Chely Wright's "Jezebel" was on VH1-Country last night and reminded me how much I loved this single, and how badly it tanked on the charts. So I was wondering... what singles do you all think should have been hits, and what possible reasons do we have for why they were not?
As far as "Jezebel" is concerned, I still can't figure it out, except that Chely isn't exactly a household name in country and the single was released during the female lull. There was also some controversy with her fan club making mass requests, if memory serves.
I will try to think of others, but I am interested in yours...

Chely's fan club controversy was over Bumper........not anything previous to that.
As for me....anything Ty Herndon released that didn't go #1.

Ditto on Sixwire's "Look At Me Now".
As far as Jezebel is concerned... the song stalled right before Chely left MCA. I loved that song! I bought that cd just for that song.
Some more... Rhonda Vincent "If Heartaches Had Wings" Shelly Fairchild "Tiny Town" Tammy Cochran "White Lies and Picket Fences" and "Dead of the Night" Rushlow "Sweet Summer Rain" Craig Morgan "Look At Us" Jamie O'Neal "Frantic"

"Getaway Car" by The Jenkins. Great chorus. ~ Jim I couldn't agree with you more on that one. I still wish Epic would have released How Much Can One Man Love You from Ty's Big Hopes CD.

Speaking of Tammy Cochran, any word on if she's ever gonna release anything new? Well she was dropped by Epic so until she gets a new deal I doubt it. She is one my favorite singers. She can really belt out the tunes.

Yes, she sure can. I recall her getting dropped but was never informed if she ever got picked up by another label or not? I could see Broken Bow signging her.

4 Runner had Getaway Car out not too long before The Jenkins and I really liked it. The Jenkins don't impress me to much.

I thought they were good. I was never impressed by 4runner, but I also know that Susan Ashton recorded it before any of the other acts and her version is about 5 mins long.

Ms. Wright's exceptional 'Back Of The Bottom Drawer' was a multi-week #1 here in L A @ KZLA, but barely cracked the national top 40.
My all-time favorite Brooks & Dunn single 'Every River' from their 'Steers and Stripes' masterpiece, peaked @ #13 in R&R, which was a MAJOR disappointment for me as well.

Kim Richey's "Every River" is excellent. She did write the song and sang it with the guys on one of the awards shows. If you don't have any Kim Richey albums, they are must haves!

'Postmarked Birmingham' was another WONDERFUL song that I forgot to mention; it was a top-three single here in LA @ KZLA, but it only peaked in the high thirties @ R&R, which was VERY disheartening to me.
I don't know that lead vocalist's name, but his voice is TERRIFIC, and their greatest hits CD is among the VERY best ones I've ever purchased!!!!

Heavy Liftin' peaked at 32 on Billboard.
Henry Paul sang lead for BlackHawk on Postmarked Birmingham, I think. Good song.
I could list a million songs that didn't chart as high as I would have liked -- my taste is not in the mainstream. I'll mention ten, but I pretty much know why they didn't do too well. Some at least got to the top 30 or 40.
1. Dwight Yoakam, The Back of Your Hand 2. Patty Loveless, On Your Way Home 3. the Jenkins, Blame It On Mama -- I'm one of the 10 or so people in the USA who aren't in the radio business and who have a copy of their CD, which I really like. But I see why they didn't make it on radio. Their Rodney Crowell song didn't do as well as Mr. Urban's (it didn't chart at all).
4. Gary Allan, Lovin' You Against My Will 5. Rick Trevino, In My Dreams 6. Daryle Singletary, That's Why I Sing This Way 7. Jill King, One Mississippi 8. Lane Turner, Breathless 9. Vince Gill, Young Man's Town 10. Trent Willmon, Beer Man

Oh Zazie you reminded me about One Mississippi, but the only version I've heard is Terri Clark's. That should have DEFINATELY been top 10, and I agree with Patty Loveless too... amazing song.

"Rollin" by Big & Rich. Should have shot straight to #1 after their NBA all star appearance. THAT performance was hot like FI-YAH

Oh, there are so many...!
Ticket Out Of Kansas - Jenny Simpson. (Does anyone remember Jenny? I think she had the bad luck of coming out right at the time when Nashville was in the middle of its "Belting Diva"-stage, and she didn't fit in with that image...)
Since I've Seen You Last - JoAnna Janet
You Don't Lie Here Anymore - Shelly Fairchild
Good Time - Jessica Andrews
Half A Man - Shannon Brown
Cold In California - Allison Moorer
Burnin' The Roadhouse Down - Steve Wariner (I can't remember if this was really considered a hit or not. But man, if not, it should've been!)
Me And Emily - Rachel Proctor
I'll be back with more...!

I am pretty sure that when the NLYE CD was out, there were some mass requests being made that p'd off radio. I remember because at the same time, Trisha Yearwood fans were having similar problems with the IO CD. I don't know that it was Chely's fan club per se...
Agreeing emphatically with a few of these:
Patty Loveless "On Your Way Home" Shelly Fairchild "Tiny Town" B&D "Every River"
and adding:
Trisha & Garth, "Squeeze Me In" (I think it peaked quickly at 16 and then dropped like a rock) Trick Pony "Pour Me" Clay Davidson "I Can't Lie to Me" Montgomery Gentry "Cold One Comin' On" (and one of the most striking videos I've seen should have gotten award nominations) Kenny Rogers "There You Go Again" Travis Tritt "Girls Gone Wild" Reba "I'm Gonna Take that Mountain"
And Big & Rich's "Wild West Show" is probably my favorite song from their CD, but it's gotten the least attention of their singles.

I liked Regina Regina's version of that song better. Where are they now? "Who's Gonna Love You" by Evangeline Anything by.... Jennifer Day Alecia Elliott Stephanie Bentley Heather Myles Kelly Willis I love the girls. And what happened to Kellie Coffey? One successful single, a great album with no followup single, and then what? I loved "Texas Plates," but then BNA withdraws her new album, and poof, she disappears. If Kellie Coffey can't make it, then it should give all new artists pause. ~ Jim
