I've definitely come to enjoy Memoirs more as time as gone on. While I'd agree that it doesn't necessarily have any "radio-accessible" stand-out gems, I think it does have some beautiful songs that stand up in Mariah's catalogue. Candy Bling remains my favorite, but it's Inseparable that has crept up on me as a top song from that album. That line "one of us just gotta pick the phone up" I LOVE.
I also love The Impossible (and The Reprise), It's A Wrap, More Than Just Friends, Languishing, and Angels Cry. Betcha Gon' Know could have been my favorite and I really love up until around 1:35 in the song. I hate those "hey, hey, hey" things she puts in the background- that is a dated sound. And HATE U could have been amazing with better vocals.
It's still my 2nd least listened to album (ahead of Charmbracelet), but I'd still rather listen to it than most other artist's albums.

But let's talk about "Betcha Gon' Know". One of her best songs lyrically. I love the first half of "Betcha Gon Know," but it falls apart around the time she starts mentioning "Rae Rae." If it had kept going in the lane of the first verse and chorus, it would be among my favorite things she's done. But the awkward mentions of her friends (though I know the intent was to be descriptive) and especially that terrible "for real, for real" section bring the song down for me. But I do love the 1st verse, and especially how Mariah delivers lines like "Laughing out of anger but it don't strike me as funny." Actually, as I listen again, the only real issue I have with the song is the "for real, for real" part of the bridge. It's just tacky. I also wish the ending returned to the chorus. I don't think YM cracked the top 50 on Digital Songs It debuted at #32 or thereabouts. It debuted at #88 on the Hot 100, primarily off downloads, no? |

Maybe she was completely done with recording. Doesn't mean all the tracks are actually finished. Supposedly she wasn't (and may still not be) done recording, but I doubt it's new songs at this point. Probably just obsessing over the vocal tracks. |
