While YDKWTD is a catchy, throwback, feel good song (and one of her best songs in a while obviously esp. after the last several lackluster/ under performing releases) I don't think it's a strong, single/pop radio friendly material. Really like the beat (basically I'm That Chicks 1st cousin) but the melody while catchy gets too repetitive and I can see it having a fast burn out rate. On Urban and def. Urban AC this has a shot, but not pop. She's put out or had other similar 'throwback/retro' sounding songs even on her recent albums. Yes, there have been retro songs that smashed in the past year but they had a contemporary pop radio friendly sound. This is pure '70s r&b disco. Even w/ that rap it doesn't make the overall sound of the song sound contemporary. I actually think Fantasy (even w/ its retro sound) would work better on pop today/19 years later! lol Again good song but looks like they're going to go all Beyonce when it comes to the 'official' single release(s) and possibly release numerous singles to different formats and see which one clicks and sticks w/ pop. What specific things make "Get Lucky" and "Treasure" more pop/radio friendly? Meanwhile, I love this bit from the "ABMB" rehearsal: http://instagram.com/p/oDmG9TCpjq She can still sing, folks.

YDKWTD is clearly the safer bet but I just want the album at this point. I gave up on radio success and hits after she failed to capitalize on #B.

It's not her emotional journey the past few years, but her musical journey. And to that end, it will end up being more like a journey of music itself the past 40 years:
"#Beautiful" - Motown combined with indie rock elements "Thirsty" - modern urban production and rhythmic hook combined with 90s melodies "You're Mine" - modern production elements filtered through a mid-00s urban ballad "YDKWTD" - Donna Summer disco jam with a modern rapper "TAOLG" - elements of doo wop, cinema, and even singer-songwriter

Love this song. It's the label pick for the next single. Doubt it will smash at radio if Whitney's "Million Dollar Bill" and JHud's "I Can't Describe" weren't big hits. She's had that disco diva inside her from day one. The Whitney and JHud singles preceded songs like "Get Lucky" and "Happy" blowing up at radio. The retro discopop/R&B sound is definitely more in now and Wale's addition adds additional encouragement for Urban and Rhythmic stations. Plus, JHud never made lasting inroads at radio outside of Urban AC and even though Mariah falls outside of radio's target audience today, she's still in a better position with both radio and the public than Whitney was at the time of "Million Dollar Bill." I agree that Mariah's disco tendencies have always been there (albeit on the back burner). "I'm That Chick" quickly comes to mind. However, I think the real reason it won't smash at radio is because of momentum. Had "You're Mine" never been released and either "Thirsy" or especially "You Don't Know..." taken its place, there would have been a much greater likelihood of another hit at least the same size as "#Beautiful." While musically there is no likeness, Mariah's radio strategy is beginning to remind me of Enrique Iglesias. They keep throwing songs out hoping that one will stick instead of rallying behind one good song. With each passing flop, there's less interest to the point that when a could-be hit finally gets released, it's too little too late. Agree. I also thought of Million Dollar Bill after hearing IDKWTD. Same kind of retro beats and catchy melodies. As much as IDKWTD is def. a good song and one of her most instant, hottest and catchiest in ages, look at what she's put radio through the past year lol. No, her situation isn't as dire as Whitney's was when she put out MDB, but she's a 44 year old woman who hasn't been marketable at all esp. after what happened with AI and all those under performing singles. We all know that U.S. radio is more ageist than ever now (esp. for females). That, mixed in the landscape and kind of songs dominating pop...just dunno. Not saying it won't somehow happen but its def. going to be harder now than it would've been at anytime in the 90s and 5-10 years ago. Yes, the retro disco/r&b sound is red hot now (compared to when MDB came out), but radio is all about politics and making money. Madonnas was 47 (just 3 years older than Mariah is now) when Hung Up came out and was one of the biggest worldwide hits of the last 10 years but barely cracked the top 10 in the U.S. and got lackluster airplay. However, iTunes was in its infancy when HU came out so most likely it would've peaked way higher today due to sales and video streaming. As good as the song is I'm 50/50 at best w/ how this will perform. I think it has a better shot w/ sales than radio.

