Yeah, as much as I love Katy, she isn't one of those 'artistic' musicians that cares more about quality then quantity. She puts out solid pop songs that fit a certain mold and are accessible to the general public. No shame in that. She does include a song or two each album that has an artistry to it, but most of her career has been spent catering to pop fans.
And that's the reason I love the girl. She plays the game, and she plays it right. That's why she's the it girl of the moment. She does well with Dr Luke and Max Martin, and while she works with other producers, she understands that her and Luke/Martin are a great team. The moment she gets too big for her boots is when she starts to fall from grace

And this is why I'm not a fan. Catering to the general, the beige, the plain and hardly choosing to experiment, to make people think and to really not grow as an artist, puts me off.
The real legends took risks. Once this star fades, once people are tired of this image, she will need to evolve or else dwindle away.
She's doing very well now and she's wonderful, but I do not want to see her continue in this vein for another couple of albums. I'm already over it. I do like Dark Horse though.

ARTPOP is better than Prism though. ??? Arguable. I'd actually rank them about the same: C+/B- with three or four great songs and a bunch of mishaps.

Really though, if you want experimentation and boundary pushing, CHR/Pop is the last radio format (if you insist on terrestrial radio) you should be listening to or turning to for that. It's like going to McDonalds and complaining that they're still serving the same basic shit.

You're looking at the User score which is spammed by little monsters giving 10/10 to Artpop (and probably 0/10 to Katy). Their Metacritic scores are both 61, but Katy's previous albums got horrible reviews, while Gaga's previous albums got amazing reviews.

That whole post was sarcasm as I'm well aware of the spamming on that site. I do love Prism although I do wish it was a little more progressive.

I think it means they are more prone to give Gaga a higher score, so it's pretty telling that critical darling Lady Gaga could couldn't get anywhere near her previous albums, while Katy is starting to win them over and convince them that she isn't just a manufactured pop star.

Music critics are useless in my opinion.
Why do you need someone to tell you what's good music or not? With movies, you want critics so you don't waste time and money on a bad movie, but with Youtube and other streaming services you can listen to the entire album for free.
People should decide what they think is good music for themselves, they don't need 'experts' telling them what to like.

I agree for the most part, but I read reviews to get an overview and find out about other details that I might not find out otherwise. I do music reviews on my blog for the purpose of describing the song/album/remix to give a point of reference, for example if you like artist a, you might want to try artist b because she has a similar type of sound/style, etc.

I feel like pop fans read music reviews so they can determine who to send hate mail to.

I thought that Katy's first album was her most mature. There were sparkles of her singer-songwriter past in that record. Her Unplugged also showed how incredibly talented she could be.
Katy is clearly playing the game. She knows she is being treated as a pop star, and that's how she's playing it. Look at her more mature releases (Thinking of you, The one that got away, Unconditionally) -> clearly people don't buy that more serious persona. I don't see anything wrong with being a pop star delivering pop fodder. Isn't that what pop stars do? If it's time to move on, Katy will know and she'll make that step. Her public wants positivity anthems and that's what she's delivering. Anyway, maybe it's just my opinion, but doesn't Prism have more variety in music genres than Gaga's EDM-filled ARTPOP?
Lady Gaga was introduced as the ultimate pop star during the Fame and Fame Monster. Her dance pop music was fresh, and her persona was very superstar-like. And then things changed with Born this way, and now with ARTPOP. She completely abandoned the GP, and instead just catered to her gay fans. Her image of wearing absurd halloween costumes on a daily basis is just wacko. She's a great artist, but she's suffering from the massive attrition of fan base that artists before endured when they tried to be "progressive"/"different". Nothing wrong with this, but people shouldn't expect her to be the big-selling pop star that she once was. One problem that I see with her career is when EDM completely fades out, what will happen to her career that's largely built around it?

DWUW is flopping worse than Unconditionally. Unconditionally is actually doing well...everyone just wants to criticize katy.

It has been around in the rest of the world and I believe the USA is just finally embracing it and it will be here to stay, may not be so saturated but it will be a permanent part of the landscape in my opinion.

Some of her biggest hits (TEOG, Paparazzi, Telephone, DWUW) have nothing to do with EDM. I disagree. Her only single that isn't dance-pop is You and I. It's true though, dance-pop music will never completely die out, but it's likely that at some point it will fade to a point where it's very difficult to get a hit with it. Dance-pop music has been mainstream since the 80's at least but has constantly fluctuated in and out of popularity over the decades. Gaga's music has always been compared to some of the EDM (Electronic Dance Music) from the 80's like Ace of Base, ABBA, Madonna, Depeche Mode, etc.

Didn't see it either. I guess Capitol just recently told Billboard that they are going to promote it to Rhythmic.
