I have no interest in perpetuating the ST-debate-that-will-never-die, but I would like to point out the number of successful, popular, well-respected artists that are often overlooked for awards. Jo Dee Messina and Alison Krauss come to mind. This year in particular, Trace Adkins is one. In the past, Travis Tritt, Diamond Rio, & Clint Black, even when achieving commerical success, were overlooked. I realize none of these artists have the sales success of Shania, but I also don't think that is the most important thing. If it were, what would be the point of the awards? There would be no suspense if we all knew they were going to the top-sellers. I personally like it when talent, growth, and origniality are rewarded, which is why I am glad to see some surprising nominations such as Sara for album, Keith Urban for EOY, and B&R for video. I am also very happy about Gretchen's success. She broke through in a time when women were getting little notice, and that takes a lot of talent and charm.
I have liked Shania's music in the past, but nothing she's done lately has been all that exciting to me. People want to be touched. I would imagine that the passion and the production of the music is what wins votes. Shania seems distant to people for various reasons - she's not the first and she won't be the last. Don't take it so personally. I'm still waiting for Montgomery Gentry to repeat their 2000 CMA win and to be nominated for EOY. They are the best I have ever seen, but that doesn't mean my personal wishes for them will happen... That's the way the business is.
