New RIAA certs:Merry Christmas - 9x platinum “AIWFCIY “ - 14x platinum “O Holy Night” - 1x platinum “Hark! the Herald Angels Sing” - 1x platinum That makes 4 platinum songs from Merry Christmas. “SCICTT” has to be close too. Maybe Merry Christmas and the debut can be certified Diamond at the same time. That would be iconic. Surely Mariah has the highest certified holiday album by a woman. What does she have to get to to have the highest by any artist? I know it's not a ton of copies, but the AIWFCIY cassettes are sold out... and the song is back up to #4 on iTunes. The new video is around 271K views as of this morning.

Sometimes it feels like it'll never get to 10X. Considering "AIWFCIY" adds at least 2 million to its cert every year, that then also adds 200k minimum to Merry Christmas each year. You then add in the SPS for the other tracks as well as any actual sales of the full album (it sold about 5000 last week), and it should get to Diamond in the same 3 years it took to get from 8 to 9 million. The issue for the debut is none of the tracks have good streaming. It was certified 9 million in late 1999, and then the GH was released in 2001. I'm sure the GH cut any real need for casuals to buy the debut, and with it doing poorly in streaming it makes sense it's creeping toward Diamond. We need one of the tracks to go viral. colson I said that about them being certified together half-jokingly, but since Merry Christmas is a few years away the debut will at least be closer (even if minimally). My real hope is they release some of the demo tracks and tack them onto the debut, which would help. Maybe for the 35th anniversary? |

That's why I was surprised at your comment about maybe both MC and the debut reaching Diamond together. No one knows where the debut stands right now. My main issue with the debut are those club sales that weren't added or missing. Nothing anyone can do about it now but it almost feels like the debut is Diamond without officially reaching that mark. And I refuse to believe that it will be stuck at 9X for another 25 years. If there were a song to go viral from the debut, I'd hope it would be an unexpected song that most people aren't familiar with. |

Or rather than a Rarities 2, maybe for the debut tack on another vault song or two and some demo versions of the songs on the album to maybe show a different take on the songs for the 35th Anniversary.

RIAA does include club sales though. (EDIT: Does anyone know how many of the #MC30 vinyls were sold or pressed?)
Okay, so according to Ask Billboard in November 2018, Mariah Carey has sold 4.9 million in the Soundscan era. I copied the cert dates from RIAA below and it sold 4 million before Soundscan tracking began, for a total of 8.9 million. So the there's probably only like 100k-250k from music club sales. So with minimal SPS from digital and streaming, I can see how it's still a ways away from 10 million.

Thanks for providing this data, bat. Billboard started using Soundscan on May 25, 1991. By that date, it was certified 5x Platinum for shipping, but not necessarily selling, 5 million copies. It seems reasonable the album would have sold at least 4 million copies, maybe several hundred thousand more, once the 5x platinum certification arrived. Certifications don’t happen in real time either, so while it was certified 5x platinum on April 29, 1991, might it have been eligible a month or more before that date?

It's hard to know the discrepancy between the shipping totals and sales totals at that time because the debut was the #1 album in April of 1991 so there would have been a lot of copies available in stores in anticipation of demand (i.e. the shipping figure would be a fair amount higher than its sales total). As ryang said, Billboard started using Soundscan in May 1991, but it started tracking sales before then (March 1991) so I don't know if that 4.9 million total is from when Billboard started using it, or from when Soundscan first started. That's a potentially big question because that time frame is literally when the debut was at #1 so 1-2 months of sales data would be a huge total. Either way it had like like 30 weeks in the top 10 before Soundscan started (including the 1990 holiday season), so I think 3-4 million in sales pre-Soundscan is very likely. Keep in mind Liron tweeted relatively recently (about a year ago?) that neither the debut or Merry Christmas were near Diamond, so there's that too. If that 9 million cert in 1999 was basically right around when it hit 9 million, I can see where it hasn't 'sold' 1 million since then. Physical sales and even club sales for the debut wouldn't have been high in the past 25 years as the GH would have neutered them. Plus as I've said its streaming has been poor. On another topic, this is nice to see: I still hold out hope either Ariana or Kelly will have Mariah do a vocal arrangement on one of their songs. |

jenglisbe The Ask Billboard column looks all the way back to March 1991 when they report on Soundscan totals. I bet Sony paid for that cert at the end of February 1991 because they knew Soundscan was about to launch and it would help with continuity of sales totals.

They must have changed up some things depending on venues or evolutions on the tour, because not everything in that video is what I saw. It doesn't properly show the video screens while Roc & Roe and their little band are performing "Christmas Wrapping", that's a special treat. Yeah I'm guessing most of that footage would be from the November part of the tour. Some of it looks the LA shows in particular. That's definitely the date Nicole Richie attended and I imagine Miley as well. I went to the Pittsburgh show earlier this week and they were filming there. Were they filming in Cleveland as well? Definitely some different footage and outfits in the new video from what I saw this week. But they'll probably show more of what we saw in the mini-doc. {Spoiler}Hopefully that includes her duet moment with Ms Monroe! That was one of my personal highlights from the show <3 |
