5 Reasons For Pharrell To Be “Happy”

Pharrell Williams's "Happy" leaps from #8 to #2 in its sixth week on the Hot 100. It's Williams' third single to crack the top two in the past eight months, following a pair of mega-hits on which he was featured: Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" (which spent 12 weeks at #1) and Daft Punk's "Get Lucky" (which spent five weeks at #2).

Here are five reasons for Williams to be "Happy."

1. Williams will perform "Happy" on the Academy Awards on March 2. Williams wrote the song for the movie "Despicable Me 2," which was released last July. "Happy" is a finalist for Original Song.

2."Happy" is the first Oscar nominee for Original Song to make the top five on the Hot 100 since Eminem's "Lose Yourself," which logged 12 weeks at #1 in 2002-2003.

3. "Happy" is receiving additional exposure in Beats by Dre TV ads and as part of Fiat's new global ad campaign.

4. "Happy" is the highest-charting of the eight Hot 100 hits with that title. It surpasses Ashanti's "Happy," which reached #8 in 2002, as well as same-titled songs by Surface (#20 in 1987), the Rolling Stones (#22 in 1972) and Leona Lewis (#31 in 2009).

5. "Happy" jumps to #1 on this week's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. It's Williams' fifth #1 on that chart, following his own "Frontin'" (featuring Jay Z) and three hits on which he was featured: Snoop Dogg's "Drop It Like It's Hot," Ludacris's "Money Maker" and "Blurred Lines."

Despite its Hot 100 success, "Happy" may be an underdog to win the Oscar this year. It must contend with the juggernaut that is Disney's "Frozen." That may lead to a victory for its power ballad "Let It Go." (Idina Menzel's rendition of "Let It Go" has narrowly outsold "Happy"—at least as of this week. "Let It Go" tops the 1 million mark in digital sales this week. "Happy" will soar past that threshold next week. As of this week, it has sold 989K copies.)

"Happy" has the exuberant spirit of the Sylvers' "Boogie Fever," a #1 hit from May 1976. "Boogie Fever" was featured on the soundtrack to the first "Despicable Me" movie in 2010.


"Dark Horse" by Katy Perry featuring Juicy J holds at #1 for the third week. The song logs its fifth week at #1 on Hot Digital Songs (291K). It's the first song to top the digital sales chart for five weeks since Lorde's "Royals." It's the first to do it for five consecutive weeks since "Blurred Lines" by Robin Thicke featuring T.I. + Pharrell.

"Talk Dirty" by Jason Derulo featuring 2 Chainz jumps from #4 to #3. The song tops the 1 million mark in digital sales this week. It's Derulo's seventh million-seller.


"Say Something" by A Great Big World & Christina Aguilera rebounds from #7 to #4, matching its highest ranking to date. It becomes the third song to sell 1 million copies in 2014. It follows "Dark Horse" by Katy Perry featuring Juicy J and "Timber" by Pitbull featuring Ke$ha.

Passenger's "Let Her Go" jumps from #6 to #5. The song tops the 3 million mark in digital sales this week.

"Drunk In Love" by Beyonce featuring Jay Z, which vaulted from #13 to #2 last week, drops all the way down to #8. Unless it reverses course, it will go down as a rare #2 hit that logged just a single week in the top five.

The Second Five: "Timber" by Pitbull featuring Ke$ha drops from #3 to #6 in its 18th week on the chart. This is its 13th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #8 (130K) … OneRepublic's "Counting Stars" drops from #5 to #7 in its 34th week on the chart. This is its 16th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #12 (107K)…"Drunk In Love" by Beyonce featuring Jay Z drops from #2 to #8 in its eighth week on the chart. This is its second week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #13 (98K)… Lorde's "Team" rebounds from #10 to #9 in its 20th week on the chart. This is its fourth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #10 (113K)…. Bastille's "Pompeii" rebounds from #11 to #10 in its 26th week on the chart. This is its third week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #7 (131K).

Lorde’s "Royals" drops from #9 out of the top 10, ending a 23-week run in the top 10. The song has sold 5,109,000 copies.

