Now, don't be catty. I'm trying to defend you but if you are going to turn into an entitled slw84 type, wreaking your own special, personalized brand of merry havok across the board and gloating in the fact that it's a message board and you aren't actually breaking any rules then...#fuhgeddaboutit. It can't really be THAT hard to resist the temptation to respond with the "it's no secret that female acts will never reach their glory days again once they hit 40" every time someone talks about Mariah getting a #1, can it?? Anyway, remember: Mariah is the QUEEN of #1s. Did anyone EVER imagine when she started that she would surpass ELVIS or have the MOST #1s OF ANY SOLO ACT? I highly doubt it. So, forgive people if they are going to always want her to reach those goals, "unrealistic" or not. How about you try a new tactic? Put the talks of ageism to bed and root for her to do the impossible. If you can manage that, maybe I will love you like a Freeze Pop, Duncan Hines Yellow Cake, and O(verloaded)B(reast). This is ridiculous. Mariah Carey is an old hag. I'm so sick of these fangirls who can't take it when someone reminds them that Mariah is past her prime. #Beautiful would have certainly touched more fans had Mariah Carey been 20 years younger. You people are out of your mind when you ignore the obvious. Personally I can't stand Mariah Carey but it has nothing to do with her age. I think she makes terrible music, has messy management, and acts like a stripper to get attention. Another thing I can't stand about her is that she hasn't kept her figure. I hate when rich famous people can't keep their weight down when they have the money to hire a 24hr trainer and nutritionist to make sure that they are taking care of their body. Mariah Carey used to be slender. Look at how thin she was in the early 00s. Now she's just a fat bitch. I hate her guts.

How is this guy still posting here? He was reported before. Where are the mods? We're always here. We're currently reviewing the matter, and I ask that everyone continue to discuss Mariah Carey's music, disregarding that post. For reference, our warning system has six levels. As you can see from the quote below, posters only receive suspensions after repeated warnings. I cannot discuss specifics about members, but this may explain why you see members continue to post after they have been reported. As the moderator of this subforum, I would like to reiterate that my inbox is always open should any of you ever have any concerns. 7. Warning/Suspension System. Warnings and suspensions will be determined by collective staff discussion and discussion (except in rare cases where immediate action is required due to a ProBoards Terms of Service violation). All staff discussion will include consideration of poster history (including the poster's track record of past warnings), the context of reported posts (including any relationship the poster may or may not have with fellow posters quoted or addressed in reported posts), and the intent of the poster. The warning system works as follows: - 1st warning: No suspension
- 2nd warning: No suspension
- 3rd warning: 7-day suspension
- 4th warning: No suspension
- 5th warning: 14-day suspension
- 6th warning: Permanent loss of posting privileges

I just really don't get what people like him get out of posting stuff like that here. It doesn't make us dislike Mariah, nor does it change anything. So, what was his intent?

My theory on ageism. I dont think the actual age of a person matters, more-so how long they have been in the music industry. (Note JLO had a number 1 in her 40's, maybe because she started at like 29). But I think once you start to hit the 20 years making music mark (no matter how old you are) you are then generally seen as kind of old or out dated and people loose interest and think your time has passed.

What #1 did Jennifer Lopez have in her 40s?! If you're thinking the song I think you are, it never hit #1 on the Hot 100.

Yes, that is true, too, about number of years as a hitmaker. (However, as noted, Lopez did not have a No. 1 on the Hot 100 in her 40s.)
Based on Mimi's comment about hearing songs and not getting the whole story, there well may not be a single before May 6. I'd be surprised if the label went along with that, though, as this is not a comparable situation to when Beyonce dropped her album out of thin air.

They will have another single out before the album. I doubt even she would release an album without something to lift it off the ground.

Ooops yeah just looked on wiki, ok but it hit no.1 like everywhere else and was still a big hit in the US.

The length of time on the scene does make a difference in how someone is perceived. Mariah has been making records since 1990. That was 24 years ago. She's seen as old school by a certain portion of the record buying audience. It's not just the length of time though. It has a lot to do with how our society objectifies younger women and tends to discard women when they reach a certain age, like 40. Mariah is now 44 or 45 years old. It's not impossible for her to have big hits but she has to be marketed correctly. Right now she markets herself as if she's still a young sexy woman. It's the wrong approach for Mariah.

