Riddle me this lambs (especially those who stan for YM (E): why is it that Mariah sounds positively tenuous at best (gormless, at worst) delivering a vocal performance that is so firmly planted in her comfort zone as an artist, while on The Art of Letting Go, she runs the full spectrum of her abilities? Say what you want about the latter song, but it highlights everything that is right with Mariah as a vocalist, which has been no easy feat as of late. I will take a meandering set of lyrics and unfocused melody ANY DAY over non-committed, non-threatening, and safe. YM (E) is barely a small feat for a strong technical singer. TAOLG is a veritable master class, especially in comparison to YM (E). I shouldn't be surprised I feel this way, seeing how I Wish You Well is one of my favorite Mariah songs of all time. When I hear TAOLG, I hear the mark of a true artist: sublime instrumentation (I'm a sucker for strings), true emotion, and warmth. In contrast, when I hear YM (E), I hear an artist who is seriously struggling to maintain a foothold in pop relevance. Frankly, I am not here for that. I expect artistry from Mariah. She has earned that right, as an established force in the music industry. I love the woman with all of my being, but if this album is full of YMs, and not #Bs and TAOLGs, it will be very hard for me to mask my disappointment. Really good post! I agree with you totally. Since I'm not an expert in Mariah, but really loved TAOLG (my first one in years years years), I will really have to check out I Wish You Well.

I don't think anyone's issue was with the vocals on TAOLG. If I recall, the lyrics were the issue. I don't think anyone would have had a negative thing to say about that song if she had focused and simplified the lyrics in key places to make it flow better. I actually liked the production, and her vocals are top notch on that song, but lyrically it feels like it is a struggle for her to get it all out. The interesting thing is both YM and TAOLG are produced by Rodney, and they both have missteps with them. TAOLG is too wordy, and YM is way too basic vocally, lyrically and the production is monotonous.

"Dedication" will be on the album. Confirmed it's the collar with Nas and produced by Hit Boy! :)
edit: My computer rightfully autocorrected collab.

Yepp. :) If I'm correct, I believe "Dedication" was first mentioned by someone (probably JD) like a year ago, but the Hit Boy and Nas attachments were just confirmed yesterday. I'm really optimistic about "Thirsty". For some reason, I'm getting "Migrate" teas from that title, and not because they're both two syllabled one worded titles.

But she outdid herself with 'Heartbreaker' later. FOUR versions and they all fit like gloves. #genius :'( + "I Still Believe" :'( That whole CD gives me LIFE. :'( I love the darkness vibe of the Stevie J remix. I even prefer it over the Pure Imagination one. The Kings mix is HOT!

Totally agreed, though I do love the Pure Imagination more. Both are dope though! I own both versions of the CD Single, and also own the vinyl with ALL the remixes. The vinyl is gorgeous. It opens up like a picture book, and the album art is so gorgeous, definitely some of my favorite ever.

Wow.... it's like there's zero buzz behind this project. No recent news from Mariah or her team? Plans for the next single? Filming a video? Interviews? Maybe they're keeping everything for April.... Even here the conversations keeps going back to OLD old old singles... that tells how much there is to talk about this current project.

I'm really excited for this and all the lil mysteries that await us on this new album. It's the album with the most mystery behind it due to lack of news/info. The music is always the least of my concerns when it comes to Mimi its always the production but have a feeling HIT BOY is going to elevate that.

I agree with this as well. #B and TAOLG and even AH are much better to me than YM. It was a decent track, but I was bored after a few listen. Having said that, I'm still excited about the album. All the songs that she released in the past two years are all different, and I love most of them, so I still have hope for this project.

From B.Scott's Facebook page: Mariah Carey Sings Happy Birthday to B. Scott [From the Shower]I woke up to the most touching surprise which totally made me cry this morning from My Mimi, Mariah Carey. She sang me a birthday moment in a way that only the legendary Mariah Carey could. She wrote: "Happy belated B. Scott day ! 4 days late..as you still celebrate ! Just for laughs..I multitask!???? No.. I didn't forget.. I'm just in between songs finishing (the) album! Xoxo !!!!!!" Thank you my dearest heart, My Mimi for making this birthday truly memorable! I love you so much, xoxo! — with Mariah Carey.

I like E=MC^2 and Memoirs both. E=MC^2 had much better and obvious single choices, but Memoirs was a more cohesive work. My only knock on Memoirs is how one note it is. Individually the songs are amazing, but together it sounds like one long ass song with an occasional change in the production here and there.

Memoirs is her second worst album ever after Charmbracelet.
Its cohesiveness is what made it BORINGGGG with the exception of Obsessed. Horrible CD

I actually think Memoirs features some of her best writing. Her vocals were nice on that album as well.

Memoirs may have been an R&B album, but it was a bad R&B album.

It isn't a bad album, but it's boring, which is even worse. Yeah, "dull" and "uninspired" are characteristics of a bad album to me. I haven't touched it in years, but off the top of my head, "Obsessed" was great, "HATEU" was nice, and then...flatline, to say nothing of the dreadful "I Wanna Know What Love Is."

What a wonderful world we live in to be entitled to opinions. I am of the opinion that Memoirs is the only album of Mariah's I can play without wanting to skip one song.

E=MC2 is my favorite post Butterfly Mariah album. The hooks were there (Side Effects, Migrate, Touch My Body and Last Kiss are all great). I really like Memoirs though (Ribbon and The Impossible along with Obsessed are great).

I don't see Memoirs as boring; "Ribbon", "Standing O", "It's a Wrap", "Obsessed" and "Up Out My Face" are all fun and not in the same vein as the other songs. Yeah the rest of the songs can be "lumped" together but I think they all have their own identities.
