Th bigger problem lies with his tweets after the controversy sparked than the tweet that sparked the controversy.

But now he's got his tween fanbase crying over him because life is so hard for him.
But back to the subject, are we really to believe that he just twittered support of a show that was embroiled in a huge controversy using the dog whistle term 'family values' and he wasn't referring to the recent anti gay tirade? Come on. What other values have been talked about referring to this family except those views. Even his subsequent texts referring to freedom of speech is right out of the right wing playbook. If it looks like a duck and talks like a duck sometimes he's just a duck. Liam showing he has some issues with gay people. Maybe he was a little high so he was indiscreet enough to let those views out on Twitter.

He must have been high.
After reading those tweets, I've written him off. Gurl bye.

I am in 100% support of Liam. According to his sister, he just discovered DD and had no idea of the controversy. He is in the UK after all where Redneck TV shows aren't the popular thing in their news. He had every right to flip out at the press for this and I wish more celebs would stand up to those bullies. When he starts doing every drug on the planet like Justin Bieber then it'll be worth writing about and Liam is too smart to ever let that happen. 1D have performed at gay clubs in the past and Liam in particular has mentioned that he loves the support from that community. If anyone thinks Liam had negative intentions in mind then you really need to wise up. His life is too busy to follow every controversy the media covers especially when it was the American media with the DD case. European media which he listens to I'm sure didn't make this even a blip on their radar. Dragging Liam into this is the lowest of low. He likes the TV show and their values of being a close family. Big f**king deal! There are more important things in life than to try and tear down someone who had no bad intentions in mind. None of this will effect 1D's sales, concert, or airplay. Pop music isn't Country. 1D won't be Dixie Chicked.

Pop music isn't Country. 1D won't be Dixie Chicked. The DD controversy was widely reported in the UK. Moreover, Liam travels the world as part of his job and has quite the social media presence. Surely he would be aware. His use of the phrase "family values" speaks volumes. And no, 1D won't be Dixie Chicked because they didn't have a political position of substance in the first place.

Liam was bullied as a child for being 1) the sick kid (Kidney problem) 2) the singing kid 3) poor. Now he is being bullied as an adult even though he is healthy, successful singer, and rich. I guess Taylor Swift's "Mean" hit the nail on the head. There are bullies at any age and you got to learn how to defeat them in your own way. Liam didn't mean to say anything bad and he got mad, lashing out at those talking bad about his character. "Family values" he meant as being the values they hold of working together as a family unit, not their dad's beliefs in that article (which he didn't know about). I'm sure he has a lot of personal scars from being bullied and that's why he said to the press, Tyler, and hateful tweeters what he did. I don't believe he has one thing to be sorry for. The best thing he can do for now is just stay quite for a couple weeks and let it blow over. The press will move on and haters will find someone new to pick on

Some of these defenses are pretty poor. And that's why being a stan of someone isn't a good enough reason to try to come up with why so-and-so is innocent.
I haven't formulated an opinion on this yet to determine whether I feel he may be homophobic or not. I think it's a bit of a stretch, to be honest, but I also think that he can't be dumb enough to assume that a random tweet out of nowhere to a highly publicized racist and homophobic group/person/public figure has no internal meaning. But at the same time, I suppose I have tweeted at people after reading a book or watching a movie for the first time that I particularly enjoyed and wanted to voice my appreciation over. Maybe he genuinely was inspired by their sticking-togetherness?

Also in support of Liam. The boy doesn't have a malicious bone in his body. I do think he is struggling the most with the fame and he never seems to be out of the Funky Buddha nightclub drinking booze and spending money on loads of so called friends but he is in no way homophobic. His past tweets and friendships also support this in a small way. The kid has been bullied from a young age and in the UK the "family values" expression has a different meaning. Duck Dynasty isn't that big a deal over there and isn't watched by that many. The UK media don't even cover it all that much so I can well believe that Liam simply wanted to tweet his enthusiasm over a show to one of its stars like a fangirl. Love the fact he ranted about the media and management and the media proved him right with their failure to report facts and simply jump to conclusions.

Although to be fair, nobody can speak to his personality and whether he has a malicious bone in his body unless we actually know him personality. That's a empty defense.

We all know closet racists and homophobes who act one way in the light and another in the dark.

in the UK the "family values" expression has a different meaning Yes. In the UK "family values" still means what it used to in the US before the Republican far right exploited it for political purposes on the basis of religious scare tactics. In England, "family values" just means a family that spends time together and looks out for each other. Nothing deeper.

Could Zayn be any more checked out in "Midnight Memories"? Poor guy seems bored out of this mind. He was barely in the video too. It's time for that solo album, bb. He's far too talented and unappreciated.

I think if they all made solo albums in popularity it would be: 1. Liam 2. Zayn 3. Niall 4. Harry 5. Louis
