And now it's time once again for our weekly look back at the Billboard top 10 singles charts for exactly 55, 50, 45, and 40 years ago this week.
March 16, 1959 (for week ending March 22, 1959)
TW LW WK 01 01 06 Venus - Frankie Avalon (2 weeks at #1) 02 02 07 Charlie Brown - The Coasters 03 05 05 Alvin's Harmonica - David Seville And The Chipmunks 04 07 08 It's Just A Matter Of Time - Brook Benton 05 03 15 Stagger Lee - Lloyd Price 06 06 08 I've Had It - The Bell Notes 07 04 17 Donna - Ritchie Valens 08 15 08 Tragedy - Thomas Wayne 09 19 04 Never Be Anyone Else But You - Ricky Nelson 10 12 11 Peter Gunn - Ray Anthony and His Orchestra
The Beatles made Hot 100 history again the week ending March 21st, 1964 when "She Loves You" finally displaced "I Want To Hold Your Hand" in the #1 position after holding at #2 for 4 consecutive weeks. This not only gave the Beatles their second consecutive #1 hit, it also made them the first artists since Elvis to replace themselves at #1 on the Billboard singles chart. Today, since a number of other artists have accomplished this feat, it is easy to forget just how rare an occurrence it really was back then. After the Beatles, no other artist would manage to replace themselves at #1 on the Hot 100 for many, many years.
And if that wasn't enough, yet another Beatles song, their cover of "Twist And Shout," jumped from #55 to #7 this same week giving them 4 songs in the top 10 at the same time. It would be safe to say, that at this point, Beatlemania was in full swing, and teenagers couldn't get enough of them.
March 21, 1964
TW LW WK 01 02 09 She Loves You - The Beatles (1 week at #1) 2nd Beatles song to go to #1 02 01 10 I Want To Hold Your Hand - The Beatles 03 03 08 Please Please Me - The Beatles 04 04 08 Dawn (Go Away) - The Four Seasons 05 07 06 Fun, Fun, Fun - The Beach Boys 06 06 09 Navy Blue - Diane Renay 07 55 02 Twist And Shout - The Beatles 08 05 12 Java - Al Hirt 09 10 08 I Love You More And More Every Day - Al Martino 10 13 06 Hello Dolly! - Louis Armstrong
March 22, 1969
TW LW WK 01 01 08 Dizzy - Tommy Roe (2 weeks at #1) 02 02 09 Proud Mary - Creedence Clearwater Revival 03 05 07 Traces - Classics IV Featuring Dennis Yost 04 04 12 Build Me Up Buttercup - The Foundations 05 08 09 Indian Giver - 1910 Fruitgum Co 06 09 07 Time Of The Season - The Zombies 07 07 08 This Girl's In Love With You - Dionne Warwick 08 03 17 Everyday People - Sly & The Family Stone 09 06 15 Crimson And Clover - Tommy James And The Shondells 10 11 06 Run Away Child, Running Wild - The Temptations
March 23, 1974
TW LW WK 01 03 10 Dark Lady - Cher (1 week at #1) 02 01 11 Seasons In The Sun - Terry Jacks 03 04 09 Sunshine On My Shoulders - John Denver 04 02 12 Boogie Down - Eddie Kendricks 05 06 08 Mockingbird - Carly Simon & James Taylor 06 12 06 Bennie And The Jets - Elton John 07 14 06 Hooked On A Feeling - Blue Swede 08 10 07 Jet - Paul McCartney & Wings 09 11 11 Eres Tu (Touch The Wind) - Mocedades 10 07 16 Jungle Boogie - Kool & The Gang

The March 23 chart- almost a year prior to my birth. Cherilyn scoring the third No. 1 in her "story-songs" trilogy.

Speaking of Cher and story-songs, did you know that Cher was the one that they originally wanted to sing "The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia?" It's true, but Sonny didn't want Cher to be known for only doing "dark" story-songs so he turned it down on her behalf and it went on to be the only #1 hit for The Carol Burnett Show's Vicki Lawrence. True story.

^Yes, I believe I read that not too long ago. I can hear Cher singing that one. (Of course, Reba McEntire covered it later on).

