I just thought of something, thinking about the success of Wrecking Ball and Harlem Shake. Let's say I record an original song and post it to YouTube. And somehow, it goes totally viral, scoring 250 million views in one week. But it was not on sale anywhere digitally, and it was not sent to radio stations. Would it chart on the Hot 100? (Assuming it had enough points to be at least #100.) Would they even know who to credit the song to? yes Although it is available now. Ylvis charted in week 1 without a single available for purchase or any airplay

Couldn't come soon enough, reinfeld. Give us a breather already, RiRi- give listeners time to miss ya.
However, "What Now" is the latest single from the album, so who knows how long the absence will be. That, or if she tags along for another "featuring" track.

If "Stay' drops off next week, which looks likely, will it mark the first Hot 100 without Rihanna since late 2009 (when "Russian Roulette" debuted)? Looks like that Rihanna reign is finally gonna let up... since "Run This Town" .

Ylvis charted in week 1 without a single available for purchase or any airplay This does make me wonder, though. What if I were just to post a video of me playing a completely original song the guitar. It manages to somehow go viral, racking up 15 million views from the US in a single week. I posted the song onto YouTube as: Me doing an original song "Song Title Here." How would it go down on the Hot 100? Would it count? Like, would it be listed as: -- 2 CARTONOMILK1994 Song Title Here 2 1
What if I totally went and did a cover, though. Again, not available on iTunes and obviously not sent to radio. Just your regular run-of-the-mill YouTube cover. Say, "Wrecking Ball." Again, I don't post my name, only the cover. It's such a spectacular cover that it goes viral. Would it count as a new song, or go towards the original? Would this happen: 1 1 MILEY CYRUS Wrecking Ball 1 5 -- 2 CARTONOMILK1994 Wrecking Ball 2 1 I know the possibility of either of these events ever happening is slim to none, but what if it did?

Billboard would contact you and ask how you want to be credited. And at that point a million other blogs would've contacted you also. If you remained purely anonymous then yes they'd probably go with your youtube handle.

Covers are counted as separate (see Glee songs), so your hypothetical cover song would chart.

That band Walk Off the Earth have charted with a few viral Youtube covers haven't they?
Karmin's cover of Look At Me Now probably would've been their debut Hot 100 hit back in 2011 if they included Youtube back then.
