All songs by every artist ever could be #1 if the songs that were ahead of it at its peak had not been more popular
So if you don't count the songs that were ahead of the Glee Cast in their peak weeks, they would have 200 #1's

Maybe the unluckiest #2 song of all time is "Live and Let Die" by Paul McCartney and Wings. In the summer of 1973 it spent three weeks #2 behind three different songs (The Morning After, Touch Me In The Morning, Brother Louie). 10cc's "I'm Not In Love" also spent three weeks at #2 behind three different number one songs: "The Hustle," "One of These Nights," and "Jive Talkin'" in the summer of 1975.

I believe three is the record. I went back through my Pop Annual and there doesn't seem to be anymore songs that were blocked from the top spot by more than 3 number ones.

This looks like Radioactive's week to sneak into the top 5.

In the UK Moves Like Jagger got blocked from #1 by 6 different songs! Our charts are a lot more fast-moving than yours though.
Also Love the Way You Lie was the year-end #1 here, but it only peaked at #2 lol (this *only* got blocked by 4 different songs though).
Also last year Sean Paul got blocked from #1 by 3 different songs (Chris Brown, Carly Rae Jepsen and Katy Perry).

Blurred Lines is gaining strongly in airplay. I wonder if it has a chance to jump to #1 this week? I think it has an outside chance, but it really depends on its' digital sales and whether it can make big gains in streaming (especially on-demand). The ITunes pop bars give one an idea of the relative popularity of a song compared to its' competitors, but not the actual # of downloads. I am guessing "Blurred Lines" will be 300K+ in sales this week, around 65-70M in airplay and 2.8M+ streaming which equates to more than 40,000 chart points. Should be an interesting HOT100 this week.

I agree, it is 3 happening multiple times (Smack That by Akon was the last one) It is not more than 3 because long running #2's either are accompanied by a long running #1 or end up hitting #1 themselves at some point.

It would be interesting to know which HOT 100 #1 is the biggest killjoy. The #1 song that kept the most songs out of the top spot. I know in the pre-Soundscan years "You Light Up My Life" kept 4 songs at bay (Keep It Comin' Love, Nobody Does It Better, Boogie Nights, Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue), but not sure if that is the record.

^ Loved all those songs from 1991.
Funny how the early years of every decade feature the hits that are least remembered / recurrent. Happened in the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and (sort of) the 00s.
Will future generations recall any Icona Pop or Jason DeRulo?!?

It's Hot 100 rank? No. 2. (A week later, Abdul's single actually dropped in sales while it went up to No. 1 on the Hot 100.)

Erin, I'm sure you know this, but that is because Billboard was still using their former methodology for compiling the Hot 100, while simultaneously 'previewing' the future composite charts.
It does prove that Paula certainly wouldn't have been #1 based on the more accurate BDS methodology.

Percy Faith's "Theme From 'A Summer Place'" also kept 5 songs out of the top spot back in early 1960 when it reigned for 9 weeks: Handy Man, Jimmy Jones (1 week) He'll Have to Go, Jim Reeves (3 weeks) Wild One, Bobby Rydell (1 week) Puppy Love, Paul Anka (2 weeks) Greenfields, The Brothers Four (1 week, 3 behind "Stuck On You" by Elvis Presley "You Light Up My Life" by Debby Boone, "We Belong Together" by Mariah Carey, and "I Gotta Feeling" by The Black Eyed Peas each kept 4 songs from the summit. Tik Tok by Ke$ha also blocked 4 songs. Oh yeah! Can't believe I forgot that one! So, it seems five is the record for most songs held back from the top spot by a single #1 song...for now.

This was an AT40 question on a recent episode of AT40: The 70s and Percy Faith was the answer which was later tied by Bryan Adams. With all the long running songs that pop up it is possible to get to 6 but what happens most of the tie is that when there is a long running #1, it is accompanied by a long running #2

It's time for another edition of comments from way back when! This week's edition: responding to someone from a year into the future telling me what next year's biggest hits of summer 2013 would be Justin Timberlake - yeah, right, he ain't coming back until 2026 Macklemore & Ryan Lewis - who? Daft Punk - how, I thought they were dead? Robin Thicke - lol, no chance in hell Imagine Dragons - eh, I can sort of see it, but I doubt it This is totally wrong. Summer is never a sausage fest. Where the vajayjays at?
