do you or do you not agree...this topic has been averaging like 1 post /min this morning, and it's way off topic? I'm merely suggesting that everyone argue about mercury somewhere else on a more appropriate thread. Yea, TCorey, can you move all the posts to the certification thread? lol..too bad we didn't think of that before hand...oh well..Happy Holidays!

Anybody ever notice that when Nashville favorites approach a song, the song in front slows down? Almost like radio slows the song to let the favorite pass.. Yeah. Right now, radio is slowing Shania & Billy's "Party For Two" song just enough to let Gretchen and Alan pass. What a shock. They pulled the same crap a couple of weeks ago when they slowed "Party For Two" down to let Tim get his obligated Top 5/# 1 song. There are certain artists that are guaranteed a Top 5 or # 1 finish. No matter what the song is or how good/bad it is. Rascal Flatts are the favorite Group out there now. They're assured of a Top 10 no matter what right now. They're still not in the elite group of "automatic Top 5/#1" yet but they're getting there. Tim, Kenny C., Alan, and now Gretchen are the favorites at radio right now. Everything they release will go a minimum of Top 10. Top 10 is assured. Top 5 is almost assured in most cases as well. # 1 is optional, depending on what favorite(s) is/are ahead of the artist in question. Once the latest round of favorites passes, hopefully "Party For Two" will be allowed to get into the Top 5. I highly doubt it because it is a "Shania Twain" song but I can hope.

Great news for Party For Two, entering the UK singles chart at #10. This means it is her 9th top 10 single there!
You're Still the One - #10 From This Moment On - #9 That Don't Impress Me Much - #3 Man! I Feel Like A Woman - #3 Don't Be Stupid (You Know I Love You) - #5 I'm Gonna Getcha Good - #4 Ka-Ching - #8 Forever And For Always - #6 Party For Two - #10
#10 is really a great effort, considering she really didn't do that much promotion, and the singles chart is extremely competitive and heavy with big name artists who do a lot more promotion there. Considering this, even top 15 would have been pretty respectable, so to get another top 10 is excellent news

The remark tha 'Party For Two' was slowed down to 'get Tim his obligated #1' is VERY asinine, for SEVERAL reasons!!!
For starters, he's had SEVENTEEN #!s since 1997, starting with 'It's Your Love', easily tops at the format during that time period.
That staggering 'Everywhere' CD produced FIVE #1 tunes and another which peaked at #2, an unprecedented accomplushment.
Tim has released twenty-one singles since 'IYL', ALL have gone top ten at R&R, and only one (Some Things Never Change) missed the top 5.
His weekly spin numbers for 'Live Like You Were Dying' in early August were flat out staggering; the only reason the song barely cracked the year-end top ten instead of winding upm in the top five or even number one for the year (it finished at #9) was because it didn't come out last winter; 'Redneck Woman' didn't make 2004's top ten for the same reason.
Mr. Twain & Ms. Hill have both been left behind by the format's dramatic swing back to it's more traditional based roots, and with 'When I Think About Cheating' headed for the top five, that's beyond debate.
Radio is certainly NOT slowing Ms. Twain's single down to let Alan & Gretchen pass; Mr. Jackson is among the top 5 artists at the format these days, and 'Redneck Woman' REALLY awakened Nashville's label honchos and songwriters alike to the fact that the format has indeed obliterated it's pop-country flirtation, with terrific results.
Country radio is HOT, country music sales will rise about TWENTY percent this year (the industry as a whole will be VERY lucky to eke out a 5-6% rise in what has been ANOTHER dreadful year for music retailers), and 2005 figurs to be another banner year for the format.
With new studio CDs from George Strait & Kenny Chesney leading the way, it certainly should be.

Nice try, but you alway seem to overlook the fact, that nor Mr Chesney, neither Mr Mcgraw are traditionalist country artists. But of course male artists have always different measures in country business. Frankly there is no connection between Mcgraw's #1s and any trend in country music..
And just as sales aren't everything neither radio chart positions.... Ms Twain, as you call her, had and has a very nice carrier without having too much #1s on country radio.
Or could I mention Alison Krauss - when she had a #1 on country radio?

