LOL, I thought that was such an interesting observation. Not that you asked, but I thought I'd see if we ever had a summer where no women hit #1. I only found it happening once in the last 40 years (though quite a few times before that). It was 1985, and there were no women that hit #1 that summer. Madonna hit #1 on May 11 with "Crazy For You," and then it was a long, dry spell until Whitney Houston's 1st number hit in October, "Saving All My Love For You." An interesting thing about this streak is that 14 straight weeks of this streak were by non-American artists. In the years since 1985, there were also two instances were a woman was only #1 for one week of the summer: 1988 - Debbie Gibson was the lone female with "Foolish Beat" 2004 - Fantasia's American Idol coronation song "I Believe" hit #1. (Ciara hit #1 in mid-September though, and I guess that's technically still summer .) EDITOf course, this goes to the top of the next page I'm referring to Austin's comment that this year looks to be a sausage fest for summer songs.

It's time for another edition of comments from way back when! This week's edition: responding to someone from a year into the future telling me what next year's biggest hits of summer 2013 would be Justin Timberlake - yeah, right, he ain't coming back until 2026 Macklemore & Ryan Lewis - who? Daft Punk - how, I thought they were dead? Robin Thicke - lol, no chance in hell Imagine Dragons - eh, I can sort of see it, but I doubt it This is totally wrong. Summer is never a sausage fest. Where the vajayjays at? They're the dudes who'll get all the "vajayjays" this summer tho (even Daft Punk)

Wow, that is actually really cool information! This might the first time 28 years that we will go a whole summer without a female at number one. Are there even any contenders? I mean, Selena Gomez is smashing, but #1 for her looks unlikely. I think the only way we're going to see a female hit #1 this summer is if Lady Gaga/Katy Perry/Britney Spears/Beyoncé decide to come back or "Same Love" managed to get there before the end of the summer season. The first option seems likely with Katy Perry, but not with the other three as Gaga's still down for the count at the moment, Britney's spending her summer with the Smurfs, and Beyoncé has no clue.

OK, so I had to check if we ever had a sausage-free summer, and the answer is no, not in the strictest sense. I immediately thought of 2005, when Mariah ran the whole summer with We Belong Together, and that's the closest we get. That year, 50 Cent last held #1 the week ending April 30, and then we had to wait until Gold Digger hit #1 the week ending Sep. 17. But we all know summer really runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day, so I'm counting it. In 1998, "The Boy Is Mine" was number one every week from June through August, but men were #1 on either side of that hit.("Too Close" by Next the last week of May, and "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" by Aersomith the whole month of September).

The 1985 statistic is unfortunate because the true #1 of the summer of 1985 was Madonna's "Into the Groove." Because it was not officially released as a single, it couldn't chart. However, that song was EVERYWHERE. This sort of thing also happened during the mid 90s when songs could only chart if released as a single ("Torn"). Just an observation, even though I know "Into the Groove" never truly hit #1. Billboard calls it a "phantom" #1.

Britney is releasing her new single "Ooh La La" on Monday so that will definitely be a potential #1 with first week sales/airplay/streaming.

Britney is releasing her new single "Ooh La La" on Monday so that will definitely be a potential #1 with first week sales/airplay/streaming. I doubt it's going to have high airplay and streaming in its first week. In fact, I doubt it's even going to debut at #1 on the Hot Digital Songs. It's a soundtrack single, and a pretty blah one at that. There's nowhere near as much hype around it as there would be for a new lead single from her, so high digital sales and airplay in its first week doesn't seem likely. Probably top five debut on digital sales, airplay similar to probably "We Can't Stop" in its first week, and streaming is going to be pretty low. Streaming is always low when songs start out, even on hyped releases. Add in the fact that the "demo" version has pretty much killed all of the "OMG, new Britney!" hype, and I doubt streaming will be much of anything, tbh. However, if she were to come back out of nowhere with a new lead single...

Wouldn't be summer without a Katy Perry song Just wonder what kind of music will Katy release this time (or in the future). We all know that Dance-pop don't do well now given the fact that some pop artist's single 'underperformed' on chart even with a previous radio hit single. Of course, there are some exceptions on that. Will she continue on that same sound? Just thinking.

