That really wasn't too good, but it wasn't a complete disaster either.

I think it's not a disaster to us because we follow her performances and know she's sounded worse, however, to the general public who don't follow her like we do, I can see why they and the media are going in.

Big singers like Mariah are held up to a high standard, so when they have multiple off notes in one performance, that will definitely be talked about by the media.

The press and other haters can suck it. It wasn't an A performance, but it wasn't an F either. Yes Mariah is held to a higher standard, but even when she's great they don't praise her to the extent they rip her when she's a little off. This performance does not deserve the level of criticism it's getting.

Also someone who was at the taping on Tuesday said Idina Menzel messed up things and did re-takes, as did Seth on his song. Mariah didn't get that benefit. Idina also messed up her big note at the Oscars and people didn't beg her to retire.

When you set the bar high for yourself... you have a lot of expectations and eyes are on you all the time. That's why the press is always ripping on her. It's not always right, but it is what it is.

Mariah's Isolated Vocals

For Mariah, it is awful...for the average person who can sort of carry a tune, its great. But come on folks, don't be deaf to the way she sounded just because you are mega-fans. I love Mariah and think she does some great stuff, this just isn't it.

I am a huge Madonna fan and I can admit there are times when the girl has flopped.

Mariah didn't get that benefit because she was late. And I don't get the Idina argument--she was never nor will ever be as famous as Mariah Carey. Their careers are totally different, and Idina's voice was never as good as Mariah's. But maybe if Mariah had John Travolta introduce her with a hilariously butchered name, people would be focusing on that instead of the performance, as with Idina and the Oscars (for which she should thank her lucky stars).

Mariah's fans' life work is fighting to keep her on this untouchable pedestal, and then are shocked when the rest of the world holds her to that.

That really wasn't good. She had some sweet moments, but I don't see how anyone can sit here and defend those (literal) squeals when she went for those high notes. Her voice is shot. Sad, but true.

Yeah, the performance WAS NOT good. At all. I can't defend it as a fan or as a casual listener either. It was hard to watch. She looked so tortured and uncomfortable and that just made it worse. I don't think any of the negative reviews are out of line.

Yikes. Her head voice is completely gone. Judging by her reaction and ripping off the earpeice, she knew exactly how bad it was too.

Cause even on a bad day, Mariah sounds an infinity times better than those skanks running around on awards shows gyrating their naked asses together. Or maybe thats it. What's strange to me is that folks are bashing this performance, when it's not even the horrid mess it's being made out to be. Lol. Literally, besides two bum spots, it was fine and I think she sang in her mid-range with more ease than she's had in years (it's hilarious how until recently she struggled with her mid-range, but not the upper parts... and it's the other way around now. Her voice really is a mystery). She sounded like s**t on the opening night of her last tour, so to my ears the harsh criticsm then was totally justified.

And, 14887fan, I don't think there's anyone who still thinks her voice is what it used to be.

I find it shocking that this particular performance is getting so much attention. Mariah has done much worse on live television in the past. Like I said before, the performance was decent. Her falsetto obviously wasn't all there. And yes she avoided belting. Her voice cracked two times I believe, and she sang out of key twice. Ok??? That gets all this attention? She has done so much worse. It's quite obvious that the press has turned on Mariah and because people allow themselves to be controlled by the media, they have followed behind them. The isolated audio revealed nothing new that couldn't be heard on the full performance. These hateful people need to go find life and stop fishing for things that simply aren't there. Mariah is only appreciated in Australia I guess. They seemed to love her over there.

I dunno but y'all, but to say someone's voice is "shot" implies that the person can't sing at all. CLEARLY that is not the case, as Mariah proves TIME AND TIME again. Oh...and I will NEVER defend Nick Cannon again after he retweeted that post. "Comedian" aside, this is the mother of your children that you professed your undying love to before God and family and the whole world. Have some fucking class.

That is PRECISELY what happened. I was there during Seth's recording and they did several takes. Mariah would have had the benefit too if she was able to tape the prior night, as previously scheduled. We ALL know what Mariah sounds like when she is in her element. Do I REALLY need to dig up those impromptu jazz performances from those small cocktail bars or whatever?

I agree that her performance is getting undeserved hate, but let's not kid ourselves and hold her in the same standard of performing abilities as the creator of Family Guy. You, me, and the hobo down the street are in his league. Mariah is in a different one and will and should be judged on an entirely different curve.

After hearing the isolated vocals, it changes my view of the performance a bit. Before hearing it, I thought her vocal was kinda mediocre but passable. But her voice is truly fragile. She barely had control of her voice. It wasn't completely terrible, but it wasn't anywhere near good either. I do think the media reaction to her performances are a bit ott (especially considering Taylor "Non-singing ass" Swift is huge, and Mariah has been giving mediocre live vocals for years now).

Maybe it's because I follow Mariah and have heard most of her past performances but I don't think it was that bad.
Her falcetto/head voice was a little shot but her chest voice was ok.
