Video killed the radio star and streaming is killing the digital star. I find it very depressing. To my mind digital sales is the best gauge of a song's popularity, with on-demand streaming next (forget radio). I think "Dark Horse" could sneak into the #1 spot due to its' superior on-demand streaming #s. If not this week then next week.

hmm....60k difference between T and DH. That's about the same as the airplay difference. Should be super close. And Dark Horse is ahead of Timber on Spotify and Vevo, this could be the week!

Plus radio (and now streaming) will translate to album sales, which obviously are not counted on H100, for several artists. So if we compare DH to Timber, one could assume that Prism's continued lofty ranking is a result of DH's airplay and that some consumers have opted to buy KP's album rather than just the single. Single sales only tell part of story. (The best recent example of this would be GS and OMN - GS did not have an album to go with it, so single was only option, while M5 already off of a big hit single Payphone, had Overexposed. Certainly some people chose to buy the album over the single.)

Radio listener or not one cant deny that sales and various forms of streaming is a better measure of user demanded records the user is demanding directly. Radio trys to shape user opinion or guess. There is no guess work involved in what people will buy and listen to when left to their own devices.

Radio has a bunch of different formats, so a track can be a hit at one format, but, overall, not be that big of a hit.

I also think Timber will somehow squeeze out one more week (even if just barely). Could be in or around as close as that week when Royals beat The Monster by 1/2 a hair. It's beyond a done deal though that Dark Horse (like The Monster) is a shoe in for #1 next week unless something crazy out of nowhere happens last minute like that Wrecking Ball viral video debacle lol. Odds of that happening again are slim and none (aka basically 99% not happening lol) so DH should prepare itself for a lengthily stay at #1 starting next week. Just like Teenage Dream, her 3rd and 4th singles will prob. end up staying at #1 longer than the first. Granted, when Roar came out there was a LOT of competition. During that whole period, almost ever song in the top 10 was smashing. If Roar came out today, she'd positivelt get more than the 2 weeks.
I don't see Say Something having any chance at #1 now. Def. will be a solid top 5 (prob. peak at #3 or #2) but Katy still has yet to release the video! SS is just not getting the consistent mega pop updates that numerous songs slightly above it and def. below (more importantly as those songs are quickly gaining on sales) are getting. I see Happy and Talk Dirty being the biggest threats to Katy in the next month. By then, Say Something's sales and overall points will most likely start eroding behind 'Happy' and 'Talk Dirty'.

