J. Cole Album Could Move to No. 1 on Billboard 200 Next Week News/
By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles | July 03, 2013 8:23 PM EDT
It's not often that an album climbs to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, but that's just what might happen next week.
J. Cole's "Born Sinner," which debuted at No. 2 a week ago, looks like it should take the throne next Wednesday. Industry sources suggest that "Born Sinner," which spent a second week in the runner-up slot this week, may sell around 60,000 copies by the end of the tracking week on July 7.
That figure should be enough to fend off the week's new releases, which include titles by R&B singer Joe and pop/rock band Relient K, as well as the new Hillsong live album "Glorious Ruins." The biggest of those titles should be Joe's "Double Back: Evolution of R&B," with around 25,000.
The new Billboard 200 chart's top 10 will be revealed on the morning of July 10.
The last album to climb to No. 1 -- as opposed to debuting at No. 1 -- was Bruno Mars' "Unorthodox Jukebox" on the chart dated March 16. The set moved to No. 1 in its 12th chart week, after debuting at No. 2 on the Dec. 29, 2012, tally.

There was a time when all albums climbed to number one. Not quite as common these days I wonder, though: was that because we didn't have the SoundScan numbers to tell us exactly how much an album was selling, or because something in the world of music sales (marketing tactics, awareness, relationship between a single and an album, etc) was actually different?

Atleast it isn't doing Cake debut numbers (44k). It still hurts to see that figure equate to a #1.

I think both. It's only really been over the last ten or so years that first week sales have been so important. So much effort is put into getting large numbers for the first week because overall sales have dropped so being able to quote 100k in one week or whatever the goal total is can get an album/artist/label a lot of promotional leverage when it comes to touting achievements. When you consider that it's only been in the last five years or so that albums have been releasing not one, but two singles before its release that has become the norm. Back in the late 90s, albums released one single preceding its release and the second single would come a month or two (or three) later. One single was all you needed. Now many albums will have two singles and maybe some other album tracks out there for streaming or sampling - all before the album is released. That's why I find it amusing that when an album sells a million copies in its first week, conversations will always refer to how record sales are dropping "yet we have as many first-week-million-sellers as we had when sales were at their peak." Yeah, but it doesn't work like that.

Ooops! #confused www.billboard.com/biz/articles/news/1568875/j-cole-album-could-move-to-no-1-on-billboard-200-next-weekJoe and Relient K Heading for Top 10 on Billboard 200 Albums Chart By Keith Caulfield | July 06, 2013 The R&B singer and rock act could mark returns to the top tier. R&B singer Joe and rock band Relient K could both earn new top 10 albums next week on the Billboard 200 chart. Industry sources forecast Joe's new "Double Back: Evolution of R&B" may sell 25,000 or so by the end of the tracking week on Sunday, July 7. Meanwhile, Relient K's "Collapsible Lung" could sell around 15,000. The new Billboard 200 chart's top 10 will be revealed on the morning of Wednesday, July 10. "Double Back" could mark Joe's sixth top 10 album and his fifth consecutive studio effort to reach the top 10. His last album, 2011's "The Good, the Bad, the Sexy," debuted and peaked at No. 8 with 33,000 sold in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. As for Relient K, if the set starts in the top 10, it will be just the second top 10 set for the act. They have reached the region once before, with 2007's "Five Score and Seven Years Ago." The new album is not a guaranteed lock for a top 10 debut, and might bow just outside the top tier. Next week's new No. 1 will likely be J. Cole's "Born Sinner," which will step up to the top slot after spending its first two weeks stuck at No. 2. As previously reported, it may sell around 60,000 copies. On SoundScan's Building chart (below), J. Cole is No. 1, followed by the current Billboard 200 No. 1 set, Wale's "The Gifted." The Building tally is a precursor to the final Billboard 200 ranking -- reflecting the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week as reported by six major merchants. Kanye West's "Yeezus" is No. 3, while Joe and Relient K are Nos. 4 and 9, respectively. As for the rest of the top 10: Florida Georgia Line's "Here's to the Good Times" is No. 5, followed by Imagine Dragons' "Night Visions" at No. 6 and Daft Punk's "Random Access Memories" at No. 7. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' "The Heist" is No. 8 and Bruno Mars' "Unorthodox Jukebox" is No. 10. NIELSEN SOUNDSCAN BUILDING CHART Rank LW BB 200 Artist Title 1 2 J. Cole "Born Sinner" 2 1 Wale "The Gifted" 3 3 Kanye West "Yeezus" 4 NEW Joe "Double Back: Evolution of R&B" 5 6 Florida Georgia Line "Here's to the Good Times" 6 8 Imagine Dragons "Night Visions" 7 5 Daft Punk "Random Access Memories" 8 12 Macklemore & Ryan Lewis "The Heist" 9 NEW Relient K "Collapsible Lung" 10 13 Bruno Mars "Unorthodox Jukebox" The Building Chart reflects the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week (which ends Sunday) as reported by six major merchants: iTunes, Trans World Entertainment, Best Buy, Starbucks, Target and Anderson Merchandisers. Billboard estimates that they make up about 85% of all U.S. album sales.

I wonder, though: was that because we didn't have the SoundScan numbers to tell us exactly how much an album was selling, or because something in the world of music sales (marketing tactics, awareness, relationship between a single and an album, etc) was actually different? Yeah, but it doesn't work like that. In the 90s, a lot of the time, I didn't even know when an album was being released or if the artist had an album in stores yet. Now it's much easier to get information about release dates. If I want an album, I'll get it the week it comes out rather than just taking the occasional trip around the record store to see if there are any albums I want.

Those are hideous sales for a #1 album. Ciara should have released the week before so she could have gotten a #1 album.
