Yep but Delicate is just about the only late album single to be a hit (outside of country) in the last year or so without a remix. Granted she might not need a late album single to make the 2020 year-end, if Lover becomes a single now it could be big enough to make 2019 and/or 2020.

Month 9, August 2019

From now on I’ll keep these forecasts a bit more brief, since I can’t spend as much time polishing them now that I’m a full-time college student. The only real difference this time around is that I’ll cover fewer songs than usual. As for the forecast itself, I’ve noticed that the songs are skewing towards less likely than before, and that is because we’re approaching the end of the chart year. Maybe starting in November I’ll start looking into songs that’ll miss 2019 but make 2020, songs that’ll make both years, and songs that’ll miss both. Depends on how I’m feeling then.

I’ll cover the August 31st Hot 100 this time.


Guaranteed to make the YE:

Ran$om(Up to #5 with consistently huge streaming. Probably already a lock for the YE)
Goodbyes(#9 and making solid gains on the radio as well as holding on to decent streaming like most Post Malone songs. I doubt it’ll return to its #3 peak, but it’ll definitely make the YE)
Someone You Loved(#11 and seemingly poised to enter the top 10 off of strength across the board, it’ll make the YE for sure)
Beautiful People(#18. After having emerged as the successor to I Don’t Care, I can see this song even making a run for the top 10 thanks to strength across the board. Will make the YE)


Likely to make the YE:

Boyfriend(Down to #20, with rising radio balancing out falling streaming and sales. It’s not performing immediately as well as previous Ariana singles this year, however it’s still pretty likely)
Knockin’ Boots(#34 and still gaining. So far it’s looking like a pretty likely contender if it continues gaining like this)
My Type(#35 and still rising off of both radio and streaming, although its rise has been slower lately. Still pretty likely to get in)
Panini(Obviously Panini isn’t performing well as OTR, however Panini has managed to stay in the top 40 for 9 weeks now. If it declines slowly enough or catches on more on radio it could absolutely make the YE)
All to Myself(It may have taken a hit to #43 this week, and also doesn’t have the obvious pop crossover appeal that Tequila and Speechless have, I can still see this having a good chance of getting in thanks to performing well on country stations)
Shotta Flow(#45 and seemingly on the way out, I could still see this slipping in low)
Clout(#52 and possibly in its last week, however I do believe that Clout will likely make the YE thanks to how it has performed on streaming, and only now it has debuted on the radio songs chart, maybe it could even beat the 20-50 rule to further secure its chances)
Never Really Over(Falling hard to #65, however, I can see this slipping in if it can last just 1 more month on the hot 100)



Might make the YE:

Baby(Just got boosted to #24 this week, but considering we don’t know if this momentum will last, I can’t say for sure what’ll happen)
How Do You Sleep?(#36 and rising, and Sam Smith is a consistent radio darling. However, it’s also still late in the year, so this could go either way)
Cash S**t(#39 and still slowly rising, but now it has competition with Hot Girl Summer. At this point I can’t tell whether one, both, or neither of these Megan Thee Stallion songs will make the YE)
Rearview Town(Up to #40 and still gaining, although it is gaining slowly and somewhat late into its run on country radio)
Trampoline(#42 and still rising. My personal prediction is that this will rise to the top 20 then fall off as soon as it’s dropped by radio)
Only Human(#46 and consistently rising. I can totally see this becoming an unlikely radio hit like Hey Look Ma, I Made It, or I could also see it stalling out here)
One Thing Right(#49 and making slow but steady gains. It’s hard for me to tell where it’ll peak, so its chances at the YE depend on if it can get into the top 30 and stay there)
Earfquake(#86 and falling off pretty quickly, however, it could still sneak into the YE if it gets a full 20 weeks)


Unlikely to make the YE:

China(Down to #50, but so far has been consistent. I don’t believe that staying consistent in the top 50 will be enough to make a serious play, and I see no indication that that’ll change)
Go Loko(Down to #63 and seemingly on the way out, I doubt it’ll make the YE at this rate)
Lalala(Up to #64 since it now has a video, but now that it’s been charting for awhile and stuck in the 60s-70s the whole time, and I can see it remaining there. This will most likely miss)
Press(Down to #68 but mostly consistent, however, it can stand a slight chance if it can last on the hot 100 and beat the 20-50 rule)
It’s You(#76 and has been stranded in the 70s for its entire run. At this point this will almost certainly miss unless something crazy happens)


Too early to tell:

Note: I'm also considering the possibility of these making the 2020 YE.