Mariah Lights Up Today Plaza Mariah Carey is back! And she wants everyone to know it, based on the title of her new album: "Me. I Am Mariah ... The Elusive Chanteuse." And on Friday, fans found her on TODAY — lighting up the plaza with performances, then sitting down to chat about herself and "Me."
The title, she said, came from a self-portrait she did as a 3-year-old. Her mom saved the image all these years, and now it graces the back of the new album, which she says is a "cohesive body of work" from start to finish.
"What it really is, is from that little girl and who she was and all that it has taken to kind of feel like a complete person," she explained.
Being complete to Carey involves not just her career, but her devotion to family — including husband (and "America's Got Talent" host) Nick Cannon and their "dem babies," 3-year-old twins Monroe and Moroccan. She even got them to appear on a tune, "Supernatural," on the new record.
And Carey's a lucky mom. For the most part, the twins don't give her any trouble at all.
"The main thing is that they don't let me get enough sleep," she said. "That's the only thing, it's the truth. I would rather stay awake and watch their favorite movie ... and so we have to do that."
Earlier, Carey spread light across an otherwise gray day on the TODAY plaza, performing songs including "Touch My Body" and "You Don't Know What To Do" while wearing a slinky, sparkly black dress and a long black fingerless glove (she's still recovering from a dislocated shoulder injury from last July).
The singer will also light up another venue — the small screen — when she chats with TODAY's Matt Lauer in a special called "Me. I Am Mariah." In a short clip from that special, Carey and Cannon talked a little more about their home life, and it seems Cannon is as on board with domesticity as Carey.
"It truly is a family," said Cannon. "It doesn't matter what goes on outside of our household. As long as everything inside is tight and we enjoy it and embrace that union, and that foundation that we've built."
"Me. I Am Mariah... The Elusive Chanteuse" will be available May 23. "Me. I Am Mariah" on NBC airs on May 31 at 8 p.m.
hmmm. May 23rd, could that be the day they will start streaming the album on itunes?

The instrumentation of YDKWTD sounds so rich, this song in HQ may cause spontaneous and powerful eruptions all across the world! Life received! This album will probably be pretty much EVERYTHING.

Oh how amazing would it be if Walter Afanasieff was the co-producer of 'One More Try'. (How fitting).

I think the great thing with Mariah is that with a lot of other artists the songs that go out for previews to radio are just the single ready material and the rest of the album is filler; but with Mariah you just KNOW that the "non-singles" are gonna be some amazing album cuts that are too complex, Lordly and flawfree for the general public to grasp on to (I Wish You Well YAS!). I am just sooo ready for this album!

Some stuff I've found online this afternoon:
Perez Hilton: Mariah Carey, you slay us! We don't know what to do!
Fuse: The rest of the track is laced with funky guitar strums, brass horn blasts and a silky, repetitive hook. The song's best moment might be in the last 15 seconds when Mariah & Co. end the song with a powerful group vocal attack, "You don't know what you're doing to me! You don't know what you're doing to me! You don't know!"
Idolator: Her angelic voice sounds terrific here. And actually, the overall vibe seems more fitting than the modern-day club settings that she roams in “Thirsty”
MTV: What’s important is that “You Don’t Know What To Do” has the breezy, throwback bounce that we’ve come to expect from the singer. Like, it will fit into my “SUMMER OF MIMI” playlist so perfectly, right in between “Honey” and “Heartbreaker.”
Bustle (??): The song sounded like classic Mariah Carey, a mixture of sass and chastisement, a power anthem that invites you to dance around your room to it.
Cosmopolitan: Fans are LOSING it, calling her new upbeat track the song of the summer

I am loving "You Don't Know What To Do"! I was hoping there would be at least one song like this on the album. The R&B/Disco/Funk sound always goes well with Mariah's vocals. She sounds perfect. The sample from the Inner Life & Jocelyn Brown track works so well. I don't mind that Wale is on it, but I would love a solo version. I could see it doing well if made into a single. It is getting a good response already online and in the media. Might as well push it while the iron is hot. And it's just in time for summer.

Just watched the performances back on TV. LOVED THEM. She is sounding great! I'm half-convinced the climax of ABMB was live; which was impressive. The new song is definitely a grower; upon first listen I wasn't too into it, but I like it more now that I've played it back a couple of times. Overall, definitely a good show!

Loving the newest song! Very feel good and summery. Can't wait to hear it in high quality. Just watched the performances back on TV. LOVED THEM. She is sounding great! Unfortunately, the climax was not live. There's a fan video going around twitter and YouTube of the performance and when it gets to the belted climax, Mariah doesn't sing anything and all you hear is a strange squeak from her as the pre-recorded track plays for the TV viewers only. Same with the intro to the new song. I don't wanna post it here to damper the mood, but I too was hoping it was all completely live.....

Whatever the case is, it sounded good and Mariah lipped decently; because I can usually tell within seconds when she is/isn't lipping. The live parts sounded great, though, so at least what she has left of her voice is in good shape.

It was exactly the same as the one shown on TV, down to hear joking she doesn't know the words to her own song. But, the rest of the song was all live.

I was there this morning and that definitely did happen during the ABMB performance (although I personally chose to keep my video of that moment private...). If the intro to YDKWTD was mimed, the track played fine during the performance - it was during the rehearsal that just the backing singers took part in the intro

I don't suppose people are shocked or surprised, but I guess there is a difference between knowing that she is probably/definitely lip syncing and then painfully watching as she lips her way through silence because the track hasn't played.
Regardless of that, the general public have no idea it happened, the performances came off well on TV and her preorders have shot up - so job well done.
Either way I don't think Mariah was too bothered...I didn't quite catch what she said at the end of the performance but she made a statement along the lines of if anyone has a problem with the performance to take it up directly with her - she's contactable via twitter lol
