I remember hearing this story similarly told years ago, so I don’t think he made it up.

The story was that Whitney went up to Mariah, Mariah basically ignored her, and when they made up during “When You Believe” Mariah told her that essentially Tommy was the reason she ignored her. He told Mariah either not to mingle with other people there that night or peers like Celine/Whitney/etc she needed to keep distance from (something along those lines).

Even during their promo-run for “When You Believe” I think Mariah spoke about it when an interviewer brought up the past rumors they didn’t like each other (the Oprah interview I think?). Mariah alluded it was misunderstandings. WYB was also directly after the divorce so it aligns with the idea becoming friends with Whitney was something she was newly able to do post-Tommy.

She also never really acknowledged names like Whitney as inspiration in her early interviews from my memory and it was probably tied to Tommy. She would always name Aretha and other acts that were generations way before her. Maybe the idea was Tommy just didn’t want any(more) comparisons to her contemporaries.

It was a little weird to me Mariah went as far as ignoring Whitney simply because Tommy said to, but I’m glad Whitney was pretty understanding and they moved forward.

Interesting. I remember some story of Mariah not acknowledging Whitney at a party or something, but in that story it seemed possible Mariah hadn't even seen Whitney or something. I hadn't heard this story, or at least not told in this way.

As for Mariah not acknowledging Whitney as an inspiration early on, that doesn't surprise me; we know Mariah was out hustling for record deals and such by 1988 at the latest. Whitney's debut album came out in 1985. Of course R&B artists from the 1970s and early 1980s were more of an inspiration to Mariah since that's when she was growing up. Whitney wouldn't have been someone who made Mariah want to sing since Mariah was already singing when Whitney came out.
