There isn't any real chance. The playlist description says it's for songs from 1940-1980. That playlist does seem to be a big reason "RATCT" (which is the first song on the playlist) and a few other songs end up passing "AIWFCIY" on Spotify during the season as it's a very popular playlist.

Mariah does have that Spotify performance thing this season, so I assume that's an effort on her team's part to get in their good graces. Having said that, in addition to placement on playlists, the other issue is one of the biggest Spotify playlists is a traditional/old holiday music one, and "AIWFCIY" is apparently too new to qualify (and "RATCT" is usually one of the first songs on it, if not the first). "AIWFCIY" is a classic, though, so surely by now it could fit the theme regardless. And yes, Billboard has long distinguished between active and passive streams, but if I'm not mistaken it has to do with the service (i.e. Spotify vs Pandora, paid subscription versus not, etc) than it does with whether or not you listen to a song because it's on a playlist.

Lastly, you can blame the most recent lawsuit on Walter's ego:

What are the numbers like on Merry Christmas inching closer to diamond? I've been making plans for a "Mariah has 3 diamond albums" party since the debut was certified 9x platinum in the late 90s and I can't hold on to these streamers and baloons much longer.

I thought I read that it scanned 10.3 million just a few weeks ago, so it looks like it's eligible? It's really the debut that's so close yet seems so far.I do hope it gets some sort of push for its 35th anniversary to help get it there.

Yeah as Positive Tension mentioned, some source on Twitter claims Merry Christmas is at 10.3 million. Tbh I don't buy that and don't think it's Diamond yet. As of late 2021 its Soundscan total was at 5.8 million per Billboard. It then has streaming/digital singles to add to that total (i.e. to make its SPS total), but as of now the certified singles from the album are at 14.5 million total (i.e. 1.45 million in album sales). Even if you give "AIWFCIY" 2-3 more million on its current cert and then add 2-3 million for other uncertified songs and such, that only gets it the equivalent of another 2 million in album sales and right around 8x platinum.

Another way to look at it is it was certified 8x platinum in 2020, which we know was pretty accurate since that was the year after its 6x platinum certification. Last holiday season it added no more than 350k total based on its weekly totals (it was averaging 45-55k in its peak weeks if I remember right). At that rate it would take at least 3 full years for it to add 1 million to its total. So, that would mean it would be around 9x platinum as of now.

I just don't see any way its at 10.3 million/Diamond and would love to know how that source came up with that total. I also have confirmation on that to the degree that Liron tweeted almost exactly 1 year ago that Merry Christmas wasn't eligible for Diamond status. If it was really at 10.3 million now, it would have been right around Diamond one year ago.

So, that's at least 3 talk show appearances, a BMA performance, and a fairly large holiday tour this season. I'm surprised they're hitting the promo so hard this year considering the 30th anniversary is next year.

A lot of this - particularly the Billboard award - seems to fit better for the anniversary IMO.