True story. That is funny. Certain #1 for Cher and DL would be her last major hit until 1979's TMH. Sonny got it all wrong there.

Weird how Demi's version of "Let It Go" is more popular on VEVO, while Idina's version is bigger on Spotify.

The original version is still more popular on YouTube. The problem is that a user uploaded version of the movie clip went viral before Disney uploaded the clip to VEVO. That user uploaded video that goes through YouTube is still the more popular video. Thankfully both count towards YouTube's streaming for Billboard, but only the less popular version counts towards VEVO's chart.

To contribute to the discussion: The "Let it Go" uploaded by WD Animation Studios, has 134 million+ views (non-Vevo), while the DisneyMsuicVevo one has "just" 9.3m or so.

Top 10 Prediction:
1. Happy (more than 50% lead over #2 song, one must be high to think there is any chance it won't be #1) 2. Dark Horse (also still strong in the top 2, 20-25% lead over the #3 song) 3. All of Me 4. Talk Dirty (it'll be close between 3 and 4 though, could be either way for these two) 5. Team (I may be wrong about it being higher than Pompeii, in which case it will probably never hit the top 5, but I calculated a bit more points for Team than for Pompeii, but it could be a lot of ambiguity for the streaming totals for the two songs) 6. Pompeii 7. Drunk in Love 8. Let it Go (thanks to a 60% sales boost) 9. Counting Stars 10. Timber
Say Something looks like it will fall out this week, probably to #12 and The Man will rise to #11...I could be wrong though as I have been many of the previous weeks...

Idina's version of Let It Go will end being a bigger hit than any Demi single. Kind of hilarious since they got Demi to record the song expecting her to turn it into a bigger hit.

Paramore (and/or their label) are very wise to send Ain't It Fun for adds on spring. It's a perfect summery-but-a-reality-check type of song and catchy too.

www.billboard.com/articles/news/5930454/rick-ross-rules-with-fifth-no-1-album-on-billboard-200Over on the Digital Songs chart, Pharrell's "Happy" remains at No. 1, selling 490,000 downloads — the biggest week for a digital song since Katy Perry's "Roar" debuted with 557,000 in the week ending Aug. 18, 2013. Overall, "Happy" tallies the 13th-largest sales week ever for a digital song and the eighth-largest for a non-debuting title. John Legend's "All of Me" reaches a new peak and its largest sales week as it jumps 4-2 with 210,000 (up 6%). It displaces Jason Derulo's "Talk Dirty" (featuring 2 Chainz), which falls 2-3 with 195,000 (down 10%). In the week after it won the Academy Award for best original song, "Let It Go," as performed by Idina Menzel, jumps 5-4 with its best sales week yet: 185,000 (up 42%). Itstotal sales rise to 1.7 million. Perry's "Dark Horse," featuring Juicy J, slips 3-5 with 182,000 (down 14%) while Bastille's "Pompeii" is steady at No. 6 with 117,000 (down 8%). Coldplay's new song "Magic" debuts at No. 7 with 114,000. The cut was released March 3, and is the first single from the band's forthcoming studio album, "Ghost Stories," which is due May 19. The rock band's last album, 2011's "Mylo Xyloto," was led by the single "Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall," which debuted at No. 17 on Digital Songs with 85,000 from only three days of sales. A week later, after its first full week of availability, it jumped to No. 7 with 136,000. Aloe Blacc's "The Man" descends 7-8 with 108,000 (down 10%), and Lorde's "Team" is a non-mover at No. 9 with 90,000 (down 10%). The Chainsmokers' fast-rising hit "#SELFIE" zooms from No. 20 to No. 10 with 88,000 sold (up 64%). The cut also rises 33-27 on the Pop Songs airplay chart (known as Mainstream Top 40 on Billboard.biz). Digital track sales this past week totaled 23.04 million downloads, up less than 1% compared with last week (22.99 million) and down 9% stacked next to the comparable week of 2013 (25.4 million). Year-to-date track sales are at 247.1 million, down 11% compared with the same total at this point last year (278.8 million).

#10. Up 64%. I am beginning to become terrified that #SELFIE will be a big hit.