www.billboard.com/articles/news/5877859/pitbull-kehas-timber-still-tops-hot-100-bastille-lorde-reach-top-10Pitbull & Ke$ha's 'Timber' Still Tops Hot 100; Bastille, Lorde Reach Top 10 By Gary Trust, New York | January 22, 2014 The collaboration continues to conquer the chart, while OneRepublic takes over atop Radio Songs and Beyonce crowns the Streaming Songs chart. Pitbull and Ke$ha post a third week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Timber." Meanwhile, OneRepublic scores its first No. 1 on the Radio Songs chart with "Counting Stars" and Beyonce does the same on Streaming Songs with "Drunk in Love," featuring Jay Z. Plus, Lorde and Bastille each climb into the Hot 100's top 10. As we do each Wednesday, let's run down the numbers behind the Hot 100's top 10 and more. Pitbull's second Hot 100 No. 1 and Ke$ha's third topper remains in charge of the Hot 100 despite not ruling any of the Hot 100's three main component charts (Digital Songs, Radio Songs and Streaming Songs) for a second week. Still, the continued multi-platform popularity of "Timber" keeps the song atop the Hot 100. It rebounds to its No. 2 highpoint (3-2) on Streaming Songs with 5.4 million U.S. streams (essentially even from last week), according to Nielsen BDS, and holds at its No. 3 peak on Radio Songs, gaining by 6% to 131 million all-format audience impressions, according to BDS. On Digital Songs, which it led for four weeks, "Timber" falls 2-3 with 202,000 downloads sold (down 11%), according to Nielsen SoundScan. The track concurrently spends a third week at No. 1 on the Hot Rap Songs chart. Below "Timber" on the Hot 100, Katy Perry climbs into the runner-up spot (4-2) with "Dark Horse," featuring Juicy J. The track tops Digital Songs (261,000, up 7%) and the subscription services-based On-Demand Songs chart (1.9 million, down less than 1%) for a second week each. It rises 5-3 on Streaming Songs (5.2 million, up 8%) and becomes Perry's 14th top 10 (and 12th in-a-row) on Radio Songs, where it trots 11-9 (82 million, up 22%), earning the Hot 100's top Airplay Gainer award for a third straight week. Dating to the Radio Songs chart's December 1990 launch, Perry's 14 top 10s ties Beyonce's sum for fifth-place among women. Mariah Carey, the leader among all artists, boasts 23, followed by Rihanna (22) and Janet Jackson and P!nk (15 each). In this week's episode, we break down Katy Perry's latest hit and Shakira's new single, then speak to Lucy Hale about her debut single. Subscribe to the podcast on iTunes HERE. In terms of overall Hot 100 chart points, "Timber" narrowly claims the top rung over "Horse," finishing first by a mere 2% margin. With the former down by 4% and the latter up by 10%, the stage could be set for "Horse" to gallop into the Hot 100's winner's circle next week. While it dips to No. 3 from its apparent No. 2 Hot 100 peak after two weeks, OneRepublic's "Counting Stars" becomes the band's first No. 1 on Radio Songs (2-1; 142 million, down 2%) after waiting at No. 2 for five weeks. It slips 4-5 on Digital Songs (156,000, down 15%) and returns to its No. 6 peak (7-6) on Streaming Songs (4.2 million, down 5%). Rounding out the Hot 100's top five, A Great Big World and Christina Aguilera's "Say Something" revisits its best rank (5-4) and Eminem's former four-week No. 1 "Monster," featuring Rihanna, descends 3-5, while collecting a 12th week at No. 1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Passenger's "Let Her Go" holds at its No. 6 Hot 100 peak (and leads Hot Rock Songs for a second week). "Go" gains in airplay, pushing 8-7 on Radio Songs (88 million, up 6%). As Lorde's former nine-week breakthrough Hot 100 No. 1 "Royals" remains at No. 7, the New Zealander zooms to her second top 10, as "Team" jumps 11-8. The latter song makes across-the-board gains, bulleting for a second week at No. 8 on Digital Songs (133,000, up 7%) and rising 13-12 on Radio Songs (77 million, up 13%) and 19-18 on Streaming Songs (2.6 million, up 1%). "Team" additionally reaches the top of the Rock Digital Songs chart (2-1), which "Royals" led for 16 nonconsecutive weeks from September through earlier this month. One Direction's No. 6 hit "Story of My Life" bumps 10-9 on the Hot 100, powered largely by its 14-10 lift on Radio Songs, where it's the vocal group's second top 10; "What Makes You Beautiful " reached No. 5 on Radio Songs in June 2012. In between, the quintet missed the airplay tally's top 40 with five entries. Radio programmers have credited the more mature, organic sound of "Story" for its airplay success. In addition to Lorde, the week's other new Hot 100 top 10 belongs to British alt/rock band Bastille, whose introductory hit "Pompeii" advances 12-10. "Pompeii" rises 17-16 on Radio Songs (58 million, up 4%) and 21-19 on Streaming Songs (2.6 million, up 3%), while gaining by 4% despite slipping 9-10 on Digital Songs. Having topped Alternative Songs for four weeks beginning in October, the track is the eighth debut Alternative Songs hit for an act that led the ranking and crossed to the Hot 100's top 10 since 2011, following hits by Foster the People ("Pumped Up Kicks"), Gotye ("Somebody That I Used to Know"), fun. ("We Are Young"), Alex Clare ("Too Close"), the Lumineers ("Ho Hey"), Capital Cities ("Safe and Sound") and Lorde ("Royals"). Before the influx, no act's debut Alternative Songs entry had topped Alternative Songs and reached the Hot 100's top 10 since 2003, when Evanescence's "Bring Me to Life" (featuring Paul McCoy) ruled Alternative Songs for two weeks and rose to No. 5 on the Hot 100. Just outside the Hot 100's top 10, Beyonce's "Drunk in Love," featuring Jay Z, pushes 16-12 and becomes her first No. 1 on Streaming Songs (2-1; 5.5 million, down 1%). Meanwhile, Shakira scores her highest Hot 100 debut, as "Can't Remember to Forget You," featuring Rihanna, is the chart's top new entry at No. 28; the arrival bests the No. 34 start of Shakira's "She Wolf" in 2009. The new duet roars onto Digital Songs at No. 16 (82,000) and Streaming Songs at No. 27 (2.1 million). As previously reported, it enters the Pop Songs radio airplay chart at No. 31. Visit Billboard.com tomorrow (Jan. 23), when all rankings, including the Hot 100 in its entirety and Digital Songs, Radio Songs, Streaming Songs and On-Demand Songs, will refresh, as they do each Thursday. The latest charts will also appear in the next issue of Billboard magazine (on sale on Friday, Jan. 24).
