Mariah on Power 105: SHADE!!! Dear Mimi, remember when you and Cri$tyle pumped out E=MC2 in a year? Or when The-Dream presented you with half-written songs and along came Memoirs iin four months (not saying that was a good thing)? Remember that awesome Miguel demo Karen Kwak picked out for you, or how it took you three months to pen "Triumphant"? Remember "The Art of Letting Go" and that "complex" melody you crafted all by yourself? Some s**t went down, but lbr, it took her over three years to record thirteen songs and two covers.

I feel like she's doing all the diva things that people hate about her x100 lately. Like all musicians/actors posing for photos backstage at Jimmy last night, and Mariah was nowhere to be found. Now everyone is interpreting that comment to DJ Clue as BeyoncΓ© shade, a week after she claimed she hasn't heard BeyoncΓ©'s current mega-hit...

0 adds on the Urban formats is not good when you are someone who in particular has an affinity for Urban leaning material. The fact that she got more adds on Pop is very odd. She even has a remix with an Urban leaning artist and still got no adds very troubling. It says to me that the song was the wrong choice as a whole. well, Urban has not been supportive of her at all. Even back in 2009, it was rhythmic. #Beautiful also had a lot pop and Rhythmic support. I don't understand they don't support her anymore. They were all over her during TEOM. I think age plays more of a factor with Urban radio. As bad as "Triumphant" was by her standards, Meek Mill was huge, and Rick Ross's verse wasn't that bad. I honestly wonder how that song (and "Beautiful," to be honest) would have performed if she didn't receive top billing, or at least shared it. In terms of "Beautiful," being the only act that lip-synched at the BET Awards the day the very Urban-friendly version of the song dropped probably didn't help either, though. Hopefully the BET Honors performance will be dubbed with different vocals.

I thought Mariah and Beyonce were close, so if she was throwing shade at Beyonce, that's surprising.
If Mariah is having trouble writing lyrics and creating melodies, there is no shame in her scaling back and letting others have more influence. After the wonderful response to "#Beautiful," Mariah should've recorded a couple more songs with Miguel or at least modeled subsequent songs after it. I understand that she wants more credit as a writer (and she certainly deserves it), but if the end result isn't a good song, then someone should step in.

I totally agree. I feel like what she had with Miguel was exactly what she needed in terms of revitalizing her sound and writing. I feel like You're mine would have been the PERFECT follow up single to Touch My Body, but it's 2014 now. The melodies are there, but the sound and production just feel so dated and uninspired. Don't get me wrong, I love the record, but she's at a point where she really needs to reinvent her self musically (and her image as well, or at least back up her singing with some authentic, live performances) if she wants real success again. I think she would really benefit to have a label head that checks her and really seems invested in the project. It seems like Island are ready to just cut their losses and call it a day.
Random question, when was the last time Mariah went in on a performance and was completely live? I feel like that's what people miss from her and want to see more than anything else.

I feel like that's exactly what's going on. I'm already sensing this as a transitional album. She'll probably sign with a new label in the next year or so, and I don't see a label just signing her and letting her do whatever she wants (at least not the kind of label she's going to want to sign with). They'll probably make her churn out an album more quickly too (even if it means working with other writers), because they're not going to sign her and wait 5 years for an album.

I don't think it's Beyonce shade at all. She's literally always talking about how much she loves Bey. She's probably just referencing how singer/songwriter is pretty much what everyone is billed as these days even though I would say it's pretty rare to find a singer who is as involved in the construction of their music as Mariah.
It just seems really off that Mariah wouldn't even get some pity adds at urban. Are we sure it was sent for adds to day?

Yeah I agree sometimes we say something in a general sort of way without meaning anyone in particular but of course those who it applies to and those who feel it applies to them will take it all wrong. Beyonce aint the first or last bitch who put her name on stuff she didn't write she just happens to be the biggest thing in music so she gets the flak.

soblu- even if the urban impact date wasn't this week, the song was sent to radio a week ago, and no urban stations added it this week. The pop and rhythmic adds counts weren't great, but at least it was something.
Did anyone post this, courtesy of Mimi Daily?
Mariah Performs For Prizeo Contest Winner
Last night, Mariah performed a private concert at her New York home for Prizeo contest winner Lisa Thomas and her guest. Lisa was the grand prize winner, who was awarded this special event for making a donation to the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
After the show, Lisa tweeted a few details about the performance:
Was that a dream?? She sang Touch My Body, My All, Hero, You're Mine (Eternal), and by request Slipping Away and Lead the Way!! Pics soon!!

I have no clue what she is doing this era...we are 5 singles deep into an album that has not even been released (if we include "Almost Home") . Every time one flops, its called a buzz single. I hope this one does something as I kinda dig it. I also REALLY liked #beautiful, which was a modest hit.
If this one bombs, when the album comes out, are we going to get the 6th lead single?

