Who is Sam Smith? he's high up on iTunes w/ Stay W/ Me. www.hitsdailydouble.com/news/rumormill.cgiICYMI: Sam Smith didn’t just formally introduce himself to American with his SNL performance this weekend, he emphatically moved the needle, as his single “Stay With Me” jumped into the iTunes Top 10, while the pre-order for his 6/17 debut album In the Lonely Hour rocketed into the Top 5, joining the introductory EP from his Capitol labelmates 5 Seconds of Summer on the eve of its release. There’s no question that Steve Barnett's CMG is heating up—the label will finish Q1 at #2 in frontline marketshare and #3 in TEA (see story). Is Capitol about to become a bona fide player in the marketshare derby? (3/31a)

^ Note that, combining 2nd versions, Happy and Let It Go are #1 and #2 on Spotify respectively. Not necessarily. It's the Demi Lovato version. When I open the Spotify application on my computer, it shows Idina at #5 with Demi's version at #45 (probably a different chart tracking period from the Spotify website). Pharrell shows up at #1 combined in the U.S. Top 100 in the Spotify program though.

Doing this early this week before all the board April Fool's Day craziness.
And now it's time once again for our weekly look back at the Billboard Hot 100 top 10 charts of exactly 55, 50, 45, and 40 years ago this week.
April 6, 1959 (for week ending April 11, 1959)
TW LW WK 01 01 09 Venus - Frankie Avalon (5 weeks at #1) 02 02 05 Come Softly To Me - The Fleetwoods 03 04 11 It's Just A Matter Of Time - Brook Benton 04 08 08 Pink Shoe Laces - Dodie Stevens 05 05 11 Tragedy - Thomas Wayne 06 07 07 Never Be Anyone Else But You - Ricky Nelson 07 03 10 Charlie Brown - The Coasters 08 06 08 Alvin's Harmonica - David Seville And The Chipmunks 09 10 06 It's Late - Ricky Nelson 10 14 05 Guitar Boogie Shuffle - The Virtues
April 11, 1964
TW LW WK 01 01 03 Can't Buy Me Love - The Beatles (2 weeks at #1) 02 02 05 Twist And Shout - The Beatles 03 06 08 Suspicion - Terry Stafford 04 03 12 She Loves You - The Beatles 05 07 09 Hello, Dolly! - Louis Armstrong 06 08 07 The Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss) - Betty Everett 07 04 13 I Want To Hold Your Hand - The Beatles 08 10 09 Glad All Over - The Dave Clark Five 09 05 11 Please Please Me - The Beatles 10 14 07 Don't Let The Rain Come Down (Crooked Little Man) - The Serendipity Singers
Not too many hit songs come from Broadway shows, but it does happen on occasion. #1 songs from Broadway shows are even a more rare occurrence. In fact before The 5th Dimension's "Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In" topped the Hot 100 the week ending April 12th, 1969, it hadn't happened since 1964, when Louis Armstrong had taken his version of "Hello, Dolly!" to #1.
"Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In (The Flesh Failures)" was from the "tribal love/rock musical" Hair, which opened on Broadway in April 1968. All the members of The 5th Dimension had gone to see the musical and had liked the music so much that they wanted to do their own version of a couple of the songs from the score. They ended up picking the opening number "Aquarius", and the show's finale "Let The Sunshine In (The Flesh Failures)" and doing what today would be called a "mashup" of them.
This combo turned out to be a big hit and ended up topping the Hot 100 for 6 weeks.
And although they had by far the most successful one, The 5th Dimension weren't alone in 1969 in deciding to do their own pop version of a Hair song; that same April 12th, 1969 chart, also had the Cowsills' version of the show's title song "Hair" coming in at #8 on it as well.
April 12, 1969
TW LW WK 01 02 06 Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In (The Flesh Failures) - The 5th Dimension (1 week at #1) 02 04 07 You've Made Me So Very Happy - Blood, Sweat & Tears 03 01 11 Dizzy - Tommy Roe 04 05 07 Galveston - Glen Campbell 05 03 10 Time Of The Season - The Zombies 06 07 07 Only The Strong Survive - Jerry Butler 07 14 05 It's Your Thing - The Isley Brothers 08 18 05 Hair - The Cowsills 09 06 09 Run Away Child, Running Wild - The Temptations 10 13 09 Twenty-Five Miles - Edwin Starr
April 13, 1974
TW LW WK 01 02 09 Bennie And The Jets - Elton John (1 week at #1) 02 01 09 Hooked On A Feeling - Blue Swede 03 08 07 TSOP (The Sound Of Philadelphia) - MFSB featuring The Three Degrees 04 05 08 The Lord's Prayer - Sister Janet Mead 05 06 14 Come And Get Your Love - Redbone 06 03 12 Sunshine On My Shoulders - John Denver 07 10 09 Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me - Gladys Knight & The Pips 08 04 14 Seasons In The Sun - Terry Jacks 09 12 06 Oh My My - Ringo Starr 10 09 11 Mockingbird - Carly Simon & James Taylor

Is it called a mash up when only two songs are sampled? Is it a medley when it becomes more than two? Because I'm sure there must have been a medley that went to number one before that...

I can only speak for the rock era and forward but as far as I know there were no medleys or mashups that went to #1 before "Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In". Not on the Hot 100 anyway.

are DJ Earworm's mashups not eligible for the Hot 100 or are they just not popular enough to be on it?

peigan- it looks like we may have been spared the April Fools' "craziness." :)
Last week, what caused the streaming surge for Idina Menzel's "Let it Go?" I don't recall seeing it on Vevo.
And, remember, the Vevo tracking period differs from Billboard's by one day (ending Saturday rather than Sunday).
