That's unusual. I can't remember the last time the #1 on HITS and BB didn't match.

music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart-watch/week-ending-sept-15-2013-albums-upset-1-153719701.html Week Ending Sept. 15, 2013. Albums: An Upset At #1Paul Grein - Chart Watch There was a squeaker and an upset at the top of this week's Billboard 200. The Weeknd's first studio album, Kiss Land, debuts at #1 with first-week sales of 99K, about 500 more copies than Keith Urban's Fuse, which bows at #2 (98K). It was the closest race for #1 since November 2011, when Michael Buble's Christmas nosed out Nickelback's Here And Now by even fewer copies. This week's race was expected to be close, but the artists were expected to be in the opposite order. So, what happened? The Weeknd did a bit better than projections for his album (90-95K). Urban did a bit less (100-105K). The Weeknd is the stage name of Canadian artist and producer Abel Tesfaye. Kiss Land is his second top 10 album. Trilogy, a compilation of three previously-released mix-tapes plus three previously-unreleased songs, reached #4 in November 2012. Kiss Land dethrones Ariana Grande's debut album, Yours Truly, which bowed at #1 last week. This marks the first time that debut albums have opened in the #1 spot in back-to-back weeks since October 2011, when J. Cole's Cole World: The Sideline Story and Scotty McCreery's Clear As Day did this. This has happened two other times in the Nielsen SoundScan era. In the fall of 1997, The Firm's The Firm—The Album and Mase's Harlem World debuted at #1 in back-to-back weeks. In the summer of 2001, D12's Devil's Night and Alicia Keys' Songs In A Minor achieved the feat. Susan Boyle's I Dreamed A Dream and Ke$ha's Animal, which were back-to-back #1 albums in 2009-2010, both debuted at #1, but they didn't debut in back-to-back weeks. (Boyle had a six-week run at #1.) Kiss Land sold 59K digital copies, which puts it at #1 on Top Digital Albums. Fuse is Urban's first album since he gained broader fame this year via his judging role on American Idol. You've probably read that Urban is the only judge from Season 12 who will be back on the judging panel when the Fox show begins its 13th season in January. Fuse is Urban's fifth top 10 album. How does that compare with other Idol judges, past and present? It puts him in fourth place among the 11 individuals who have had a regular seat on the judging panel since the show debuted in June 2002. Mariah Carey has had the most top 10 albums (16) of any American Idol judge, past or present. She's followed by Steven Tyler (nine, all with Aerosmith), Jennifer Lopez (seven), Urban (five), Paula Abdul (three), Harry Connick Jr. (two) and Nicki Minaj (two). How about the other four judges? Randy Jackson climbed as high as #50 with Randy Jackson's Music Club: Volume One in 2008. Ellen DeGeneres failed to chart with her 1996 comedy album Ellen DeGeneres: Taste This. Simon Cowell and Kara DioGuardi have never released albums as artists. I think it's fair to say that there isn't a strong connection between being an effective judge on Idol and having a lot of top 10 albums. Carey wasn't in her element as a judge. But Connick, with just one-eighth as many top 10 albums as Carey, has drawn praise from such Idol experts as Yahoo!'s own Lyndsey Parker. He'll be joining the panel next year after having appeared on the show in a mentoring role. Urban, who was born in New Zealand, isn't the only New Zealand native who's near the top of this week's charts. 