Chart Watch: Sex Sells On Hot 100

I detect a theme here: This week's top new entry on the Hot 100 (at #70) is Usher's smoldering "Good Kisser," which is considerably more risqué than the title suggests. (The lyric "Got lipstick on my leg" should tell you what the song is about.) The biggest mover within the chart is "Wiggle" by Jason Derulo featuring Snoop Dogg, a novelty song about a woman's derriere. It leaps from #68 to #24 in its second week.

"Wiggle" lacks the wit of Sir Mix-A-Lot's similarly-focused "Baby Got Back," the #1 song of the summer for 1992. It also lacks the global pop sensibility of Derulo's previous hit, "Talk Dirty." So what does it have going for it? Derulo is hot. And Snoop has been a good luck charm for summer hits by the Pussycat Dolls ("Buttons") and Katy Perry ("California Gurls").

"Wiggle" is already in the top 10 on Hot Digital Songs: #7 (94K). It joins "Talk Dirty," which drops from #8 to #10 on that chart, giving Derulo two of the week's top 10 sellers.

This week's big chart news is Iggy Azalea becoming just the second artist to have the top two songs on Hot Digital Songs concurrently for two weeks. I covered this, and the rest of the top 10 action, in a Chart Watch blog that we posted Wednesday. If you missed it, here's a link. This blog is a look at key movers and debuts below the top 10.

Calvin Harris's "Summer" jumps from #18 to #14 in its eighth week. The song already hit #1 on the U.K.'s Official Singles Chart. This will be the second song titled "Summer" to reach the top 10 on the Hot 100. War scored with a song by that title in September 1976 .… "Am I Wrong" by Nico & Vinz jumps from #26 to #18 in its fourth week. Digital sales rank: #8 (93K). This catchy song, which was first released more than a year ago, has an appealing African vibe and smooth backing harmonies. This has been an international hit for the Norwegian duo Nico & Vinz—Nico Sereba and Vincent Dery.

Luke Bryan's "Play It Again" drops from #17 to #19 in its ninth week. The song peaked at #14. The song is #1 on Hot Country Songs for the fifth week. That's the longest run at #1 since Bryan's previous solo hit, "Drink A Beer."

Sam Smith continues to rock the Hot 100. Naughty Boy's "La La La," on which he is featured, inches up from #21 to #20 in its 12th week. Disclosure's "Latch," on which he is also featured, leaps from #52 to #34 in its eighth week. Smith's own hit, "Stay With Me," jumps from #78 to #69 in its fifth week. "Latch" sounds like something Earth, Wind & Fire might have recorded in the late '70s or early '80s. The song was first released in 2012.

"Love Never Felt So Good" by Michael Jackson & Justin Timberlake drops from #20 to #22 in its second week. Digital sales rank: #6 (101K). Timberlake was just two when Jackson recorded this pop-disco tune in 1983. At that time, with disco winding down (and Prince coming on strong), it might have seemed a little dated. Now it's like a little lost gem.

Katy Perry's "Birthday" jumps from #29 to #25 in its fifth week. The vibrant confection urges us to celebrate every day. The eight-minute video gives Perry a chance to play five different characters—"the world's worst birthday party entertainers" … "She Looks So Perfect" by 5 Seconds Of Summer jumps from #45 to #37 in its sixth week.

MAGIC!'s charming, reggae-shaded "Rude" leaps from #62 to #39 in its third week. The song depicts a man seeking the approval of the father of the woman he plans to marry. The plaintive lyric at the heart of the song: "Why you gotta be so rude/Don't you know I'm human too?" This is the Canadian band's first hit … Coldplay's "A Sky Full Of Stars" drops from #24 to #43 in its second week. Avicii co-produced the song. Digital sales rank: #9 (89K).

"My Eyes" by Blake Shelton featuring Gwen Sebastian leaps from #97 to #57 in its second week … Josh Kaufman's version of the Bonnie Raitt classic "I Can't Make You Love Me" is the week's second-highest new entry at #71. Kaufman is a contestant on The Voice.

Sia's "Chandelier" debuts at #75. It's from her upcoming sixth studio album, 1000 Forms Of Fear. This is Sia's first Hot 100 hit as a lead artist. She reached the top 10 in 2012 as a featured artist on David Guetta's "Titanium" (#7) and Flo Rida's "Wild Ones" (#5).

Hunter Hayes's "Invisible" jumps from #86 to #77 in its 12th week. The song has climbed as high as #44. Hayes' sophomore album, Storyline, enters The Billboard 200 at #3 this week … Christina Grimmie's version of Lil Wayne's "How To Love" debuts at #79. Grimmie is a contestant on The Voice.

Sara Bareilles's "I Choose You" debuts at #81. It's the second chart hit from Bareilles's fourth studio album, The Blessed Unrest…Pharrell Williams's "Come Get It Bae" (featuring an uncredited Miley Cyrus) debuts at #82. It's the second Hot 100 single from Williams' hit album, G I R L .… The Black Keys's "Fever" re-enters the chart at #83. The song has climbed as high as #77. The band's new album Turn Blue is locked in a tight race with Michael Jackson's Xscape for #1 on next week's Billboard 200. Stay tuned.

Brad Paisley's "River Bank" debuts at #88 … "2 On" by Tinashe featuring ScHoolboy Q debuts at #89. Tinashe is a 21-year old R&B pop singer/actress. This is from her upcoming debut album, Aquarius … Brantley Gilbert's "17 Again" debuts at #90. Gilbert's "Bottoms Up" this week becomes the first country song to sell 1M copies in 2014. In two weeks, Gilbert's third studio album, "Just As I Am," will battle it out with Coldplay's "Ghost Stories" for #1.
