That's exactly what it is. Billboard only counts the year that the song first peaked. If it peaks at #1 in say December, but stays at #1 until January, only the December peak date is counted. Wellllllllll, not always…Billboard has said in the past that Mariah Carey is the only artist to have a number one single in each year of a decade (the 90s). But that only works if you count "Hero" for 1994, even though it reached number one the final week of 1993. They don't specify "spent time at number one during each year of a decade". That's always irked me, just as much as it irks me that Mariah missed that unique milestone by one week. I knew somebody was going to bring this up. LOL! Technically, Mariah didn't have a #1 for 1994 because "Hero" peaked at #1 the last week of 1993. But as you said, Billboard seems to make an exception here, so I guess they can be "flexible" on the issue depending on what they want to promote about an artist's chart achievements.

Like Rihanna, Bruno Mars has a #1 hit for 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013. If they both join Katy Perry in having a #1 in 2014, then all three of them will be halfway to achieving the milestone that Mariah so barely (and so technically) missed.

music.yahoo.com/blogs/music-news/chart-watch-katy-perry-ties-rihanna-record-221346025.htmlChart Watch: Katy Perry Ties Rihanna’s Record Katy Perry this week pulls into a tie with Rihanna as the artist with the most #1 hits on the Hot 100 in this decade. Both have had eight chart-toppers since January 2010. Perry moves up from #2 to #1 with "Dark Horse" (featuring Juicy J), which she performed on the Grammys on Sunday. (In case you're wondering, Bruno Mars is next in line, with five #1 hits in this decade. He's followed by Adele, Eminem and Ke$ha, who are tied with three #1 hits each in this period.) Here's another indication that Perry and Rihanna are the top contemporary hit-makers. Rihanna's "Stay" (featuring Mikky Ekko) tops the 4 million mark in digital sales this week. It's Rihanna's sixth song to reach that plateau, a total topped by only one artist in digital history—Perry, who has topped the 4M mark with seven singles. Of course, there's another method you use to determine that these two women are the top artists in pop music. It's not very scientific, but it works really well. You could turn on the radio. "Dark Horse" is Perry's ninth #1 hit overall. (She first reached #1 with "I Kissed A Girl" in July 2008.) Only five other female solo artists in chart history have amassed nine or more #1 hits. Mariah Carey leads the pack with 18, followed by Rihanna (13), Madonna (12), Whitney Houston (11) and Janet Jackson (10). "Dark Horse" is the second #1 from Perry's current album, "PRISM." You'll remember that Perry pulled five #1 hits from her previous album, "Teenage Dream." Perry is the fifth female solo artist to amass two or more #1 hits from back-to-back studio albums. She follows Carey, Houston, Jackson and Paula Abdul. "Dark Horse" is Perry's third collaboration with a hip-hip star to reach #1. She also topped the chart with "California Gurls" (featuring Snoop Dogg) and "E.T." (featuring Kanye West). . Juicy J's highest-charting hit before this was came as a featured artist on Mike WiLL Made-It's "23," which reached #11 in October. Juicy J's biggest claim to fame in March 2006 when he won an Oscar for Original Song for "It's Hard Out Here For A Pimp." It was the second rap song to win an Oscar (following Eminem's "Lose Yourself"). Juicy J co-wrote the song with DJ Paul, a fellow member of Three 6 Mafia, and Cedric Coleman. "Dark Horse" this week becomes the first song to sell 1M copies in 2014. It's also the third consecutive #1 that is a male/female collabo. It follows "The Monster" by Eminem featuring Rihanna and "Timber" by Pitbull featuring Ke$ha. . "Dark Horse" may have been destined to hit #1. The title draws from the titles of two #1 hits from the 1970s: Cher's "Dark Lady" and America's "A Horse With No Name." One final note: "Dark Horse" gives a name-check to a serial killer ("She eat your heart out/Like Jeffrey Dahmer"). I hope this doesn't start a trend. "The Monster" by Eminem featuring Rihanna holds at #5 for the second week. It holds at #1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs for the 13th week. . Jason Derulo lands his fourth top 10 hit as "Talk Dirty" (featuring 2 Chainz) leaps from #15 to #6. This enables him to pull ahead of his girlfriend, Jordin Sparks, who has had three top 10 hits. "Talk Dirty" surpasses a song with similar title, Poison's "Talk Dirty To Me," which peaked at #9 in May 1987. Lorde has two songs in the top 10 for the second straight week. "Team" holds at #8 for the second week. "Royals" drops from #7 to #9. In addition, "Team" tops the 1 million mark in digital sales this week. "Royals" is up to 4,895,000. Here's a recap of this week's top 10 songs. The Top Five: "Dark Horse" by Katy Perry featuring Juicy J jumps from #2 to #1 in its 19th week on the chart. This is its fourth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #1 (294K)… "Timber" by Pitbull featuring Ke$ha dips from #1 to #2 in its 16th week on the chart. This is its 11th week in the top 10. This is its ninth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #11 (117K)…Lorde's "Team" holds at #8 for the second week in its 18th week on the chart. This is its second week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #8 (136K)… Lorde’s "Royals" drops from #7 to #9 in its 30th week on the chart. This is its 22nd week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #13 (102K)…Bastille's "Pompeii" holds at #10 for the second week in its 24th week on the chart. This is its second week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #6 (148K). One Direction's "Story Of My Life" drops from #9, ending a seven-week run in the top 10. . Three songs that are closing in on the top 10 are already listed in the top 10 on Hot Digital Songs. Aloe Blacc's "The Man," which was #17 on last week's Hot 100, is #4 on the digital sales chart (175K). Pharrell Williams' irresistable "Happy," which was #25 on the Hot 100, is #3 on the digital chart (188K). Idina Menzel's "Let It Go," which was #26 on the Hot 100, is #10 on digital (124K). Imagine Dragons' "Demons" tops the 3 million mark in digital sales. It's the band's second 3-million seller. "Radioactive" is up to 6,286,000. (The band is closing in on its third 3-million seller. "It's Time" is up to 2,986,000.) "We Own It" by 2 Chainz & Wiz Khalifa tops the 1 million mark in digital sales. To My Readers: I'll have a separate Chart Watch report on this week's key movers and debuts on the Hot 100 later today. I won't recap the top 10 in that second report. It will be fresh material.