16-year old newcomer Lorde is near the top of the Hot 100 with her breakthrough hit, "Royals." (It zoomed from #8 to #3 last week.) Lorde's debut album, Pure Heroine, is due Sept. 30. Fuse enters Top Country Albums chart at #1, displacing Luke Bryan's Crash My Party. It's Urban's fourth album to reach #1 on this chart. 2 Chainz's sophomore album, B.O.A.T.S. 2: Me Time, enters The Billboard 200 at #3. It's his second top five album. The title is an acronym for Based On A T.R.U. Story, which was the title of 2 Chainz' debut album. That album debuted at #1 in August 2012. Janelle Monae's sophomore album, The Electric Lady, debuts at #5. Monae's 2010 debut, The ArchAndroid, reached #17. Monae was featured on fun.'s "We Are Young," which is the 10th best-selling song in digital history. The Jimi Hendrix Experience had a #1 album in 1968 titled Electric Ladyland. Arctic Monkeys' fifth studio album, AM, debuts at #6. It's the group's highest-charting album to date. Favourite Worst Nightmare hit #7 in 2007. AM enters the U.K.'s Official Albums Chart at #1 this week. All five of these albums have reached the top spot. Sheryl Crow's eighth studio album, Feels Like Home, debuts at #7. All eight have made the top 10, as did a 2003 compilation, The Very Best Of Sheryl Crow. The new album enters Top Country Albums at #3. Feels Like Home is a well-worn title. A Linda Ronstadt album with that title hit #75 in 1995. A Norah Jones album with that title hit #1 in 2004. Even so, it's a good country title, a mash-up of Rascal Flatts' Feels Like Today and Dixie Chicks' Home. Tamar Braxton’s Love & War drops from #2 to #8 in its second week. As such, it ranks ahead of the album that kept it out of the #1 spot last week, Ariana Grande’s Yours Truly, which drops from #1 to #9 in its second week. (Grande's album is still ahead in total sales to date.) Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" jumps from #10 to #1 on Hot Digital Songs, dethroning Katy Perry's "Roar." "Wrecking Ball" sold 477K copies this week. The song is also expected to dethrone "Roar" on the Hot 100. You’ll find out for sure later today when we post Chart Watch: Songs. Here’s the low-down on this week’s top 10 albums. The Top Five: The Weeknd's Kiss Land debuts at #1 (99K). It's his second top 10 album…Keith Urban's Fuse debuts at #2 (98K). It's his fifth top 10 album… 2 Chainz's B.O.A.T.S. 2: Me Time debuts at #3 (63K). It's his second top 10 album…Luke Bryan's Crash My Party rebounds from #5 to #4 in its fifth week (53K). It has been in the top five the entire time… Janelle Monae's The Electric Lady debuts at #5 (47K). It's her first top 10 album. The Second Five: Arctic Monkeys' AM debuts at #6 (42K). It's the group's second top 10 album…Sheryl Crow's Feels Like Home debuts at #7 (36K). It's her ninth top 10 album… Tamar Braxton’s Love & War drops from #2 to #8 in its second week (35K)… Ariana Grande’s Yours Truly drops from #1 to #9 in its second week (31K)….John Legend’s Love In The Future drops from #4 to #10 in its second week (30K). Seven albums drop out of the top 10 this week. Nine Inch Nails’ Hesitation Marks drops from #3 to #12. Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines drops from #7 to #14. Jaheim’s Appreciation Day drops from #6 to #17. Avenged Sevenfold’s Hail To The King drops from #8 to #13. Justin Timberlake’s The 20/20 Experience drops from #9 to #31. Imagine Dragons’ Night Visions drops from #10 to #23. Earth, Wind & Fire's Now, Then & Forever debuts at #11. The venerable group first cracked the top 20 in April 1974 with Open Our Eyes. Kaskade’s 10th studio album, Atmosphere, debuts at #16. This is the highest-charting album to date for the DJ and "house" musician. Fire & Ice hit #17 in 2011…Rise Against’s Long Forgotten Songs: B-Sides & Covers 2000-2013 debuts at #19. The punk band's last three studio albums made the top 10. (I'm not sure "long forgotten" is the best phrase to put in an album title.) Gloria Estefan's The Standards debuts at #20. It's her 12th solo studio album; her first to crack the top 20 since Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me in 2004. The first album of standards by a contemporary pop performer in the modern era to make a splash was Nilsson's A Little Touch Of Schmilsson In The Night (#46 in 1973). The first to crack the top 30 was Willie Nelson's Stardust (#30 in 1978). The first to crack the top 10 was What's New by Linda Ronstadt & The Nelson Riddle Orchestra (#3 in 1983). The latter album really alerted the industry to the potential of "traditional pop" albums. The Teen Beach Movie soundtrack drops from #20 to #25 in its ninth week. It’s #1 on Top Soundtracks for the ninth week. It’s the first TV soundtrack (from a made-for-TV movie or a series) to top this chart for nine weeks since High School Musical 2 was #1 for 17 weeks in 2007. The Great Gatsby: Music From Baz Luhrmann’s Film drops from #32 to #39 in its 19th week. It’s the week’s highest-ranking soundtrack from a theatrically-released movie for the ninth non-consecutive week. Derek Minor's Minorville debuts at #40. It's the Christian hip-hop artist's fourth album. The title echoes Nelly's 2002 smash Nellyville. Bruno Mars’ Doo-Wops & Hooligans drops from #74 to #82 in its 152nd week. It’s #1 on Top Catalog Albums for the 10th week. Madonna's MDNA World Tour enters Top Music Videos at #1. It's Madonna's 10th music video to top this chart. It follows Madonna (four weeks at #1 in 1985), Madonna Live: The Virgin Tour (10 weeks in 1986), Ciao Italia: Live From Italy (eight weeks in 1988), The Immaculate Collection (four weeks in 1991), Drowned World Tour 2001 (one week in 2001), I'm Going To Tell You A Secret (two weeks in 2006), The Confessions Tour (two weeks in 2007), Celebration: The Video Collection (one week in 2009) and Sticky & Sweet Tour (one week in 2010). Insidious Chapter 2 was #1 at the box-office over the weekend. Coming Attractions: Jack Johnson’s From Here To Now To You is expected to debut at #1 next week. Also due: Justin Moore’s Off The Beaten Path, Avicii's True, Maybach Music Group’s Self Made, Vol. 3, Chris Young's A.M., Grouplove’s Spreading Rumours, MGMT’s MGMT, The Devil Wears Prada's 8:18, Billy Currington’s We Are Tonight, Elvis Costello and the Roots' Wise Up, Ghost, Zendaya's Zendaya, Five For Fighting's Bookmarks and Johnny Lang's Fight For My Soul.

