HTU debuted on XM's Hwy 16 Wednesday (1-26) AUDIO CLIPmuch better than some of his recent singles... As mentioned in another post, his new studio album is due May 17, 2005 :)

Already 74 stations playing. Just a matter of time before this one goes #1.

Since it's a lead single, it'll probably go #1.
But that likely outcome may just be a blessing in disguise. I'm not completely convinced he's freed himself from his chart lull yet.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

Better than "Mockingbird", but I still don't really like it. I think his days of domination may be over for a bit (though he'll still be successful).

Better than the new stuff on his Greatest Hits 2 CD, but not as good as the singles from "Shock n Y'all".
I'll predict #5. Too bluesy for country radio.

Sounds alright, but I'm tired of the war comments. It could have been left out of this song

I'm predicting at least top 5...doesn't sound like anything he's put out recently. Sorting by audience on mediabase, he's at about 27 or so. I'm predicting he'll debut about 35 at BB. I'm thinking about 6 weeks til it hits top 10.

This song debuts #30 on BB. That matches the debut of "I Love This Bar". As much as I want Toby to do well, I just cannot get attached to this song. His highest debut is "Stays in Mexico" at #27, but that song stopped at #3. I can see this one doing the same.

The track certainly has early airpower (+918 bullet)
I believe there is the possibility this runaway train can come to a screeching halt.
I don't know. Toby Keith + lead single = #1 sounds like the likely formula to me, but it seems Tim McGraw and Kenny Chesney have stolen some steam from him so that may hinder his continuing dominance of this format.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

T I don't know. Toby Keith + lead single = #1 sounds like the likely formula to me So in other words: #1 - lead single = Toby Keith ? #1 - Toby Keith = lead single ?

Right now, this tune is some 300 spins ahaead of 'Drugs Or Jesus', according to the newest issue of R&R, although TK's tune is one thirty more stations.
We'll see how long this gap lasts.
I still expect Tim & Kenny to contend for the number one singles artist of the year, with Keith Urban it hot pursuit.

I still expect Tim & Kenny to contend for the number one singles artist of the year, with Keith Urban it hot pursuit. Well, I expect Toby Keith will probably remain ahead in the race with Tim McGraw's latest single. Kenny Chesney may actually be the more likely race here. And he's presently about 1700 spins ahead of the new Keith single with "Anything But Mine", but debut singles by blockbuster artists tend to be the hare in the hare and tortoise race and we'll see Toby Keith close the gap between him and Kenny in this race. Also, we have learned from Toby Keith's last four singles or so especially that his singles tend to stall just as they're entering the Top 10, and even lose their bullets during the week, and then there's unpredictable chart performance from there. We saw with "American Soldier" that effect, and despite losing its bullet mid-week, it suddenly surged to #1. But with "Stays In Mexico", the same story happened, only instead of surging, it went up a few positions to #6 but then shattered. Since this is a lead single from a studio album, I think the former case is more likely, but the latter is certainly possible too. And in either case, I can see this single crashing once it peaks. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

The fact that 'Stays In Mexico' was a stiff as compared to the spins for both 'Back When' & 'You're My Better Half' means that TK has ZERO chance of winding up as 2005's #1 singles artist; let's not even 'Mockingbird', since neither Tim nor Kenny had experienced such a huge flop in at least a decade, at least as far as Tim is concerned.
The fact that Tim's 'LLYWD' is losing spins at a VERY slow pace, combined with Kenny's recurrent airplay numbers for both 'I Go Back' (which would have been a multi-week charttopper if it hadn't been for 'LLYWD's record-breaking spin numbers) and 'The Woman With You' has made the race a three way battle between TM, KC & Keith Urban.

I believe it is an appropriate time to ask, since "Honky Tonk U" has been stuck at #9 for a few weeks now, which is especially interesting considering this is a lead single.
Has Toby Keith clearly and officially fallen into a slump?
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

I hope so. He is making some of the worst music out there. Which is a shame, because he used to be pretty decent.

I don't think his acceptance speech for the "hot" video award he won on CMT endeared any fans. Your thoughts?
I don't understand why he goes on the tangent when the fans vote I win. I think most of us know that some of the more savvy computer users and most of the younger fans know how to put in multiple votes and I have heard there are software programs that are available so they can get around the one vote per computer rule. I find most of the poll results on-line a joke especially on CMT. Interested in hearing your thought on these type of polls. You may think that it would balance itself since all artists have some level of savvy users?

Well, who knows if this track will suddenly gain a +400 bullet or something over the weekend.
But a current net loss for a multi-platinum artist off a lead single can NEVER be good, and it certainly looks like this is doomed to be another "Stays In Mexico".
I decided not to count "Mockingbird" here because though it didn't even go Top 20, this lead single was released on the heels of that sing;e's release, so something tells me they weren't really putting all the heart into the release anyway.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

The tracklisting for "Honkytonk University" has been confirmed today:
"Honky Tonk U" "As Good As I Once Was" "She Ain't Hooked On Me No More" "Big Blue Note" "Just The Guy To Do It" "She Left Me" "Knock Yourself Out" "You Ain't Leavin' (Thank God Are Ya)" "I Got It Bad" "Your Smile" "Where You Gonna Go" "You Caught Me At a Bad Time"
*
Oh my, looks like this record as a whole is going to suck just as badly for those who prefer the pre-Boomtown Keith.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

Is this song finished? If it is, this would be Toby's 3rd single in a row not to go #1. Maybe country radio is getting tired of him. I can only hope!

He's only down -30 spins this morning. I don't know if he is finished or not. It wouldn't surprise me to see him start gaining again (like another poster said).

Keep in mind that 'Stays In Mexico' barely made the cut on 'After Midnite With Blair Garner', garner only 52 'yes' votes out of 100 votes, with 48 'no votes'.
Furthermore, during the week it reached 'Breaker' status on R&R's chart (airplay on 60% of the panel), it only gained some 40 spins, which is REALLY pathetic.
That spin-buying spree that his label initiated to push it up to #3 shouldn't have surprised anyone; it moved to #5 with NO bullet in its 14th week on the chart, a time period in which virtually all of his last several charttoppers hat hit #1.
'Mockingbird' was just a horrible record, period.
He has moved up to #8 without a bullet in R&R, so we'll see if his label buys 400+ spins or rush releases his next single.

Has Toby's single officially reached its end?
8 10 TOBY KEITH Honkytonk U 4409 4556 -147 31.949
If so, this single has done even worse than "Stays in Mexico"! :o

Yes, this song is history, but keep reading.
As you all know, his new CD will be released on May 17th.
However, Blair Garner mentioned on his 'Afer Midnite With Blair Garner' show Thursday morning that he plans to go into the studio again to start work on a new CD which will be released BEFORE the end of this year; he's REALLY anxious to launch his own record label, and apparently just wants to satisfy his contract with his current label.
Does this make sense to ANYBODY??????????
