I saw this and decided to look at who they follow. They follow 65 people, including Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani... Odd yet, intriguing?

I love the hell out of Reba: Saw this earlier today and had myself a great laugh. She’s as funny as ever…GOD I wish they’d reboot her self-titled TV show!

Ridiculous. It was marketed as a country album, and it is a country album, and it charted on country albums charts. It deserves to be eligible for country categories.

In my mind, the award this year was always Stapleton's to lose, and now even more with Kacey out. As I've mentioned at the Grammy thread, even with its great numbers and solid reviews, I had a feeling that "Star-crossed" existing in such a gray area genre-wise could potentially alienate some of the country voting block/committee. They don't mention where the album will be eligible at, but don't think this album is pop enough to gain enough traction within pop voters to get her nominations.

The Rolling Stone article has said it is eligible for Pop Vocal Album, and Camera Roll is eligible for Best Country Song. www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/kacey-musgraves-star-crossed-grammys-country-1240878/

"camera roll" being eligible for a country category while the album overall is not makes absolutely zero sense to me, lol. If they're gonna shun her from country album categories, why not at least be consistent

If they're gonna shun her from country album categories, why not at least be consistent Grammys has always nominated songs from an album in a category where the album is deem ineligible. A recent example is Lizzo when she won pop vocal performance and progressive r&b album in the same year. Finally, Grammys has NEVER been consistent.

Kacey's album isn't country, and shouldn't be eligible for the country grammy's, marketed as country or not. However, I'm still waiting for them to do this to a straight white male, especially one from the south (as both Kacey and Lil Nas X are)

What a fat load of horseshit. People can’t sit here and tell me songs on that album aren’t wildly reminiscent of those from her debut — namely, “camera roll,” “hookup scene,” “angel,” “keep looking up,” and “easier said.” And people certainly can’t sit here and say that this album is ~too far gone from (whatever) country (is)~ when recent nominees of this category include Kelsea Ballerini’s Unapologetically and Keith Urban’s Ripcord.

If they're gonna shun her from country album categories, why not at least be consistent There is a huge different in one song and an entire album. Plenty of albums have had individual songs nominated in various genres. "camera roll" being eligible for a country category while the album overall is not makes absolutely zero sense to me, lol. Not every track on an album is necessarily the same genre/style, though. Look at Lemonade. Are you saying all of the songs on that album should have been in R&B?

Christ, this is not the 1980s-90s. You can't sit and tell me "camera roll" and "hookup scene" and "easier said" do not harken all the way back to her debut album. This genre has evolved past the fiddles and pedal steels, and this album is no less country than an album like Ripcord, which might I add was nominated for Best Country Album at the 59th Grammy Awards. I hate to break it to y'all, but star-crossed is just what this genre has come to in terms of sound in 2021.

For the record I don't think any of Star Crossed, Unapologetically, or Ripcord are particularly sounding very country to me personally (or in Ripcord's case good as well), but if you think they do sound country then good for you, both opinions are valid imo as everyone has a different idea of what is and isn't country and no one is wrong for what they think is and isn't. If everyone just accepted what was country and isn't it would limit discussion around the genre more. Everyone having the same opinion and mindset on something (that isn't dangerous) is boring.
I will also say labeling something as country music shouldn't automatically make it country music, as labels imo are very meaningless especially since so many of the music genres have different sounds, and can often times blend together and also take musical influence from artists not even in the genre it is labeled as.

star-crossed is not country. The fact that Unapologetically or Ripcord have been nominated for country, doesn't make Kacey's album any more country.

If you think both star crossed and ripcord are country, that’s valid. If you think both aren’t country (me) that’s valid too.
The issue I have with the Grammys is that they declared one country and not the other. And it seems as if the likelihood of something being deemed country or not is at least in part attached to the gender/race/music label of who is submitting it, and not just the music (daddy’s lessons not being declared country is another example)

Can someone tell me if there’s a thread for songs that were covered by country artists that were originally hits for another artist from another genre?