Two other songs that are listed in the top 10 on Hot Digital Songs may move up this week. They are Aloe Blacc's "The Man," which ranked #21 on last week' Hot 100, and Idina Menzel's "Let It Go," which ranked #24.

"The Monster" by Eminem featuring Rihanna tops the 3 million mark in digital sales in its 15th week. The superstars' previous collabo, "Love The Way You Lie," took just 11 weeks to reach the 3 million mark.

Imagine Dragons's "It's Time" tops the 3 million mark in digital sales this week. The band is the first act with three songs at or above the 3 million level on Nielsen SoundScan's list of the best-selling rock songs in digital history. "Radioactive" is up to 6,567,000. "Demons" is up to 3,154,000.

Fall Out Boy's "My Songs Know What You Did (In The Dark)" tops the 3 million mark in digital sales. It's the band's first hit to reach that level, though three of its other songs have come fairly close: "Sugar, We're Goin' Down" (2,639,000), "Thnks Fr Th Mmrs" (2,527,000) and "Dance, Dance" (2,226,000).

Chart Watch: "Radioactive" Sets Hot 100 Record

Imagine Dragons' "Radioactive" logs its 76th week on the Hot 100, which puts it in a tie with Jason Mraz's 2008 smash "I'm Yours" for the longest chart run since the Hot 100 was introduced in August 1958. "Radioactive," which climbed as high as #3, drops from #13 to #23 this week.

As you probably know, chart runs are getting longer. Five songs on this week's Hot 100 have been listed for 40 or more weeks. Trailing "Radioactive" are AWOLNATION's "Sail" (bulleted at #41 in its 75th week), "Blurred Lines" by Robin Thicke featuring T.I. + Pharrell (#39 in its 43rd week), Imagine Dragons' "Demons" (#16 in its 42nd week) and Capital Cities' "Safe And Sound" (#43 in its 41st week).

It wasn't always like this. For nearly 20 years after the introduction of the Hot 100, no songs spent 40 or more weeks on the chart. The first to do so was Paul Davis' "I Go Crazy," which achieved the feat in May 1978.

The big news on this week's Hot 100 is that Pharrell Williams's "Happy" leaps from #8 to #2. I covered that, and the rest of the top 10 action, in a Chart Watch blog that we posted earlier today. If you missed it, here's a link. This blog is a look at key movers and debuts below the top 10.

Aloe Blacc's "The Man" rebounds from #21 to #17 in its seventh week. The song has climbed as high as #16. The song features the "you can tell everybody" hook from Elton John's breakthrough hit, "Your Song." Digital sales rank: #9 (125K)... Idina Menzel's "Let It Go" from "Frozen" jumps from #24 to #18 in its 11th week. Menzel will perform the song on the Oscars on March 2. Digital sales rank: #6 (138K).

American Authors' "Best Day Of My Life" jumps from #34 to #26 in its 13th week... Avicii's "Hey Brother" jumps from #37 to #30 in its 10th week.

Luke Bryan's "Drink A Beer" jumps from #35 to #32 in its 14th week. The song logs its fifth week at #1 on Hot Country Songs. That's the longest run for a beer song since "Beer For My Horses" by Toby Keith with Willie Nelson had six weeks on top in 2003. Two other beer songs have made #1 since then: Kenny Chesney's "Beer In Mexico" (three weeks on top in 2007) and Billy Currington's "Pretty Good At Drinkin' Beer" (one week in 2010).

"Paranoid" by Ty Dolla $ign featuring B.o.B jumps from #51 to #42 in its eighth week... Demi Lovato's "Neon Lights" leaps from #64 to #46 in its seventh week... Brantley Gilbert's "Bottoms Up" jumps from #58 to #48 in its eighth week.

Eric Church's "Give Me Back My Hometown" jumps from #61 to #52 in its fifth week. Church's "The Outsiders" will enter The Billboard 200 at #1 next week with sales in the 280K range. That would be the biggest one-week sales for a country album since Luke Bryan's "Crash My Party" started with sales of 528K in August.

The Fray's "Love Don't Die" leaps from #81 to #60 in its sixth week... Frankie Ballard's "Helluva Life" jumps from #72 to #61 in its 10th week. Ballard's "Sunshine & Whiskey" is also expected to make a solid debut on The Billboard 200 next week... Scotty McCreery's "See You Tonight" jumps from #71 to #62 in its 11th week.

