There is 100M AI between Dark Horse and the next gaining song, it'll be at #3 for a while.

EDIT: oh you said the next GAINING song...we'll TD is still gaining, it just, decreased today for some reason...I think it's still gonna grow to more AI than DH in 2 weeks or so...

A song being "Timeless" has nothing to do with chart runs in its initial life. A song being "timeless" would mean that it has multiple lives. Lots of classics out there that did not come anywhere near #1 on initial release but have held up well But "Happy" is such a big international hit so it has wide and cross genre appeal. Only time will tell if it becomes a classic but it's got a good start towards that. I do agree though it's not just about getting number one. Some big hits like "Somebody I Used to Know" I barely hear anymore now.

Yes, it's just a tad early to say whether "Happy" will endure in the long run. :)

An example (one of countless but my favorite one)
Don't Stop Believin - Journey
Initial chart run #9 in 1981
Since then has been used in TV shows, movies, sporting events and is one of the biggest selling singles of the last 10 years
The initial peak suddenly becomes irrelevant
Now one in reverse
Huge #1 hits that sound sappy and dated, from the same era "Ebony and Ivory" - Paul McCartney - seven weeks at #1 initially but many singles have clearly held up better from Paul McCartney

I see Demi Is having yet another airplay hit that is not resonating with audiences sales wise.
Hmmm.

Looks like All of Me might hit #1 on radio this week but Sing will snatch the airplay gainer nod away from AOM this week...

Another example - "Take A Bow" is Madonna's biggest chart hit. "Into the Groove" wasn't allowed to chart because B-side of 12-inch single. Which do you think most people think is bigger? As far as M's signature hits, TAB probably doesn't enter the discussion despite it's chart achievements. Same could be said for AIWFCIY, ineligible to chart before 2012 (except for that weird remix in 1999?), yet is a playlist and sales winner each season. Compare that to OSD (the 16-week champ). I haven't heard that song on the radio in years. Nothing. It's always fascinating to speculate what songs might become classics and which ones are just stops along a certain place and time. And here's the best proof: 1 1 GYPSYS, TRAMPS AND THIEVES –•– Cher (Kapp)-9 (2 weeks at #1) 2 2 THEME FROM “SHAFT” –•– Isaac Hayes (Enterprise)-5 3 4 IMAGINE –•– John Lennon Plastic Ono Band (Apple)-4 GT&T & TFS (swapped places the following week), Imagine peaked at #3, which song is most iconic?

TAB spent the longest amount of time at No. 1 for Madge, but "Like a Virgin" would be her biggest chart hit, per Billboard's Madonna 50 ranking. ;) With its airplay and sales, "Groove" likely would have been a contender for the top spot (12-inch sales were that strong for the time).
Initial chart performance tells nothing but of-the-moment chart success.

Imo songs that are more AC and HAC favourable are more likely to be timeless due to their appeal to audiences for extended periods of time. For example, Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls. I still hear it all the time on the radio and it never feels like it's getting old.

Blurred Lines was lifted from a Marvin Gaye song. I'm talking sales, airplay, chart standing, worldwide appeal, and overall awesome of song. All of those factors and It's a timeless song. I'm just saying a case could be made. Especially if it stands the test of time. With the way the Hot 100 is structured now (very little chart movement week to week), I'm guessing we'll have another 10 week #1 song this year alone. Sales/airplay are strong for sure, but timeless? It's way too early to tell how the song will stand up. I'm not a huge fan of the song like I was some of the big songs from previous years, but I don't dislike it. I just don't like posters who claim xyz song is the best of all time based on their preference without hard empirical data. There have been lots of songs that have sold more, played more per station per week, and so forth. It's a good song and I don't want to disagree with everything you say, but let's take a wait and see approach :) Yeah but we would never agree on the greatest song of all time. It's impossible. I'm just saying in my opinion it's one of the greatest pop songs of all time and I think that it would be a number one hit in any year it was released