Mariah on Power 105: SHADE!!! That applies to probably 75% of singer/songwriters. If beyonce falls into that category, then sure she was talking about her. But, not her specifically. Mimi should cancel this current album. Just make a third Xmas album instead. WITHOUT JD!!!

I would be here for this power ballad. soundcloud.com/cloudryder-1/untitled-2/s-k8gQJJoey replied to Jacques and said they were close to budget limit, but they would still consider his mix after he finishes it. I think they will. Joey is fixing the new vocal track for him (I had to double it and add a phaser to the clip above).

Her personality is very jarring lately. I love her personality, but the fact that she feels the need to inject it every 5 seconds in an interview rather than just answer the questions asked of her is very off putting. I swear if she pulls at her hair/plays with her hair/fusses with her hair one more time. Woman needs a reality check and fast. Her production on her songs aside from #Beautiful is stale and so are her videos. She needs to save that energy and personality she is putting into her interviews for her music where it matters most. Of the 5 songs she released, I only really loved 1 of them Beautiful, Almost Home and You're Mine are okay. The other 2 are very uninspired.
I think she has some notion of herself that really isn't there at all when it comes to the public.

It depends on the setting of the interview.

I know Mariah can be a professional. You know when Mariah wants to be she can be one of the more intelligent/insightful celebs out there, but we rarely get that side from her. Instead, she would rather give the impression that she is some vain flake.

That's the excuse every stan pulls out when their favorite artist starts flopping and/or no longer lives up to expectations. I've used it with regards to Britney plenty of times.

Mariah on Power 105: SHADE!!! It is only shade if they are guilty of it ;). Mariah has had a heavy hand in all of her writing, I would say. Though the only album I would really say of hers that sounds like she did a bit less of the writing is Memoirs. Memoirs definitely sounds more of a Dream written album.

I think Britney and Mariah are in different category of legend if you want to call it that way. It's like comparing apples and oranges. I'm not sure Mariah will be FINE if she never has a hit again. Isn't she the one who is always obsessed the most with charts?? I recognize all her achievements, but for some reason and I do not know why and it could be unfair, I never see her as a LEGEND. Kind of like as if she doesn't carry the weight to be considered a legend the way other singers are. It's my perception or general perception, but I honestly don't know what it is. I mean I can think of other 80s and 90s people who I can easily connect to that title like Michael, Madonna, Prince, Whitney, but for some reason I can never see Mariah there... She's achieved so much OF COURSE and I'm not denying that. Perhaps it is not accumulating #1s what makes you a legend. Perhaps it is a mix of many other elements and Mariah may be missing some of them... I really DO NOT KNOW.

You're Mine is a cute song, but it's really nothing special. I hope it stalling like this doesn't push the album back even more, it's getting pretty ridiculous at this point. Fans want the album. But I honestly won't be surprised at all if they push it back once again only to release a new 5th lead single. Artists at her age release albums all the time even if the lead single isn't a huge hit, not every song is guaranteed to catch on and be a hit on the charts.
#Beautiful was a moderate hit for a reason, it was a different and fresh sound for Mariah. That single actually made some noise, that's when the album should've been released.

I don't see Island pushing the album back at this point. How much money are they going to put into pushing singles with no album out? It's likely they will have pushed 5 singles between the end of her last project and the release of this album. Unless "You're Mine" or the next single turns into a hit, I don't even see them pushing the album much after it actually comes out. R&B acts rarely break 100k in their first week, with a hit. If the album isn't a success, I'd think they'd cut their losses at that point. I'm just hoping she can head somewhere and hook up with someone who has an actual vision for the future of her career at this point. After LA Reid left IDJ, I don't really think there was anyone left who really believed in her or had an idea of what to do with her. The likelihood of her sustaining mainstream success at this point is extremely slim, but there's no reasons she couldn't score a moderate Urban hit or a string of Urban AC hits and get another Gold album. It's starting to look like TEOM, as an era, was a fluke. I don't think an enormous comeback album and two subsequent lead singles that were major hits is bad like people sometimes say (the whole 'she couldn't sustain her comeback momentum' argument). She was in her late 30s at the time. Most acts who have comebacks at that age or older don't sustain that level of success for very long. Tina Turner had 6 Top 10 Hot 100 hits after her "comeback"; Cher had 4 during her first comeback and 1 during her second; Santana had 4; Jennifer Lopez so far has 1; Madonna so far has 3 (if you count Confessions... as her comeback album following American Life; and 2 of those 3 were not big radio hits). Those are the most successful late career comebacks I can think of off the top of my head. While I don't think ageism exists in the sense that radio just starts blacklisting acts after a certain age, it does become increasingly difficult to appeal to that 14-23 demo (or whatever it is at CHR/Pop these days) as an act ages (for a variety of reasons either directly or indirectly related to age).
