Though true, many of these listed songs became huge hits. "Cruise", "SBAT", "Hey Girl", "Bonfire", "Southern Girl" and "CGSIFM" hit top 5. 2 more hit top 10 ("Truck Yeah", "Red Solo Cup") That's half. The other 7 failed to make any significant impact. Doesn't change the fact that they were poorly written, but you can take grace in knowing very few became hits. And zazie makes a good point, there will be duds in every era, there will always be that "traditional vs new" attitude. First of all, "1994" was still a top 15 hit and sold like crazy. "Eight Second Ride" was a top ten hit. "Kick It In The Sticks" has a stupid ridiculous amount of views on YouTube and also was a big downloaded song. And "Drink To That All Night" is brand new and has a ton of stations on board already. To also comment on Zazies point, the "newer" stuff has never been this bad IMO. At least back in the 70's, 80's, and 90's the "newer" country was played next to the more traditional country. And by the way when I say traditional it doesn't mean it's all steel guitars and getting cheated on songs. I think we can all distinguish true country music. But now the traditional stuff is almost not getting played at all. With the new young demographic of fans coming into country, they are getting the impression this music is the norm. That "Boys Round Here" is what country radio has been playing for 20 years...but it's not. The problem I have is the path continuing this way till most of the 16 to 40 age bracket is used to this "newer" stuff and country radio gets used to this " newer stuff till the regular country music we grew up listening to is gone forever. If pop, hip hop, and rock influence this genre to the point of where it is now much longer the lines separating the genres will be blurred together. I am a fan of some of the newer different country over let's say the past decade ("Hillbillies", "Hicktown", "You Belong With Me", "XXL", etc.) but the past three years have been disturbing and if no one notices in this industry (Cause it doesn't matter what I think) it will be too late. Wikipedia says "Eight Second Ride" peaked at 12 but like I've said before, there's like 400 different charts so you never know. IMO hit means top 10+ And you're right, "Drink To That All Night" was just released, I somehow missed that. I think we can agree, that the problem isn't that there's no good music, the problem is radio refuses to play it.

^ "Eight Second Ride" went top ten on Mediabase. But let's not miss the point of the post on peak position #'s.
And a song doesn't have to go top ten to make an impact. I think we can agree on that. Every single country fan knows what "1994" is. ("Independence Day" is still played on my station here and that song is almost as old as I am, and that did not go top ten on any chart).

Ok, let's try to stay on the topic at hand here...the last few posts have diverted a little bit away from George's IGAC. :)

It'll definitely be interesting to see how the next few years play out with regards to George getting played at mainstream Country radio. It may be a bit naive, but I sort of feel that however goes George, so goes Country radio. Sure, most of the stuff played today isn't anything remotely resembling traditional Country (if you want that, tune in to the Texas stations playing artists like Aaron Watson, Randy Rogers Band, Josh Abbott, etc). But when George's new releases cease to be played on the radio, I think it'll be a sad day, but one we know will come and possibly sooner than expected. I'm sure he'll get a boost from the CMAs... especially if he wins the dang thing. I'm a big fan of his current album and think it's one of his better efforts, and if "I Got A Car" ends up being his last number one, I'll be happy he was able to get one more, and that it was a song as great as this one.

I think we're going to find out in short order George is still very much relevant at country radio. I think this will be his biggest hit since "I Saw God Today". The King still carries a lot of clout and the fact he's still with the same label MCA after all these years is unprecedented. That alone sets him apart from any other older artist who's lost their well-funded record deals and ended up on lesser imprints.
George is the only country artist in my lifetime, and that is almost 60 years, who can and has had the ability to survive at radio as long as he has. We'll likely not see this ever again.

This tied with Luke Bryan's new single, which is also impacting Nov. 4, for three adds on the Mediabase panel this week, but, of course, Luke's label was still promoting the previous single last week, so I think it's safe to say Luke should definitely get more adds than George next week. I'm sticking to my prediction this won't make the top 30 and I really don't think it will be a milestone hit for him. There's simply not a whole lot to the lyrics, certainly nowhere near the level of depth the lyrics of "I Saw God Today" had.