are Dark Horse and Dope the only songs to ever be #1 on streaming without a music video? That's quite impressive! And the vibe for Dope died down quickly whereas Dark Horse is still gaining momentum and its points will skyrocket once an official music video is out! It's definitely getting at least 5 weeks I repeat AT LEAST (so quite possibly even more!) at #1 on the Hot 100! Very good for Katy Perry! :) Harlem Shake? No official music video, just millions of fan made ones.

Jane jacksons again was #1 the last week of dec I thought? Nope. "Hero" jumped 3-1 that week. For what it's worth, "Hero" hitting #1 in 1994 still works if you consider the December-November chart year that Billboard uses each year. The significance of that is open to question, but I'm just putting that out there.

It seems like some live performances do count (like Lady Gaga - Dope) and others don't (e.g. Miley's VMA performance). I wonder what the criteria is for a live performance to count for streams?

This makes "Dark Horse" the first song to reach #1 on the Hot 100 without an official music video and/or meme videos since the inception of the streaming addition in spring 2012, right?

Chart Watch: Two Oscar Song Nominees SoarWhen the Academy Awards are telecast on March 2, two of the nominated songs will have cracked the top 30 on the Hot100 for the first time since 1999. Pharrell Williams' irresistable "Happy" (from "Despicable Me 2") leaps from #25 to #11 in its fourth week. Idina Menzel's "Let It Go" (from "Frozen") jumps from #26 to #21 in its ninth week. The two Original Song nominees from 1999 that hit the top 30 were "Music Of My Heart," a #2 hit by *NSYNC and Gloria Estefan (from "Music Of The Heart"), and Phil Collins' #21 hit "You'll Be In My Heart" (from "Tarzan"). If "Let It Go" advances to the top 20, which seems extremely likely, this year will become the first time that two of the nominated songs will have cracked the top 20 since 1998, when Aerosmith's #1 smash "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" (from "Armageddon") and "When You Believe," a #15 hit by Whitney Houston & Mariah Carey (from "The Prince Of Egypt"), both scored. Of course, the Oscars are awarded to the songwriters, not the artists. Williams wrote "Happy." Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez co-wrote "Let It Go." Diane Warren wrote both "Music Of My Heart" and "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing." Collins wrote "You'll Be In My Heart." Stephen Schwartz wrote "When You Believe." "Happy" and "Let It Go" are already in the top 10 on Hot Digital Songs. "Happy" is #3 (188K). "Let It Go" is #10 (124K). The big news on this week's Hot 100 is that Katy Perry ties Rihanna for the most #1 hits by any artist in this decade. I covered that, and the rest of the top 10 action, in a Chart Watch blog that we posted earlier today. If you missed it, here's a link. This blog is a look at key movers and debuts below the top 10. Aloe Blacc's "The Man" jumps from #17 to #16 in its fifth week. Digital sales rank: #4 (175K)…Kid Ink lands his first top 20 hit as "Show Me" (featuring Chris Brown) jumps from #24 to #19 in its 12th week. Many songs that were performed on the Grammys make big jumps this week. Sara Bareilles' "Brave" jumps from #31 to #26 in its 33rd week, equaling its highest ranking to date. John Legend's "All Of Me" leaps from #49 to #27 in its 16th week. Imagine Dragons' "Radioactive" rebounds from #41 to #33 in its 74th (!) week. Luke Bryan's "Drink A Beer" dips from #34 to #35 in its 12th week. It's #1 on Hot Country Songs for the third straight week. Jason Aldean's "When She Says Baby" jumps from #52 to #43 in its ninth week. Eric