It's not age or tenure in the industry-- it's a combination. The likelihood of an act breaking through in their 30s (like Tamar Braxton) and going on to have a multi-decade hit-making career at that age is just as unlikely. Jennifer Lopez had one big hit in her 40s, not so long after Mariah had a big hit with "Obsessed". So far, "You're Mine" has actually done better than Jennifer's current single. So I don't think Jennifer is necessarily in a better place with radio right now than Mariah.

Yes, a combo indeed.
That "Papi" track hit a higher Hot 100 peak, but it has fared worse at radio than YM. Some will point out that there was no official radio-impact date for the Lopez track, but she released a video (streaming was a primary factor in its Hot 100 entry) and performed it on American Idol, and it still didn't ignite much interest.

An older artist really has no chance if the music isn't even that good. I have not been impressed with JLO's recent output either. But JLO is 45 years old so having chart success is an uphill battle just as much as it is for Mariah Carey.

I just think their strategy of keeping the album secret is beyond stupidity... Because the album will drop on May 6th, there will be a days worth of frenzy and then on May 7th the album will start sailing away into the oblivion.. Like it never happened. #sodissappointed

Like it never happened. #sodissappointed This album era is a complete mess. I am confident that this album will be a flop. The singles she has released have ranged from mediocre to terrible. She is also making an album that has a sound from the early 00s. You're Mine, the Art of Letting Go, Triumphant Get Em were all dated tracks. I hope none of them make the album but they probably will. The promotion for the album is terrible. The songs she's released came out so long ago. Since "You're Mine" flopped hard, Mariah's had time to put out another single and she has not done so. It's mid April and there's no new single. This album has about zero buzz. If it hits May 6th, it will be over by the next week. I'll give her more than one day of frenzy but whatever excitement there is will be short lived.

An older artist (male or female) will always have a hard time having hits with poor/subpar single material since people will always compare their new releases with what they used to put it out in the past. Acts like Katy Perry or Rihanna as of now can get away with that since they are still young and fresh in the eyes of the music business. I believe Mariah will always fare better than JLO at radio 'cause she's far more music/vocally talented, and she appeals to a broader demographics (YM was a big fat flop but it hit TOP 40 in five or six radio formats!) But JLO on the other hand is far more interesting as a performer and even tho being 44 years old she still looks young, so I believe their shots at having hits are even, both will struggle.

"In the 1990s and early 2000s, Carey scored a lot of number one hits by releasing her singles for 49 or 99 cents, while other singles sold for at least $2.49." Um, what? The only #1 she had in the early 00s was "TGIFY." I've never heard a report of any of her #1s being on sale for 49 cents, and it's a lie that other competitive singles were selling for $2.49 at the same time. "Her worldwide record sales seem to increase by 20 million every month" Again...what? She's used the same 200 million figure for years now. Wow. Who is that nut job?

I don't think Mariah's age had anything to do with #Beautiful and what it did or didn't do. I actually think it under performed. I think it should have easily been at least a top 10 hit for her. She ruined any forward momentum of that song with a terrible video and bad performances of the songs. Again with streaming counting, Mariah failed to realize the importance of creating a decent music video. If the song is good and people are feeling it, the song will transcend age. I think a lot of people, even Mariah, discount the good will that that song did for her. I mean I have friends who actually detest Mariah (aside from AIWFCIY) who loved Beautiful. It put her on so many people's radar who had up until that point made her an after thought, and she goes and ruins it with ill conceived follow ups and delays. I'm sorry, but age absolutely is a factor with female recording artists these days. Can you think of any female artists over 40 who have had a major top ten hit in the past few years? (The only one person that comes to mind is J. Lo with On the Floor). Madonna had 4 minutes 5 years ago at the age of 50. Song sold 3 million and was a big worldwide hit

Idina Menzel is 42 and killing it with Let It Go right now. Even though it's from a kids soundtrack she is the one being credited.
