^No more Birthday posts, please. This is its 4th week on the Hot 100. Give it time to grow. The fans at UKMix are freaking out too. Relax... All of her singles with the exception of Thinking of You and now Birthday were at least top 20 hits by their fourth week: #5 I Kissed a Girl #20 Hot N Cold #29 Thinking of You #10 Waking Up in Vegas #5 Teenage Dream #9 Firework #3 E.T. #4 Last Friday Night #18 The One That Got Away #4 Wide Awake #16 Unconditionally #29 Birthday Her last three lead singles and Dark Horse were all huge from the start.

I think Birthday is growing more slowly because Dark Horse is hanging around for sooo long. Birthday is still growing in sales and airplay...so I'm not sure why some people are so ready to sound the death knell.

So??? Katy Perry is not the radio darling she used to be. It happens to everyone. Maybe Katy's label is going to have to work at making Birthday a hit? People have been making daily posts for the past 2 weeks that Birthday is flopping. Maybe it's going to be a slow grower? Katy just started her tour. That's where she is going to make her money. Not off a $1.29 single...

^^ I agree with everything you said, But your last comment, just seems out of place for some reason.
M. JACKSON & J. TIMBERLAKE – Love Never Felt So Good: 18.208 (-29.694) OUCH, knew it was coming, but still.

"Roar" and "Dark Horse" were both massive. I don't think Katy has anything to be worried about in terms of her relationship with radio. "Birthday" may not be another record breaker, but it's looking to easily become another Top 10 for her.

Katy just started her tour. That's where she is going to make her money. Not off a $1.29 single... But one doesn't get top 5 hits by touring.

I totally disagree with the statement "Katy Perry isn't the radio darling she used to be"
Umm.... yes. YES SHE IS! All of her singles are freaking top 20 almost instantly, it just is effortless for her to score a hit with radio! That being said, I do think Birthday will still be a hit for her, but just not as big as many of her other singles have been. But just for that fact doesn't mean that Katy's relationship with radio is dwindling... Anyways, I don't like the song, and many of her other songs deserved to be a single other than this, but regardless it will become yet another hit for Katy radio's sweetheart...

We're talking about Birthday cuz it's surprising that it seems to be climbing slow for a single by KatyPerry. Yet it's only been 4 weeks. lol. That's how popular she is.

Does anyone think that Dark Horse will surpass Firework as her biggest hit? I don't recall Firework having huge weeks at #1, it never felt bigger than ET, Roar, or California Gurls to me, but it's surpassed those by ~1 million downloads, so longevity definitely helped it. But Dark Horse is having more longevity than Firework currently, is it not? Hoping Dark Horse can surpass Happy in the year end chart, though I doubt it. Firework was released before the Holiday season and it received a huge increase in sales which is probably the reason why it's sold more. It's also very adult contemporary friendly as it isn't "teeny" like singles such as HnC or CG, so it appeals to a wider audience.

You guys are not making sense at all! Radio has been too kind to Katy and they still are. It's radio who forced "Unconditionally" and now "Birthday" down the general publics throats when they weren't here for it. The Itunes performance of both songs should've been a huge indicator that those two should've never crossed more than 30 million AI and then they should have been dropped.
Radio continues to treat Katy better than any other pop star, but that time will come to an end soon. If Birthday doesn't pick up buzz it will be dropped. Overall I think it will just barely go Top 15 on overall AI, which is way more than it should be getting to begin with.

^ which is why it's clear that Happy is less outdated than Dark Horse and why I'm pissed that Happy is about to fall below DH and at risk of giving up the year-end #1 position to DH. It's selling more than double what DH is selling.

It's selling more than double what DH is selling. I don't really get this statement, of course Dark Horse is selling less it's been on the chart twice as long as Happy so it began declining weeks ago, also since Dark Horse has the advantage of 6 extra weeks on the chart year those points will count towards the year end and 6 weeks more of points is huge when it comes to Katy, if Happy had have debuted in December or November then this would be a different story. Also, does anyone know how the year end radio songs chart is calculated? Do they use peak audience impressions as their final number or is longevity included? In this case Happy reached a huge peak but it's falling so fast the peak seems irrelevant when it comes to weeks on the chart.

Boom Boom Pow debuted more than 3 months into the chart year in 2009 yet it was #1 year-end despite Poker Face being there from January and having a very lengthy run near the top.

^ I managed to edit in my mistakes but I guess you'd already quoted it by then haha
Boom Boom Pow had much larger weeks digitally though did it not? I recall it selling much more than Poker Face did in the 2009 year. Since Poker face was released in September of the previous year it's only real digital spikes would have come from the holiday season then it would of lost points rather quickly.

I think Katy is still a radio darling, it's just a matter of releasing the right material. I just don't think Birthday connects to the audience the way Dark Horse does, for instance.
I teach 10 year old students and they are simply obsessed with Katy Perry. They love her songs, her videos, etc. They hate Unconditionally. They hate Birthday. I can definately see a pattern there.

If Dark Horse manages to beat Happy for year end #1 , all I can say is that it certainly deserves it, coming for Happy like a true Dark Horse! :)

"Her last three lead singles and Dark Horse were all huge from the start" I read it lead singles from albums. Is that not right? Wouldn't the last 3 lead singles: California Girls Wide Awake (even tho it's from a deluxe) Roar

Yes, but those 6 extra weeks for DH won't really mean anything near the end of the year. By then, Happy will likely have it's full chart run accounted for in the year end chart, and even if it somehow lasts longer than the end date of the Billboard calendar year, it's not like Happy's strong run was split between two chart years, all of it is going towards the 2014 year end chart.

I'd be surprised if Happy is the year end #1. Hope so, but don't see it, unless it has some staying power in the Top 10 while it's falling.

PHILLIP PHILLIPS – Raging Fire: 28.943 (+0.507) Really hope they finally give it an add date for pop this week. Still needs to pick up its sales and get top 5 on Hot AC and Triple A.
