Except one you can say was a top 40 hit and one you can't.

Under both scenarios these are top 50 hits or even top 42 hits LOL
I might even suggest that for songs peaking at #40 and #42 that neither are hits, usually

Right around 1973 they also brought back airplay to the top 50 after removing it for a few years Right. Well, from the top 50, anyway. They still used it for positions 51-100. But from the 5/11/68 through 6/2/73 issues of "Billboard," it appears that the top 50 of the Hot 100 was completely sales-based -- no airplay info incorporated at all.

Still, there's a big perceived difference between nos. 40 and 41. There's a lot of cache to having a top 40 single on Billboard, even if it's only to chart watchers. If "Lego House" tumbles from here, Ed Sheeran could possibly be remembered as a one-hit wonder (assuming he has no other hits). If it moves up just two more spots, then he had multiple top 40 hits and to some people that changes their perception of him. But you're right, it doesn't affect general perception that much. Vanilla Ice had two top FIVE hits and he's regarded as a one hit wonder. I had to argue with someone the other day that Rick Springfield wasn't a one hit wonder with "Jessie's Girl"---they were shocked when I told them he had over a dozen top 40 hits!

Why was it the top 40 countdown and not top 50 (and, in turn, top 40 radio). Just because four hours took less time? And 40 sounded better than 50?

At the time, it was 3 hours, not 4. The average length of the song got longer as time progressed and the move to 4 hours happened in 1978