Gretchen got on at the right time. She doesn't even know what traditional country is. Its been dead for over 30 years.
And it does happen. Not just with Shania, but Reba, SheDAISY, LeAnn..all these songs had bullets and increased plays. When the "favorite" showed up, they die.
Gretchen's going to be sorry. Faith was the "favorite" and now look at her.
Just wait until Shania releases "I Ain't No Quitter". Then Gretchen will really know what traditional country is..

You cannot say that country is supporting traditional music because they arent. Anyway, Gretchen can be country, when she wants to be (ever listen to "Chariot"?)

Thats a lie. Julie's brought in more than Terri. But come on! Terri's GH profitable? I highly doubt it. It sold 50k in its first week and tanked. I haven't seen it on a chart inages! And they made videos, bought spins, etc. No, that album cannot be profitable. Just did some SoundScan research and Terri's GH album has actually sold more than her last 2 studio albums already. Profitable for sure.

To say that country radio does not support traditional country music is STUPID, since George Strait and Alan Jackson are the two BEST practitioners of traditional country music out there, and you can certainly add Randy Travis to that stellar list.
Since I've NEVER stated that either McGraw or Chesney is a traditional country artist, and neither is Ms. Twain or Ms. Hill, for that matter, you're not making any sense.
The fact remains that when it was announced while 'Redneck Woman' was streaking to #1, it was revealed that 'Here For The Party' and 'When I Think About Cheating' would be the next two singles from her smash CD.
'When I Think About Cheating' is, as many in the industry have opined, as traditional-based country as anything Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn and/or Tammy Wynette EVER recorded, and you cannot get any more traditional than those three legends.
Gretchen Wilson is the BEST thing to happen to country radio in SEVERAL years; the diversity of her first three singles is VERY much needed at the format, and the format's sharp return towards it's traditional roots since September 11th, 2001 cannot be denied.
Her music has ATTITUDE to burn, her songs are easily unlike ANYTHING else on the radio, and her unprecedented chart and sales achievements in 2004 can only help to provide a HUGE boost to the format and country music fans everywhere.
Country music fans are the most passionate fans out there, and when music with as much passion as Ms. Wilson's first three singles or 'Live Like You Were Dying' hits their radio, they are bound to respond by inundating their local contry station's request lines and/or websites, and their local music retailer as well.
Judging by the strong sales year 2004 has been for country music, and the format's unchalleneged status as the most-listened to format out there, the format is on the verge of exploding AGAIN as it did in 1990 thanks to Clint Black, Garth Brooks, and Lorrie Morgan, 1989's top three new singles artists.
Country radio had NEVER heard anything like Mr. Brooks before he hit the format broadside the way Ms. Wilson did earlier this year, and the same can certainly be said for Ms. Wilson. That's GREAT for country radio, and there's no doubt about it!!!

Marv, you're giving Ms. Wilson too much credit. There's nothing she's doing that the Dixie Chicks weren't five years ago.

Yea and the format had never seen anything like Shania Twain when she broke in 1995 and they still can't get over her. Off topic, but in 10 years, come back and let's see if Gretchen has 4 Diamonds, 7 #1s, 16 Top 10s, and 22 Top 20s. I am a fan of Wilson's, but I would wait until after her sophomore project to say she has made it. Country radio and Nashville can be very cruel to artists...

um, have we forgotten about garth? He exploded on the scene faster than shania did....remember, her debut album never really charted, had 3 singles peak no higher than 50 or so....Garth started out with a top 10, then several #1s, several albums in the top 10 at the same time, most of which are among the best selling country albums of all time. I would speculate Garth as THE artist of the early 90s, Shania as the artist of the 2nd half of the 90s, the Chicks as the artists of the late 90s/early 2000s...and I hate to say it, but probably Toby as the current hottest artist....and before you comment on this...look at total #1s, #1s in last couple years, #1 albums on both country and BB 200.
Now, before you comment again that Shania has sold 19 million for COO, remember that albums sales were somewhat stagnant back in the 90s when Garth "only" sold 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 million per album. Also, Garth did not have shania's policy of putting out 1 album every 2-3 years. He was putting approximately 1/year until about 1997. I'd still rank him as the #1 album artist. I'd still say there are TONS of artists ahead of Shania in the singles dept since her debut in the mid 90s. Among those with more #1s....Toby, Tim, George, Kenny Chesney, and more to be named in the future.
So until Shania gets another country #1 single, I still would say she is NOT the #1 country artist at the moment.