Something is wrong here. Billboard just posted Keith Urban edges the Weekend www.billboard.com/articles/news/5695587/keith-urban-edges-the-weeknd-for-no-1-debut-on-billboard-200Country star Keith Urban debuts at No. 1 with "Fuse," edging out the also-arriving "Kiss Land" by the Weeknd at No. 2. Less than 3,000 copies separate the albums, which enter the chart with rounded figures of 98,000 and 96,000, respectively, according to Nielsen SoundScan. (The latest sales tracking week ended Sunday, Sept. 15.)

Another SoundScan-era low for album sales (4.5m).
And, yes- Keith Urban has the No. 1. Paul Grein will be revising his Chart Watch column.

Keith Urban Edges Out the Weeknd for No. 1 Spot on Billboard 200 By Less Than 3K Copies
Last week's race for the No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 between Ariana Grande and Tamar Braxton was nothing compared to the showdown on this week's tally.
Country star Keith Urban debuts at No. 1 with "Fuse," edging out the also-arriving "Kiss Land" by the Weeknd at No. 2. Less than 3,000 copies separate the albums, which enter the chart with rounded figures of 98,000 and 95,000, respectively, according to Nielsen SoundScan. (The latest sales tracking week ended Sunday, Sept. 15.)
Ariana Grande Debuts At No. 1 On The Billboard 200
That's the closest margin between Nos. 1 and 2 since early January, when less than 2,000 copies separated the "Les Misérables" soundtrack at No. 1 (92,000) and Mumford & Sons' "Babel" at No. 2 (91,000).
Last week, industry sources had forecast Urban would likely debut at No. 1, but it would be a close race between he and the Weeknd (the stage name of R&B singer Abel Tesfave).
Last Wednesday (Sept. 11), sources suggested that "Fuse" was aiming to sell 100,000 to 110,000, but by Friday, that sum had shrunk to 100,000 even. Meanwhile, the Weeknd's album went from 90,000 to 100,000 on Wednesday to a solid 95,000 on Friday.
During release week, Urban performed on NBC's "Today" (Sept. 10, the day of the album's release) and ABC's "The View" and CBS' " Late Show With David Letterman" (both on Sept. 11). As for the Weeknd, he played "Jimmy Kimmel Live" on Sept. 12 and toured through the week, playing two shows in California (Berkeley and Santa Barbara) and one in Seattle.
Urban's debut of 98,000 means the chart’s top-selling album sells fewer than 100,000 copies for the first time after six weeks. The No. 1 seller last dipped below 100,000 on the Aug. 10 chart, when Selena Gomez's "Stars Dance" entered with 97,000.
For Urban, "Fuse" is his fifth top 10 album and second No. 1 after 2009's "Defying Gravity” bowed atop the list with 172,000. ("Defying Gravity" also narrowly beat a No. 2 debut that week: Prince's "Lotus Flow3r/MPLSOUND/Elix3r," which started with 168,000.)
Urban last charted with 2010's "Get Closer," which debuted and peaked at No. 7 with a 162,000 start. "Fuse" marks the "American Idol" judge's lowest sales start for an album since 2002's "Golden Road" drove onto the chart with 67,000 at No. 11.
As for the Weeknd, while "Kiss Land" is his first full-length studio effort, he did chart with one previous set, 2012's "Trilogy." The compilation of three previously released mixtapes debuted at No. 4 with 86,000 on the Dec. 1, 2012, chart. It has sold 385,000 to date.
At No. 3 on the Billboard 200 this week, 2 Chainz follows his No. 1 debut effort, "Based on a T.R.U. Story," with a second top five hit, "B.O.A.T.S. II #METIME." The new album arrives at No. 3, selling 63,000 copies. "Based on a T.R.U. Story" sold more than twice as much in its first frame, shifting 147,000 units.
However, the same week "Based" opened at No. 1, 2 Chainz was also sitting atop the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart with the album's single "No Lie." Comparably, his new album's current single, "Feds Watching," has yet to climb higher than No. 20 on that chart. But 2 Chainz does open at No. 1 on the Rap Albums chart, his second leader on the list.
Luke Bryan's "Crash My Party" rises one rung on the Billboard 200 to No. 4, selling 53,000 (down 22%).