"Loyal" by Chris Brown featuring Lil Wayne & French Montana or Too $hort jumps from #80 to #63 in its fourth week... "Take Me Home" by Cash Cash featuring Bebe Rexha jumps from #79 to #67 in its fourth week... Dan + Shay's "19 You + Me" jumps from #85 to #72 in its sixth week... Randy Houser's "Goodnight Kiss" jumps from #83 to #74 in its fifth week... Thompson Square's "Everything I Shouldn't Be Thinking About" jumps from #88 to #77 in its fourth week.

Trey Songz's "Na Na" jumps from #95 to #80 in its third week... Danielle Bradbery's "The Heart Of Dixie" jumps from #91 to #81 in its 10th week. The song has climbed as high as #58... Rico Love's "They Don't Know" jumps from #97 to #85 in its third week.

Jhene Aiko's "The Worst" is the week's top new entry at #87. It's from Aiko's EP "Sail Out," which made the top 10 last fall. This is Aiko's first Hot 100 hit as a lead artist, though she was featured on two Hot 100 hits last year: Big Sean's "Beware" (#38) and Drake's "From Time" (#67).

Christina Perri's ""Human" is the week's second highest new entry at #90. It's from Perri's second studio album, "Head Or Heart," which is due April 1... The 1975's "Chocolate" re-enters the chart at #91... Hillsong United's "Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)" re-enters the chart at #94... Brett Eldredge's "Beat Of The Music" debuts at #97. It's the second Hot 100 hit from Eldredge's debut album, "Bring You Back." The first, "Don't Ya," reached #30.

i think if pop fans like her songs there will be more of an even mix - some will be inclined to buy the whole album and some will buy the singles. the issue however is getting to those pop fans, and this is a genre where the actual execution requires as much work as the planning. i definitely agree there are people who can sell both singles and albums in the multiplatinum range, but when you pull out those examples, there is almost always that key factor of at least a chr hit, the one thing Bey is currently lacking. this makes the argument as to why DIL is underperforming a little frustrating on both sides b/c Bey's an urban based artist with a pop level celebrity profile. i feel like sometimes it's hard to distinguish where to draw the line...pop fans here are constantly measuring her on a scale that our urban fans believe doesn't really apply, b/c it's debatable as to how many people are actually hearing her music.

jasont- SoundScan tracks sales, not airplay or streams. Broadcast Data Systems (BDS) is the tracker for airplay- though, I'm not sure if the streaming info goes directly to Billboard or if it's reported to BDS. Anyone know?

That will make me and others less likely to purchase in the future. I notice that the less the artist cares... the less the fans care eventually... People aren't going to keep buying your stuff. You have to sell it to them.

Yeah, I can't say I disagree with that, really. Like, urban listeners won't have this issue b/c she seems totally committed to them, so I don't think she will run into this problem with them. But whatever pop fans she is pulling in right now might eventually check out on her, even if she continues doing the big events like the Grammys, AMAs, etc. I guess the question is, how many of her album sales are comprised of pop fans (not all of that nearly 2 million is coming from urban, I'm sure). I'd like to think most of her fans are either urban leaning or just like her so much that it doesn't matter, but I really don't know the answer to that one.

Beyoncé spent an entire year doing promo, which created hype and built her brand even further. She may not be doing heavy traditional promo at the moment, but to say she "doesn't care"? She's one of the hardest working acts out there today.

It will debut next week. This week, it only had the movie's opening weekend factored into its sales, which was just enough to get it to #4 on the Bubbling Under. It will have a full week of sales this week, and with the hype the movie is still getting, it will definitely debut. It's still top 20 on iTunes 8 days after the film's initial release.

According to Billboard: "At No. 6 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, Aloe Blacc's "The Man" opens with Hot Shot Debut honors. The second single off his 'Wake Me Up' EP was activated to coincide with its No. 47 opening on the Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop airplay chart."

So it debuts on the R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart in its seventh week on the Hot 100. Is this the first time Billboard has done this for a song on one of its genre charts?
