have been profitable.

Terri's GH profitable? I highly doubt it. It sold 50k in its first week and tanked. I haven't seen it on a chart inages! And they made videos, bought spins, etc. No, that album cannot be profitable. Maybe Shania fans do overestimate it, but it should be the more you bring, the more we spend on you. The money stays with its source. That doesn't happen at Mercury..

Calm down. GH's don't require production budgets. The tracks are already paid for. Mercury didn't have to pay to have an album made. The only thing they paid for was a video and promo. The albums are profitable. Bet on it.

Did you notice how fast they got Terri working on an album though? I mean, you can't argue a Shania "Hits" is going to make more than a Terri "Hits" but Mercury obviously isn't rushing Shania to make an album. I just think they could invest more into the album and singles. And your right TCorey, it defeats the purpose. But they also need to spend more on media, ie. press releases and certifications. TWIM and UP need to be recertified and the GH should be certified soon, it was shipped double-platinum and has sold gold, almost platinum...

It's just something they have to pay for. It's nice as a symbol of accomplishment, but it's not a major focus for them. It only matters to hardcore fans who want to see Shania rewarded. And who's to say Terri didn't want to start working on a new album immediately. I don't think Mercury could force Shania to do anything at this point and it's pretty well known that she likes to take time off between albums. Terri isn't making as much money as Shania, so financially it makes sense for her to keep on working.

They have no one to pick up the slack. And yes, they can't force her.

Clark's last three albums weren't certified...maybe Mercury could not find the money for it? LoL.
Which makes one wonder, where all the money goes, if afterall Clark's, Robert's and perhaps Currington's album too was profitable, and still around 65-70% of their profits come from Shania's sales....(which should mean after paying her too)

If Clark's albums weren't profitiable she would have been dropped. She hasn't been. Period. But what is profitable? Compared to who? That's the point. When Shania is bringing in double, triple, quadruple the amount of money that Terri is, more should be spent to promote her and her albums, singles, tours, videos, etc.

Not losing money. As far as I can tell more money is being spent on Shania. Are you trying to say Terri and Shania have the same public profile? Hardly. I just think because you guys are hardcore fans, you're never going to think Mercury does enough for her.

It just aggravates me when Mercury does something for someone and not for Shania. It wouldn't even have to be Shania. But they screw up the big stuff. This is the wrong thread for this discussion tho, it should be in the Double Diamond thread... I'm done I guess...

I accepted when you said her GH was profitable, but I find it interesting that you say Mercury shouldn't care about certifications, since every other label does. Like Sony, all of them, even MCA just rewarded around the CMA's George Strait, and MCA today under the same label as Mercury, under Nashville Universal. And it's fact that none of her last three releases were certified - the reasons maybe with Mercury... Probably we will actually see, where things will go, as this upcoming album of Clark is her 7th at Mercury...if she did not renewed her contrat with Mercury earlier, there might be not much albums left, or none at her contract.

yes, this is about the song party for 2, not about album sales, promotions etc....let's give this thread a rest and go back to talking about chart positions for THIS song on here only.

do you or do you not agree...this topic has been averaging like 1 post /min this morning, and it's way off topic? I'm merely suggesting that everyone argue about mercury somewhere else on a more appropriate thread. You were rude. It's holiday season, as you said, you could keep this remark to yourself.

Why should labels care about certifications? They're nice but they don't put money in the bank. What do they gain by certifying an album other than something to hang on the wall? I think it's because of the buzz around an album or/and artist. Otherwise why all the labels does it? If no one cared, albums never would be certified. It's just the same counting and measuring as #1s. Why Artists receives plaques for #1s?