Lana Del Rey's 'West Coast' Set For Strong Hot 100 Debut
Her new song appears headed for the list's top half next week thanks to expected high sales following her buzzworthy Coachella set
Lana Del Rey's new single "West Coast" looks likely to debut in the upper half of next week's Billboard Hot 100. Highlights of the chart, which blends songs' sales data, via Nielsen SoundScan, and airplay and streaming figures, according to Nielsen BDS, will post on Billboard.com on Wednesday (April 23), while the survey will update in full the following day.
Industry sources suggest that the song, the studio version of which was made available for purchase on Monday (14) after she'd premiered the song live the night before for throngs of fans at the Coachella festival, could sell 110,000-120,000 downloads for the SoundScan tracking week ending Sunday (20). While the track is not yet being actively promoted to radio by Interscope Records, its sales and any early airplay and streaming should spur a start in the Hot 100's top 50, with a top 40, or higher, launch possible.
Del Rey has charted three titles on the Hot 100 so far: "Video Games," which spent a week at No. 91 (Jan. 28, 2012); "Young and Beautiful," which reached No. 22 last June; and "Summertime Sadness," which soared to No. 6 in September after it was remixed by Cedric Gervais.
She co-wrote "Coast" with Rick Nowels, who also co-wrote "Young" and "Summertime" and has been a chart visitor since the mid-'80s, having penned hits for and/or with Belinda Carlisle (the No. 1 "Heaven Is a Place on Earth"), Madonna, Dido, John Legend, Colbie Caillat and others.
"People are starving for real artistry," Nowels told Billboard last year. "As more people hear [Del Rey's] music, she's gaining more fans."
Del Rey is working with the Black Keys' Dan Auerbach on her new album, "Ultraviolence." While a release date has not been announced for the set, sources say it won't reach retailers before June. Her major label debut, "Born to Die," crossed the one million-sold mark in March, according to SoundScan. The set debuted and peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart following its release on Jan. 31, 2012. She followed with the "Paradise" EP later that year, which hit No. 10 and has sold 332,000.
Del Rey's Coachella performance and anticipation for her new music has already resulted in gains for her social profile. She was the most-mentioned artist during the first weekend of Coachella last weekend, according to data gathered and compiled by Twitter. She rises 42-37 on Billboard's Social 50 chart this week, with 137,000 mentions of her name on Twitter (up 158 percent over the previous week) and an 83 percent rise in conversation on Facebook.

I see Demi Is having yet another airplay hit that is not resonating with audiences sales wise. Hmmm. This happens for both Demi and Selena . I think it might be because of their ties with Disney . People are still getting used to theM. Both of them have a couple hits that have sold 2 million but neither can get a song to 3 million

Yes, it's just a tad early to say whether "Happy" will endure in the long run. :) QUeen Katy determined to overtake Happy with her longevity... 1. PHARRELL WILLIAMS – Happy: 278.644 (- 2.160) 2. JOHN LEGEND – All Of Me: 262.690 (+ 1.560)
3. KATY PERRY – Dark Horse: 206.115 (- 0.212) KATY PERRY – Birthday: 12.466 (+ 1.434) Team plummeting faster than DIL. I guess this is what happens when you have a big explosion and get to the point where the song is overexposed early on vs. having a big hit selling itself and dominating pop...then strategically servicing it to urban radio to balance out and even outperform the loss from the core format. Capitol records and QUeen Katy, their genius has no bounds. If Dark horse sends up ending up the #1 song of 2014 because of longevity...mmm mmm mmm

For the more experienced posters, does the fact that is it Easter weekend lead reduced airplay for new songs in the same way it does around Christmas time, just to a much less extent? Or no impact at all?

From a chart standpoint? Nah, just because the Mediabase numbers are high doesn't mean anything historically because those have clearly been inflated as we've seen over the years. Sales? No. Is it a significant hit? Absolutely. Is it a song that will be a part of the history of the "10s" - almost certainly. However, Blurred Lines has a better case for everything. Blurred Lines was lifted from a Marvin Gaye song. I'm talking sales, airplay, chart standing, worldwide appeal, and overall awesome of song. All of those factors and It's a timeless song. I'm just saying a case could be made. Especially if it stands the test of time. That is very subjective. Saying something is "the best X of all time" is highly subjective and it's an opinion that changes from person to person. I don't even like "Happy," for example. So a case can't be made for any song ever.

But, if we're all being as objective as we can possibly be, I'd bet most of us could agree songs like 'What A Wonderful World', 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' would be classified as 2 of the best songs of all time. I think Happy could stick around for a long time.

That's not the way I'm reading it, though. Stating opinions in a factual matter comes off as annoying to me and it makes it seem like one doesn't have a full grasp on the differences between opinion and fact are. After reading a little further into the conversation, I don't think he originally intended it to come off as snooty as it did.

The Demi airplay Hot 100 peak disparity led me to wonder what's the biggest difference between a Hot 100 airplay top 10 and its Hot 100 peak?
(Excluding obvious situations like the airplay-only rule of the mid late 90s)

The Demi airplay Hot 100 peak disparity led me to wonder what's the biggest difference between a Hot 100 airplay top 10 and its Hot 100 peak? I recall an Amy Grant single making top 10 on airplay and peaking at #72 on sales.
