#6: "I'll Be There"Album: MTV Unplugged EPFirst Reached No. 1: June 20, 1992Chart Run (courtesy of MariahDaily): 13-4-2- *1*-1-2-2-2-5-11-16-24-31-40-52-62-69-70-75-90 Replaced: "Jump" | Kriss KrossReplaced By: "Baby Got Back" | Sir Mix-A-LotShout-out to Trey Lorenz, who obviously should've been credited, since they performed this as a duet. I assume he was excluded due to label politics/BS? ( "We're not letting our star act share billing with some random back-up singer!") Also, I believe this is considered to be her real "breakthrough" hit on the international level? She'd obviously charted in many countries before, but I think this was seen as her first true global smash. "I'll Be There" sold 478k and isn't Gold. You would have thought Sony if Sony was going to press that many, they could have at least shipped out 500k so the song could have gone Gold. I mean, what would have another 25k mattered? Anyway, you can hear some Mariah in here:

I didn't know TGIFY hit #1 in its second week of sales. That's kind of impressive imo.

I didn't know TGIFY hit #1 in its second week of sales. That's kind of impressive imo. It was a limited single, too, so not sure how quickly that hurt it. It's obviously a big reason it fell off hard. It's also odd reading those Billboard columns because the week it went to #1 it gained 9.5 million impressions, and the next week it lost 5 million impressions. That doesn't happen often.

IDJ was so damn stupid for NOT pushing GOLD DIGGER'S digital release back one week. Ah, s**t, I'm not a massive Kanye follower, so I didn't realize he was on the same label at the time! IDJ sabotaging Mimi like that :'( We could be getting a 20-track album next month instead of a 19-track one... Though it seems like not many people expected GD to do THAT well right out the gate? Breaking records with that massive 80k+ It was a limited single, too, so not sure how quickly that hurt it. It's obviously a big reason it fell off hard. It's also odd reading those Billboard columns because the week it went to #1 it gained 9.5 million impressions, and the next week it lost 5 million impressions. That doesn't happen often. Sounds like the effects of a well-timed label push to me, which I've read happens on Country radio a lot (labels nudge stations/programmers to get something to No. 1 when it's close, then it falls hard once the label has their No. 1 in the bag and stops caring), but I'm not sure if it was so easily done on Pop back then. Or maybe callout scores came in that week and showed that people just weren't feeling it?

UTS sucked I never understood her obsession with it. It's very 70s R&B and reminds her of listening to Minnie Riperton during her childhood.

UTS sucked I never understood her obsession with it. It was my favorite Mariah song for a very long time and IMO the BEST on DAYDREAM. I will admit it doesn't translate live well as it should.

Does anyone know/remember an interview Mariah gave where she talked about "Emotions" being important in establishing her as more than a ballad singer?

Oh wow, it hit #1 on my birthday! I was new to this country too...I had recently arrived to the US(in a raft[yes I'm Cuban], mind you) that May. That said, Mariah did not get my attention until the following year when I'll Be There came out. Been a lamb ever since. lol Good times... ROMANTIC by Karyn White was a f**kin tune and a half! I don't mind that song replacing Emotions at #1 at all. I agree. "Romantic" is so. Damn. Good.

Kanye performed it that weekend with Jamie Foxx and it immediately flew up iTunes. it was heart wrenching watching it happen live cause you knew Mariah's 17th was blocked.

Yes, Mariah dahhhhling, because "Someday" was a ballad just like the other three singles on the debut. This "Someday" disdain on her part, I'm tellin' ya...