Paslay's "Friday Night" jumps from #59 to #47 in its 15th week. "Paranoid" by Ty Dolla $ign featuring B.o.B jumps from #65 to #52 in its sixth week. This surpasses Black Sabbath's classic song of the same title, which peaked at #61 in 1970. Bruno Mars' "Young Girls" jumps from #68 to #54 in its fourth week. It's vying to become the fifth top 30 hit from "Unorthodox Jukebox," which won a Grammy as Best Pop Vocal Album in a mild upset over Justin Timberlake's "The 20/20 Experience - The Complete Experience." Rascal Flatts' "Rewind" leaps from #83 to #58 in its second week. Austin Mahone lands his highest-charting hit to date as "MMM Yeah" (featuring Pitbull) debuts at #60. (It's the week's top new entry.) The 17-year old budding heartthrob's "What About Love" peaked at #66. Both songs are from Mahone's first full-length album, "Junior Year," which is due this spring. The title of the new song echoes Hanson's "MMMBop," which hit #1 in 1997. Mahone is breaking just as reigning teen heartthrob Justin Bieber is going through a particularly rough patch. Will Mahone be able to steal his crown? Stay tuned. Blake Shelton's "Doin' What She Likes" leaps from #84 to #66 in its second week…Beyonce's "Partition" jumps from #86 to #73 in its third week. Thomas Rhett's "Get Me Some Of That" jumps from #90 to #79 in its third week. Somo's "Ride" jumps from #89 to #80 in its third week. Schoolboy Q's "Man Of The Year" is the week's second highest new entry at #81. It's from his third studio album, "Oxymoron," which is due Feb. 25. An earlier song from the album, "Collard Greens" (featuring Kendrick Lamar) re-enters the chart at #92, matching its highest ranking to date. "El Perdedor" by Enrique Iglesias featuring Marco Antonio Solis debuts at #85. It's Iglesias' fourth Spanish-language hit to make the Hot 100. All have featured fellow Latin performers. "Lloro por ti" featured Wisin & Yandel. "Cuando me Enamoro" featured Juan Luis Guerra. "Loco" featured Romeo Santos. Another song that was performed on the Grammys, Hunter Hayes' "Invisible," debuts at #88. The song is vying to become his third top 20 hit, following "Wanted" (#16) and "I Want Crazy" (#19). Trey Songz' "Nana" debuts at #91. The 1975's "Chocolate" debuts at #96. This is very fitting because in 1975, a song called "Chocolate Chip" (by Isaac Hayes) peaked at #92. "Chocolate" is the first Hot 100 hit from The 1975's eponymous debut album. Rico Love's "They Don't Know" debuts at #100. Reversal of Fortune: You may remember that "Get Lucky" by Daft Punk featuring Pharrell Williams peaked at #2, spending five weeks locked behind "Blurred Lines" by Robin Thicke featuring T.I. + Pharrell. Since "Blurred Lines" was among the singles that "Get Lucky" defeated for Record of the Year at the Grammys, I guess you could say this is a case of "turnabout is fair play." This is the third time in Grammy history that a #2 hit has defeated, in the Record of the Year category, the smash that kept it out of the #1 spot. Eric Clapton's "Tears In Heaven" won for 1992, defeating Vanessa Williams' "Save The Best For Last," which kept it at #2 for four straight weeks. Two years later, Sheryl Crow's "All I Wanna Do" won, defeating Boyz II Men's "I'll Make Love To You," which kept it at #2 for six straight weeks.

Don't get me wrong, I like radioactive. But I was hoping it wouldn't break the record. I feel like I'm Yours was and is a classic song, and that radioactive won't stand the test of time. But with thus new remix, I'm guessing 85 weeks, easily. Maybe a small chance at 100 (that would be cool to see).
On a side note, I really hope Sail fell out of the chart. That song doesn't really hit me at all as a classic song.
