Let's be real though, Destiny's Child only had one major hit at the time and was riding the train to One Hit Wonder ville before The Writing's On The Wall came into play, tbh. Both 702 and Destiny's Child debut eras were lackluster. Their debut albums did poorly initially but in time were able to secure plaques. However, though up to that point 702 had already collected three plaques for singles (two gold, one platinum). By the time, they released their sophomore albums, Destiny's Child's stardom rose while 702's faded and Destiny's Child continued on to bigger and greater things. But don't downplay that Where My Girls At? definitely opened up doors for them and helped them venture into other great opportunities. First of all, what other great opportunities? Secondly, what do other opportunities have to do with 702 anyway? The Braxtons aren’t a successful 90s group just because it helped Toni Braxton find a solo career. I also don’t know what Destiny’s Child only having 1 hit off their debut has to do with anything. They went on to have a lot more hits, including some in the 90s. They had more hit albums and singles than 702. The standom here is OOC. First of all I'm not a stan, but I do appreciate their music though. Secondly, they were given the opportunity to sign with Wilhelmina Models and Where My Girls At? introduced them into mainstream outlets that their debut didn't (They were invited to Teen Choice, AMA, etc) Also, they were able secure an AMA nomination thanks to Where My Girls At? and thirdly, Destiny's Child didn't make any real noise until their sophomore album. It was their breakthrough. This is why I said they were on par with 702 in the beginning of their career initially. Destiny's Child only had one more hit in the 90's which was Bills. Bug A Boo barely made a dent and although Say My Name began charting in the late 90's, it more known for being an early 2000's hit if anything else. But look it's all suggestive and opinions anyway. You're entitled to yours and I'm entitled to mines. Last I'll say about it.

Btw, I never disagree with his initial point at all. Nobody thinks of 702 when you think of the 90's. I definitely don't. I was simply just drawing a comparison to other R&B female groups of the 90's when I posted the rank pyramid.

702/Meelah's thread has been arguably slow, why get surprised when posters defend them as a viable girl group in the 90s (and proceed to call it standom)? Leigh, literally no one said J English was wrong about people thinking about 702 & the 90s, I personally just said he was understating them as a group.

Anyway, what have I understated? You agree with my general point. Apart from that all I’ve said is they aren’t one of the top 5 female R&B groups of the 90s. I understand you may not like Destiny's Child, but on an objective level 702 is nowhere near them in terms of hits or notoriety. So what specifically do you disagree with?

And quite honestly, for Unsung’s audience, people who grew up on Black music, perhaps many do think of 702 among other groups and artists when they think of the 90s. That shouldn't be so hard to accept.

Someone mentioned Jade not being bigger than 702 and i have to disagree. They were at least equals. Jade had a few hits that were played a lot. "Don't Walk Away", I Wanna Love you Down and Every Day Of The Week" all hit the Top 20 at number 4, 16 and 20 on the hot 100. Their song "One Woman" also hit num. 22.

All these 90's black girl group mentions, and nobody mentioned Blackgirl with "90's Girl". The hell?

Star > Survivor - I'll give them that much! RIGHT! Star shits on any DC album and "I Still Love You" and "Places" kills anything DC from that era.

Watched their UNSUNG episode this morning. It gave a lot of light on their breakup. All these years, it was painted like Meelah was just a diva who wanted to be solo. Who knew that the sisters were just in their feelings, and pressed that a founding member wasn't the lead singer?! I don't see this reunion going too far, because they still seem to have some tension about shit that happened 20 years ago--even the girl who was in the ORIGINAL lineup in the 90s. When she started crying about something that happened almost 30 years ago my jaw hit the floor.

Unsung had me revisiting their discography, and "Places" is such a hidden gem. The Janet-influence is all over this one.

Their unSung didn't do their catalog justice especially since they didn't secure the license to play "Steelo". They had few Hot 100 hits but their catalog is overall stronger than any DC album. Everyone from my hood bumped 702 and not everyone views popularity by what Billboard reports. 702 were 90s staples and deserve their placement on the pyramid.

"Where My Girls At?" alone was everywhere and easily one of the most omnipresent singles of the late nineties, by anyone.Did you really say that 702 was bigger and is more remembered than Destiny's Child? I just can't. I mean you can hate DC and Beyoncé all you want but the facts (Billboard charts first of all) speak loud and clear.

No. I didn't, lol. Did you read what you quoted? Didn't I read you arguing your way out of a lie for a whole page? lol No. But you quoted me saying "Where My Girls At?" was omnipresent so I was confused? Regardless, I never said 702 "was bigger or more remembered" than Destiny's Child....ever; you just made that up. But if I did and I'm missing it somewhere, please go ahead and quote that.

They had the hits, the album sales and the Hot 100 #1s to back it up. And the critical acclaim.

Ashanti was a girl group in the 90's. They had one low charting R&B song. What's hilarious, I stream music from my cloud all the time through the groove app and it assigns a default picture for each artist. When I go to listen to the solo artist Ashanti, the default picture they use is a picture of the girl group. Poor Ashanti... so d-list, even obscure girl groups get more shine than her. I gagged so fucking hard OMG. This whole thread is pure comedy! I am going to watch the Unsung episode and LMAO more when I hear these exaggerations and overstatements. That said, I loved their sophomore album when it came out, so I might go back and listen to it again. The debut was cute but nothing special. However, Steelo STILL goes hard. Much better than Where My Girls At.

'Where My Girls At' was much bigger than its Billboard Hot 100 peak of #4 suggests. Just going by the 1999 year-end chart, it places significantly higher than #1 hits like ‘Bills’ & ‘Unpretty’. But I don’t need charts to tell me radio, at least in NYC, would not let it go for years. It barely exists as a 90’s song in my imagination because of recurrent play the decade over. But anyway my biggest gripe here is Jomanda getting Opening Acts placement in that otherwise amazing graphic Zinc. shared. ‘Got a Love for You’ is a timeless classic!

Despite all of the back and forth, jenglisbe 's original point still stands: when people think of the 90s, they do not immediately think '702' above all else and it was an exaggeration on Unsung's part to make the episode more dramatic. Nothing more, nothing less. obviously you're not incapable of standing on your own lol and dont need a seal of approval but this post KNOCKS hard! #PREACH

The point is, no matter how hard you hate on superstars and try to hype up these underdogs nobody cares for, the stats will always tell the whole truth. And this is meant in a general sense. #allteanoshade

I’m sure it was Mariah’s idea though since she was in the freestyle scene before signing with Columbia.

You're right it's a legendary cover she was mostly their song writer in other songs and background vocalist and most likely musical director in choosing. Ugh if only they didn't get buried under label mess. They could have had a long career in RNB. Those girls had it.
