'Happy' may be rapidly falling on airplay now but its descent will slow at some point. It is falling faster because it had further to fall. Once it drops to normal levels the descent will slow too.
In other words, 'Happy' may not be number one forever, but it won't disappear for a while either.

^ Actually, Happy is falling faster because its decreasing at normal speeds on many more formats at once than a regular song. Its the exact same reason it increased so quickly, except in reverse.

"Happy" is losing so much audience at once because it peaked at all formats at the same time, which is rare. Now it's declining at most of those formats at the same time.

I don't know what will be #1 for 2014 but perhaps, but as we are declaring 'Dark Horse' #1 song of 2014 and it will surpass 'Happy', I would suggest that 'Happy' may be around awhile. 'Blurred Lines' charted for 29 weeks after it left #1 and was still charting even as late as the end of March.

I have to agree, Happy will most likely be #1 this year. If Dark Horse does make it, it would truly be a dark horse.

I would much rather see Happyat #1 year-end than DH...DH didn't even last that long for me...don't forget that Happy is selling twice as much as DH right now, despite all the declines, and correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that Happy sold more this year than Dark Horse...

Though Dark Horse has been vastly outperforming Happy on streaming. Not enough to cancel out sales and airplay, however.

^ and with the new user-generated videos, Happy can get kinda close to DH's streams (maybe about 70%, while having a big lead in sales and airplay)

Wake Me Up has a longer lifespan than Christina Aguleira's career If the song is still on ur mind and getting you mad as fuck in 15 years like Xtina, then yes.

Amazing to see Paramore in the top ten on airplay. It really, really, is, especially after it seemed like their time had passed. Even when "The Only Exception" was a micro-smash in its own right, that felt like a fluke.

Its funny how i mentioned that in January and people kept talking about happy. Well dark horse has to be the best handled accident of all time? A song that wasn't even meant to be a single smashes digitally, then on pop and rhythmic radio. Wasn't it pretty obvious from the start that it was going to be the 3rd single? Unconditionally was the 2nd single and DH outsold it immediately when available. Would Queen Katy lie? 4:07

If it served her purpose of course she would. What does she have to gain from lying about this? Its not like Dark Horse would sell more because she said it wasn't originally planned as a single.

"Unconditionally" was Katy's favorite song on PRISM, much like "Thinking Of You" was her favorite song from her pop debut album. I have a feeling the record company would have wanted "Dark Horse" to be the immediate followup to "Roar" or even the lead single.

per Ask Billboard
Too $hort's entry in the top 10 is his first and it comes 23 years 5 months and 2 weeks after his first single
one week shy of a record of time between first single and first top 10 held by Weird Al Yankovic "Ricky" 1983 to "White and Nerdy" 2006

So with pre-orders, how do they work with the Hot 100, single and album wise? Do the pre-orders add up, then when it's released it's added to the other copies sold for that week and that's it's final total Billboard uses, or is it different?

Pretty sure all the preorders count toward the first day/week sales. It's no different than if someone bought it the first day out. Digital preorders don't really make much sense to me. I guess it's just so that you don't forget you wanted to download the song. Physical preorders made sense because albums in high demand would sell out. Digital can't.

I have a feeling the record company would have wanted "Dark Horse" to be the immediate followup to "Roar" or even the lead single. The label wanted TIHWD to be third single while Katy wanted "Birthday," which indicates that DH was not on their radar as far as single choices go. Not saying that DH was never going to be a single, but for reasons I'll never understand, it was not a priority choice for anyone involved.

TIHWD is catchy as hell, but as a single? No.

1. JOHN LEGEND – All Of Me: 267.156 (+0.486) - Come on John, extend your airplay lead! I need you to get at least one week at #1 on the Hot 100! 10. PARAMORE – Ain’t It Fun: 80.691 (+1.878)- Looks like Ed Sheeran might leap frog this once it's #9, which is nice. 3. KATY PERRY – Dark Horse: 203.690 (+0.159)- Never did I ever expect Katy to get an Urban smash! Keeping that AI above 200mil! JHENE AIKO – The Worst: 57.923 (+0.636) - Love this, hope it does something on pop, would love to see this get into the top 10 at some point. NAUGHTY BOY – La La La f/Sam Smith: 50.623 (+0.646) - Glad to see this still gaining, although not quite the smash I wanted it to be. Hope it explodes at some point!