To be fair to "I Got A Car", this is a much different song than "I Saw God Today". Now if I had to choose which song has a bigger impact and deeper lyrics, obviously it's "I Saw God Today". Apart from the last verse "I Got A Car" is a lighthearted feel good song, while "I Saw God Today" is a serious message song. While both songs aren't on the opposite ends of the spectrum of subject, to me it's still comparing apples and oranges.

"I Saw God Today" is my least favorite single... the lyrics and story to this song are 100x better than ISGT.

There's simply not a whole lot to the lyrics, certainly nowhere near the level of depth the lyrics of "I Saw God Today" had. Because we all know that depth of lyrics constitutes chart position in 2013. I would argue the hook in IGAC is stronger than that in I Saw God Today, as it sticks in my head much more than any George single since maybe Run. Everybody has their own opinions, but I would advise against the lyric argument to make this point. Otherwise Drinking Man would have been a multi-week number one song :)

So you're saying this is doomed because it won't get as many adds as Luke Bryan out of the gate? I think that just about applies to every artist not named Luke Bryan... I never said this song was doomed just because it has the same adds date as Luke Bryan's song. I was commenting on what information we have so far, which includes the early adds both songs have received and George's early chart debut. I don't think Luke's song will in any way affect this one's chart run. Also, dajross6, I'm not saying I think this won't be a hit because it isn't lyrically deep (at least, in my opinion, but I guess I see how one can find the lyrics moving), nor that I think songs that are lyrically deep are automatic hits. However, I am saying that I don't think this will become George's biggest hit since "I Saw God Today" because it addresses a much simpler theme. A song doesn't have to be deep to become a hit, but I don't see much of a chance that "I Got a Car," which is about a pretty simple, cliche idea, can have the overall impact that "I Saw God Today" did. To make a second point, lyrics aside, I'd say it will be difficult for George Strait to release a career single this close to what I see as the end of his radio presence. It seems to me an artist's radio success usually tapers off slowly and it isn't common for a career-defining hit to come just before the artist's radio career totally "caves in."

I would argue George's biggest single was back in 1990 (I'm not sure what the actual charts would say even with the inflated #1 weeks of the late 90s and early 00s), but I can't imagine people believe IGAC will be career-defining in any way. We're talking about a guy who is chasing down 100 top 40 songs, 44 or so chart-toppers, and Billboard's #3 country artist of all-time. I think IGAC is a good song, probably a top ten, and hopefully better. Whether a song is better or the "overall impact" the song has seems more of an individual spin. We could compare single sales I guess, but that's not really comparing apples to oranges either with the advance of digital sales today.
There is probably equal chance of the song peaking at #30 or at #10 in my eyes, so I'm interested to see how this plays out.

^For what it's worth, I ranked George Strait's biggest hits back in 2010. This is what I said back then:
Last week, Billboard published a list of Michael Jackson's top 50 hits (as a solo artist and his hits with the Jackson Five). That got me wondering and I decided to rank the top 51 hits of George Strait's career (44 #1s and 7 #2s). Two things: One, the list is top heavy of his multiple week #1s he had between 1990-2009. Two, I received help in getting chart data from select Strait titles from Jon Solo (thanks a lot!). You know how I rank titles. First number will be weeks at #1 or #2, followed by weeks in the top 40. ALL comments will be appreciated! Ready?
1. Love Without End, Amen-1990-5-20 2. One Night At A Time-1997-5-20 3. I've Come To Expect It From You-1990-5-19 4. Write This Down-1999-4-32 5. Check Yes Or No-1995-4-18 6. What do you think?
If someone has the chart runs for Here For A Good Time and Give It All We Got Tonight (the missing #2s), I can rank those as well. Thanks in advance!