Janelle Monáe secures her best sales week and first top 10 album as "The Electric Lady" bows at No. 5 with 47,000. The set, which is her second full-length effort, follows her debut album, "The Archandroid: Suites II and III." It arrived in 2010 and debuted and peaked at No. 17 with a start of 21,000.
One rung behind Monáe are Arctic Monkeys, who claim their best sales week since 2007 and highest-charting album ever. The British group's new album, "AM," enters at No. 6 with 42,000. The start beats the No. 7 peak of 2007's "Favourite Worst Nightmare," which still owns the band's largest sales frame: 44,000 in its debut week.
Arctic Monkeys are currently enjoying their first Alternative airplay hit since 2006, as the “AM” single "Do I Wanna Know?" rises from 40-39 on the chart this week. The band's only other Alternative hit is its breakthrough single, "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor," which peaked at No. 7 in 2006.
The sixth, and final, arrival in the Billboard's top 10 is Sheryl Crow's "Feels Like Home." The set, which is the singer/songwriter's first country effort, bows at No. 7 with 36,000. On the Top Country Albums chart, it opens at No. 3 behind Urban and Bryan, respectively.
On the Billboard 200, "Feels Like Home" marks Crow's ninth top 10 album, and all eight of her studio efforts have reached the top 10. (She also scored a top 10 title with her 2004 greatest-hits album, "The Very Best of Sheryl Crow.")
Last week's No. 2 album, Tamar Braxton's "Love and War," falls to No. 8 with 35,000 (down 70%). Last week's No. 1, Ariana Grande's "Yours Truly," drops to No. 9 with 31,000 (down 77%). Closing out the top 10 is John Legend's "Love in the Future," dipping 4-10 with 30,000 (down 55%).
Over on the Digital Songs chart, Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" soars from No. 10 to No. 1 with 477,000 downloads sold—the second-largest sales week of the year for a song. The track rises to the top with a 312% gain in the wake of its Sept. 9 music video premiere. Only one song this year has sold more in a week: Katy Perry's "Roar," which debuted at No. 1 with 557,000. This week, "Roar" slips from No. 1 to No. 2 with 331,000, down 11%.
Lorde's "Royals" is also pushed back one position, despite a sales gain of 17%. It falls 2-3 with 263,000. Avicii's "Wake Me Up!" is forced down as well, though it gains by 3%. It moves 3-4 with 202,000.
Lady Gaga's "Applause" rises 6-5 with 184,000 (up 15%) following the diva's performance of the track on ABC's "Good Morning America" (Sept. 9) and stopping by Bravo's "Watch What Happens Live" (Sept. 11). Eminem's "Berzerk" slips 4-6 with 165,000 (down 12%). Jay Z's "Holy Grail," featuring Justin Timberlake, is steady at No. 7 with 146,000 (down 8%). Drake's "Hold On, We're Going Home," featuring Majid Jordan, rises one slot to No. 8 with 143,000 (up 13%).
Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines," featuring Pharrell and T.I., descends four positions to No. 9 with 123,000 (down 27%). Rounding out the top 10 is Lana Del Rey & Cedric Gervais' "Summertime Sadness," moving 8-10 with 118,000 (down 7%).
Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending Sept. 15) totaled 4.5 million units, down 10% compared with the sum last week (5.06 million) and down 11% compared with the comparable sales week of 2012 (5.11 million). Year-to-date album sales stand at 195.8 million, down 6% compared with the same total at this point last year (207.3 million). Digital track sales this past week totaled 22.1 million downloads, down 1% compared with last week (22.3 million) and down 4% stacked next to the comparable week of 2012 (22.9 million). Year-to-date track sales are at 932.4 million, down 3% compared with the same total at this point last year (962.4 million).
Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2012 when: P!nk earned her first No. 1 album with "The Truth About Love," as it bowed with 280,000. It was one of six new albums that started in the top 10, with the compilation "Good Music Cruel Summer" starting at No. 2 with 205,000.