So until Shania gets another country #1 single, I still would say she is NOT the #1 country artist at the moment. You're right. Garth still has sold 30 million more records than Shania worldwide. So, that does make him the #1 country (only) albums artist(techinically, Elvis is in front of him, but he doesn't count for solid country). And radio, as I posted before, can be manipulated. The best way to see who is truly #1 is by albums. And, no matter who says what, every person is going to have a different #1 artist. One more comment, Shania (and Garth, I really don't know his numbers) that you don't need #1's to be successful. You do need hit songs to get your name out, but every single you chuck out doesn't have to go #1 for you to be a multi-platinum, solid selling artist.

The primary reason that Garth put out CDs MUCH faster than anybody has over the past six or seven years is because the charts were MUCH faster then; Garth released THREE CDs in less than five years at the start of the nineties; Tim McGraw has released three CDs within the past six years, or roughly a new studio CD every two years.
The problem with those faster charts of the early nineties is that FAR fewer artists became staples at the format because, as several consultants have pointed out in various issues of R&R over the past 24 months, radio was rushing singles up and down the charts too fast to give their listeners a chance to become familiar with the artists and their music.
The fact that the number of artists who were introduced to the format between 1989 & 1994 who are STILL huge at the format is relatively small shows you why.
Faster charts=more CD sales is a no-brainer, but the fact that the charts have gotten MUCH slower since 1998-99 has led to fewer CD sales; lots of folks will not buy a CD until they've heard the second or third single, and that's bad for everybody---retail, marketing, radio and everybody else.
The fact that R&R & BB both slashed their panels fourteen months at the request of the Nashville label honchos, has been a very good thing; the charts are somewhat faster, and the stations which remain on the panels which R&R & BB use do play MUCH more current music than many of the stations which were dropped from those panels.
Shania was good for the format, and so was Faith Hill, and there has been SOME whining about the fact that their recent struggles at the format was caused by the fact that have both enjoyed MUCH more success at AC the past 3-5 years than they did at country, which resulted in the format 'turning their backs on both of them' , is asinine and wrong.
Just ask Lonestar, who've had SIX #1s this decade according to Blair Garner of 'After Midnite'; the fact that 'Amazed' was a smash at AC hasn't hurt them a bit.
I also don't expect either Keith Urban or Martina McBride to suffer PERIOD as a result of their current successes at AC radio.
Neither should anybody else!!!
Insofar as Ms. Wilson is concerned, her startling successes are GREAT for the format, and there's no debating that.
Sorry TCorey, but while the Dixie Chicks were great for the format as well, none of Ms. Wilson's first three singles sounds like anything they did, as far as I can recall.
Both artists did a splendid job of blending various aspects of country music, and the results have been terrific, and great for the format, retailers, Nashville songwriters, Nashville marketing reps, and country radio as well.

Excellent points! We finally agree!! LOL. I think one of the reasons that certain artists experience bigger sales is because they can follow up with strong singles. One thing Shania and Gretchen have in common is they both write their own music. Although Wilson mixes with Nashville writers, they both can write. They have better music, it isn't formulated like some.. I also agree with you on this: I don't think the whole reason Shania catches slack is because she crossesover, I think some, if not all, is because she doesn't use Nashville to make her records, she doesn't live in Nashville, and I think they feel like she uses them. And they use her too. So there is a balance.

Glad to see the correction -- yes PFT is her 20th Top 10... One other note. Shania has (8) #1 hits at country, and (3) #1s at AC in six singles released there. PFT is just her 7th single to AC.

Time to Whine: Here we go, again. The curse of Shania. Her songs pick up great plays, like PFT is doing, in the OVN slot. Which means no audience gain. Which means it sticks. If you don't want Shania to have another #1, you may just get that when BB changes its charts. Shania always struggles at large markets where the corporate dollar talks loud and clear. I'm done!

There was a HUGE boost this morning on Mediabase. I think it should come in at #7 BB, making it her #3 highest charter since YSTO.. YSTO-#1, FAFA-#4, PFT-#7...

Shania's had a few more hits bigger than "Party For Two" since "You're Still The One": From This Moment On: #6 Honey, I'm Home: #1 Man I Feel Like A Woman: #4 Come On Over: #6 as well as the two you listed.