Man seeing a list like that really makes me wish we didn't have 30-50+ week runs for songs:
24. The Big One-1994-1-16 25. You Can't Make A Heart Love Somebody-1995-1-16 26. You Look So Good In Love-1984-1-15 27. The Chair-1985-1-15 28. Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind-1985-1-15 29. Heartland-1993-1-15 30. What's Going On In Your World-1989-1-15 31. Ocean Front Property-1987-1-14 32. Baby Blue-1988-1-14 33. It Ain't Cool To Be Crazy About You-1986-1-14 34. Ace In The Hole-1989-1-14 35. If You Ain't Lovin', You Ain't Livin'-1988-1-14 36. Fool Hearted Memory-1982-1-13 37. All My Ex's Live In Texas-1987-1-13 38. Let's Fall To Pieces Together-1984-1-13 39. Nobody In His Right Mind Would've Left Her-1986-1-13 40. Am I Blue-1987-1-13 41. Famous Last Words Of A Fool-1988-1-13 42. Baby's Gotten Good At Goodbye-1989-1-13 43. A Fire I Can't Put Out-1983-1-13 44. Right Or Wrong-1984-1-12

^ Isn't that how long all the songs that went top 5 or 10 on the chart spent? Even though I'm knowledgable about the charts the last decade, I would like to know if that was normal, cause I believe it was in the 80's and 90's?
Got a feeling "I Got A Car" will spend more than twenty weeks on the chart....25 to 30 would be my guess.

To be clear, I never said "I Got a Car" was better than "I Saw God Today" or am comparing the two. I'm just saying "I Got a Car" will be George's biggest hit record SINCE "I Saw God Today" in terms of overall impact and chart success. That being said, this one ranks in the top-50 of the 94 singles he's had chart at country radio in 32 years. Big hit and will ride up much like Joe Nichol's "Sunny and 75."

I've been a follower since the CMT message board days and since Billboard's changes, him and myself included have been rather uninterested it seems in the charts these days. I used to spend a lot of time following and reviewing the Billboard chart. I no longer feel like keeping up with the daily trends of the chart or the +/- of a particular song. Luckily this board at least helps keep me up to date for the most part and I thank everyone for their input and opinions. Wherever you are Jon Solo, I hope you are well.

Slides back to #58 on the new chart as it battles for adds. The good news is that the song takes a nice jump up the Indicator Chart which should bode well for the long-term success of the song. Sure the Indicator chart has smaller stations on it, but there seems to be genuine interest by stations who have added it so far.

There are so darn many new songs and artists. I was looking the todays Country Air Check and dear God, they're popping out of the woodwork. Names I've never heard every week, and not just one or two. I think I liked it better when the labels were more selective and didn't sign every singer who walked through the door. But then again, in years past they didn't have the equipment to make Mickey and Minnie mice sound like they could actually sing. So as long as they look good, the labels aren't really taking as big a risk as they once did,

Meant to comment earlier last week that I've been hearing "I Got A Car" quite a bit on the radio already (disclaimer: I am in Texas ha). Glad to see the push for "I Got A Car" in the past two Country Aircheck editions, particularly this weeks just released tonight. It's got IGAC up to #40 on the smaller Activator chart, and as dajross6 pointed out I think this all points to long-term success of the song. I'm still hoping to see George perform on the CMA's and think that MCA would have enough clout to get King George his own performance slot. After all, the same thing happened at the ACM's this past year with George performing GIAWGT and teaming up with Garth Brooks for the Dick Clark tribute. George was also to perform at the CMT Awards in June (with no nominations), but the passing of his father happened around about the same time so he cancelled.

I am going to play the role of a deejay for just a moment. Ready? "Now with his latest single, I Got A Car is YOUR new C.M.A. Entertainer of the Year, George Strait!" Relive the moment: www.youtube.com/watch?v=M47SMioLKUo

Stealth appearance on the Mediabase top 50 this morning. Hopefully it can stay on so it's a little easier to track.