A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: Anyone who checked out the SoundScan Album Chart this morning and saw The Weeknd at #1 should be apprised that SoundScan has since revised its rankings, placing Keith Urban in the top spot. Of course, if you had been consulting the HITS Album Sales Chart, there would’ve been no such confusion, as Urban was #1 from the time our chart closed yesterday afternoon. We would’ve been happy to explain chart preparation to the fine folks at SoundScan, if they had only called us. For future reference, our switchboard number is (818) 506-8800. Thank you for your kind attention. (9/18p)

Week Ending Sept. 15, 2013. Albums: The Week With Two #1 Albums.music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart-watch/week-ending-sept-15-2013-albums-upset-1-153719701.html.There was a squeaker and some backstage drama at the top of this week's Billboard 200. When Nielsen SoundScan first published the chart early Wednesday morning, The Weeknd's first studio album, Kiss Land, was #1 with first-week sales of 99K, about 500 more copies than Keith Urban's Fuse, which was listed at #2 (98K). But the chart was re-run several hours later and Urban came out on top after all. In the rerun, Urban's tally was unchanged at 98K, but The Weeknd's tally dropped from 99K to 95K. It's not uncommon for Nielsen/SoundScan to adjust the final sales tallies. It's just that the tinkering rarely reverses the order of finish for the top two albums. This last happened in the week ending Aug. 31, 2008. The Game's LAX was initially declared the champ in a close race with Slipknot's All Hope Is Gone, but the two albums switched places in a recount. .Fuse is Urban's second #1 album. He first topped the chart with Defying Gravity in April 2009. This is Urban's first album since he gained broader fame this year via his judging role on American Idol. Urban is the only judge from Season 12 who will be back on the judging panel when the Fox show begins its 13th season in January. At that time, the judging panel will, for the first time in the show's history, include an artist who has had a #1 album in the previous six months. This nearly happened this past season. Nicki Minaj had a #1 album in April 2012, nine months before she started as a judge. .Four other Idol judges had had #1 albums prior to beginning their judging stints, but those chart-topping albums were years in the past. Mariah Carey's most recent #1 album, E=MC2, was in April 2008, nearly five years before she began her judging stint in January. For Jennifer Lopez, the lag time between her most recent #1 album and her debut as an Idol judge was nearly nine years. For Paula Abdul, it was 11 years. For Aerosmith's Steven Tyler, nearly 14 years. How does Urban's tally of two #1 albums compare with other Idol judges, past and present? It puts him in a five-way tie for second place among the 11 individuals who have had a regular seat on the judging panel since the show debuted in June 2002. Carey has had the most #1 albums (six) of any American Idol judge. She's followed by Abdul, Lopez, Tyler, Minaj and now Urban, with two each. .Harry Connick Jr., who will be joining the panel in January, has yet to land a #1 album. His highest-charting album, Only You, reached #5 in 2004. How about the other four judges? Randy Jackson climbed as high as #50 with Randy Jackson's Music Club: Volume One in 2008. Ellen DeGeneres failed to chart with her 1996 comedy album Ellen DeGeneres: Taste This. Simon Cowell and Kara DioGuardi have never released albums as artists. .Urban isn't the only New Zealand native who's on fire on this week's charts. 16-year old newcomer Lorde is near the top of the Hot 100 with her breakthrough hit, "Royals." (It zoomed from #8 to #3 last week.) Lorde may well land a #1 album of her own when her debut album, Pure Heroine, is released on Sept. That album debuted at #1 in August 2012. .Janelle Monae's sophomore album, The Electric Lady, debuts at #5. All five of these albums have reached the top spot. .Sheryl Crow's eighth studio album, Feels Like Home, debuts at #7. (Grande's album is still ahead in total sales to date.) .Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" jumps from #10 to #1 on Hot Digital Songs, dethroning Katy Perry's "Roar." "Wrecking Ball" sold 477K copies this week. The song is also expected to dethrone "Roar" on the Hot 100. You’ll find out for sure later today when we post Chart Watch: Songs. Here’s the low-down on this week’s top 10 albums. The Top Five: Keith Urban's Fuse debuts at #1 (98K). It's his fifth top 10 album…The Weeknd's Kiss Land debuts at #2 (95K). It's his second top 10 album… 2 Chainz's B.O.A.T.S. Imagine Dragons’ Night Visions drops from #10 to #23. .Earth, Wind & Fire's Now, Then & Forever debuts at #11. (I'm not sure "long forgotten" is the best phrase to put in an album title.) .Gloria Estefan's The Standards debuts at #20. The latter album really alerted the industry to the potential of "traditional pop" albums. .The Teen Beach Movie soundtrack drops from #20 to #25 in its ninth week. It’s #1 on Top Catalog Albums for the 10th week. .Madonna's MDNA World Tour enters Top Music Videos at #1. Insidious Chapter 2 was #1 at the box-office over the weekend. .Coming Attractions: Jack Johnson’s From Here To Now To You is expected to debut at #1 next week.

Indeed- now, will the album equivalent even break the top 100? Silly team for not releasing a CD/DVD combo, or even a standalone CD, as it did in other countries.

Madonna right? Yes. A CD release of a tour album would have put it in the top 100 for the first week (maybe even the second) - <based on chart runs of recent prior tour albums from Madonna>

^Yes, that is right. :) Yah, The Confessions Tour and Sticky & Sweet Tour- both of which had CD/DVD packages- sold 40K and 29K, respectively, in their first weeks, ranking Nos. 15 and 10, respectively.

How did Keith Urban lose 5K in sales? That is quite a drop.

Keith Urban didn't "lose" anything- SoundScan is the official chart, not HITS, which is a separate organization. :)

I thought Gloria Estefan's "Hold Me, Thrill Me" album came out In the 90's?? Wow! They really messed that up. They have been known to be off by a few years, but by 20!