^ Diplo single with Icona Pop. Not sure if that is the lead single, but it must be a poppy single with more of an urban beat. He did "Paper Planes" for M.I.A. and songs for Bruno Mars, Alex Clare, No Doubt and Snoop Dogg. She obviously won't change too much in her sound, but I expect her to jump on the current Rhythmic-Urban-Funk bandwagon.

I bet Katy comes back with a lighter pop song. Maybe not necessarily a "ballad" but at least a mid-tempo song with heavy production but light on the beat. Maybe a summery-sounding guitar track.

Digital Songs Update:Over on the Digital Songs chart, Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines," featuring T.I. and Pharrell, holds at No. 1, selling 315,000 downloads for the week (up 38%). It's the first song in nine weeks to sell more than 300,000. The last to do so was Bruno Mars' "When I Was Your Man," which rode a discounted 69-cent sale price in the iTunes Store to a big 340,000 download week at No. 1 (on the chart dated April 20). Florida Georgia Line's "Cruise" profits from the duo's CMT Music Awards exposure, as it jumps 3-2 with 225,000 (up 15%), its second-best sales week yet. Its biggest week was nine weeks ago, when a just-released pop-friendly remix of the song with Nelly helped boost its sales to 248,000. Total download sales for “Cruise” jump past the 4 million mark this week as well, as its cumulative total now stands at 4.1 million. It's only the fifth country song to sell more than 4 million downloads, following Lady Antebellum's "Need You Now" (6.1 million), Taylor Swift's "Love Story" (5.6 million), the Band Perry's "If I Die Young" (4.6 million) and Swift's "You Belong With Me" (4.3 million). Right behind "Cruise" on this week's Digital Songs chart is Miley Cyrus' new "We Can't Stop," which bows at No. 3 with 214,000. It's her best sales week for a song since Christmas of 2009, when "Party in the U.S.A." sold 285,000 downloads. "We Can't Stop" is the first single from Cyrus' forthcoming studio album, due out later this year. To compare, her last album's first single (and title track), "Can't Be Tamed," debuted on the Digital Songs chart at No. 4 with 191,000 downloads back in 2010. Daft Punk's "Get Lucky" (featuring Pharrell Williams), remains at No. 4 this week with 193,000 (up 1%), Imagine Dragons' "Radioactive" rises 6-5 with 192,000 (up 21%), and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' "Can't Hold Us" (featuring Ray Dalton) descends 5-6 with 174,000 (down 6%). Selena Gomez's "Come and Get It" is steady at No. 7 (154,000; down 2%), as is P!nk's "Just Give Me a Reason" (featuring Nate Ruess) at No. 8 (132,000; down 12%). 2 Chainz & Wiz Khalifa's "We Own It (Fast & Furious)" drops 2-9 with 131,000 (down 37%). Rounding out the top 10 on the Digital Songs chart is Cassadee Pope's "Wasting All These Years," debuting at No. 10 with 125,000. The winner of the third season of NBC's "The Voice" returned to the show's stage on June 4 to perform this song, which premiered the same day via digital retailers. It's the first single from her forthcoming full-length solo debut album; its release date hasn’t yet been announced. "Wasting" is Pope's second-largest sales week for a song, surpassed only by "Over You," which moved 152,000 for a No. 3 debut in late 2012. Digital track sales this past week totaled 24.9 million downloads, up 3% compared with last week (24.2 million) and down 2% stacked next to the comparable week of 2012 (25.3 million). Year-to-date track sales are at 604.8 million, down 3% compared with the same total at this point last year (622.2 million). www.billboard.com/biz/articles/news/chart-alert/1566510/queens-of-the-stone-age-get-first-no-1-album-on-billboard-200

Does that still make this a country song? I'm with you, here. I mean, the original, full fledged country version is still selling well, but a good 1.5 million is from the Nelly remix. Though, IMO, "Cruise" with or without Nelly is still very country. Also, not all 5.6 million of "Love Story" is for the country version either. I believe around 500k is for the pop mix. Which is also weird since the pop mix for "You Belong with Me" was never released for digital download sales.

LOL. Was Julio Iglesias and Willie's "To All the Girls I've Loved Before" considered country? Enough so that it topped Hot Country Songs. Confused country collabos are nothing new.