Lover(Just debuted at #19 and only not guaranteed because 1, it just debuted so we can’t tell what kind of traction it’ll have yet, 2, there’s already two other Taylor Swift songs on the radio right now, 3, it’s late into the chart year, and 4, we have had even higher debuting Taylor Swift songs miss their respective YE(...Ready For It? Debuted at #4 around this time of year and still missed that YE). I believe that Lover still has about a 75% chance of making the YE though regardless)

Hot Girl Summer(Down to #22 in its second week, so far it’s too soon to tell where it’ll go from here)
Motivation(Just debuted at #33. I do expect it to fall in its second week due to a loss of streaming and sales, however, this absolutely could be a radio hit. Normani has had radio hits before, but those were collaborations with previously proven radio darlings(Khalid and Sam Smith), so this will be a test to see if Normani can achieve that on her own)
On Chill(Just leaped up to #57, but will that great momentum continue? It’s hard to tell just yet)
Time(#69 and making serious momentum off of pop radio, but so far we can’t tell whether this will be another Let You Down or another Lie)

I think you're jumping the gun on Lover, it will be reliant on radio and right now it hardly has any and isn't gaining there. If it gets a significant radio push I would agree but it's much too soon

After looking at Simon Falk's Billboard Hot 100 predictions, I now believe there's an actual chance that Never Really Over could entirely miss the 2019 year end list. It currently has 1555 points in my calculations, and the projected cutoff is around 1800 points. Although it has a maximum of 8 weeks left to chart (and only needs 250 more points to be above the cutoff), I don't see it lasting a full 20 weeks. So the question is, how many more weeks can it possibly chart for?

On average, not counting album bombs, it is dropping 10 spots a week. For example, two weeks ago it dropped from #38 to #50, and although last week it dropped from #50 to #65, it would have only dropped to #60 if not for Young Thug's album bomb (exactly 10 spots). This week it is projected to fall to #80 according to Simon Falk, but take away the Taylor Swift album bomb (and Young Thug's album bomb as well the week before), it would have just dropped from #60 to #70, which is exactly 10 spots again. Using this assumption, it would stay at #80 next week once the Taylor Swift album bomb fades (although theoretically it actually lost performance and would have dropped another 10 spots from #70 to #80).

The week after is very important in what determines the fate of this song, considering Post Malone will have an album bomb (and he usually gets big ones so I expect most, if not all of the songs on the album to chart). Without the album bomb, Never Really Over would only drop from #80 to #90 (and probably to #100 the week after). However, with at least 10 new Post Malone songs charting, it could completely push it off the chart. Never Really Over before this week would have charted for 14 weeks (and have 1695 points using my calculations). The following are multiple different scenarios of the song's chart run and the projected amount of points for every scenario (assuming it is at #80 on its 14th week):

Knocked Out By Post Malone & Doesn't Return: 1695 Points (Will Definitely Miss)

Knocked Out By Post Malone & Returns For 1 Week After: 1745 Points (Will Probably Miss)

Knocked Out By Post Malone & Returns For 2 Weeks After: 1795 Points (Pure Toss Up)

Knocked Out By Post Malone & Returns For 3 To 6 Weeks After: 1845 To 1995 Points (Pretty Safe)

Survives Post Malone & Leaves The Week After: 1752 Points (Will Probably Miss)

Survives Post Malone & Stays For 1 More Week After: 1802 Points (Pure Toss Up)

Survives Post Malone & Stays For 2 To 5 Weeks After: 1852 To 2002 Points (Pretty Safe)

This is just a rough estimate, and I could be completely wrong (so don't take my words as fact). My best projection is it will last at least another month before dropping out in the 1800 to 1900 points range, which means it will probably make the 2019 year end list somewhere in the bottom 10. However, the possibility of it being knocked out by Post Malone's album bomb and not returning is pretty possible too, considering some of the songs from the album might take a few weeks to drop out, and by then Never Really Over would have lost too many points to even re-chart. In conclusion, the song is a pure tossup and it will be very borderline in either making or missing the 2019 year end list.

PS: I also want to mention that Earfquake is in a similar position but it's lower on the charts and is dropping at a slower rate.

Not in the slightest. Never Really Over's crash was entirely dependent on a couple weeks of radio freefall which are over now, and it should be stable. EARFQUAKE on the other hand, might not even survive this week. It'll come back the week after regardless, but post will certainly knock it out and if it returns after that it'll be very low.

You're probably right, I mean, it just debuted there, and in the past we've had other Taylor Swift debuts hit even higher around this time of year(...Ready For It?) and still miss the YE. I'm moving it to Too Early to Tell. Thanks for pointing that out.

By same position I meant it points wise and the fact it could be killed off by Post Malone as well. I know its performance is reliant on different factors so maybe I should have worded my words better. I do also agree it has a lower chance than NRO in terms of making the YE proper (NRO could still get 2000+ points while Earfquake will be lucky to even hit 1800+ points).

The reason I said dropping at a slower rate was that it has only been slowly dropping in the 60s-70s for at least a month now (it would have stayed around the same spot if not for Young Thug). Meanwhile NRO has been consistently dropping for the last few weeks, and although I can agree that once its radio losses level out it should stablize, I'm not exactly sure if it will still be on the charts by then or not.
