#37 Runaway 1995, Design of a Decade: 1986-1996
I call this my bubbly pop feel good go to when I'm in that mood, however that is over simplifying it. This is just beyond a pop diddy, it combines African and Asian influences in its instrumentation and it has a distinct and strong hook, pretty clever if I say so. The way she coos over the beat and overall message is just so cute and gorgeous.
This song was actually kinda major for Janet as it made her the first female to debut in the top 10 of Billboard and overall peaked at #3. This time period for me in the mid 90's will always be my foundation of my musical experience along with this , there was so much great music out at that time. We were truly blessed and took it for granted!
Now it seems every other song on radio is by a new artist, someone who you never heard from before nor probably will hear again, come today, gone tomorrow.
Janet was one of my foundations, staples.what did you guys think of the music video? To use your wording, the Janet era is a big part of the foundation of my musical experience, which is why I'm so fond of that (along with many other songs and albums from 94ish) but this was Janet's first single I got to experience from the get-go and while it's lyrically and musically simple, it's still such a fun light song. It also reached the pop radio Top 10 in only 3 weeks, which was and is still quite rare. I think it peaked at #2 behind Fantasy for a bit.

While the 2 era before "Janet" were massive and made her who she is today, that " Janet" and "Velvet Rope" are still my two favorite albums, one for its melodies and the other one for the mood, vibe.

#36 You 1997, Velvet Rope
This was a personal delight from the first time i listened to the album, Janet trolled everyone here and if you listen to the backing vocals, adlibs and so forth, you would think it was THE KING and NOT THE QUEEN. It's one of those songs that just has that hard edge to it, almost sounds like a funky-rock-hip-hop mashup.
The lyrics and deep nature of the song really is what hooked me in, it just speaks so much truths in regards to being yourself and showing the world your true nature, it struck a nerve back then but so much more now, in light of certain events. I'll let Janet's words speak to you, the deepness contained in this song, is serious. A running theme with Janet's music is truth in a beat and intricate background vocals. There is always more than meets the eye and you have to listen, over and over to get it.
"Spent most your life pretending not to be The one you are but who you choose to see Learned to survive in your fictitious world Does what they think of you determine your worth?
If special's what you feel when you're with them Taken away you feel 'less than' again That's right
You gotta mean what you say You gotta say what you mean Tryin to please everyone Sacrifice your own needs Check in the mirror my friend No lies will be told then Pointin the finger again You can't blame nobody but you"

#38 Miss You Much 1989, Rhythm Nation 1814 Pop classic! :'( #37 Runaway 1995, Design of a Decade: 1986-1996 'Runaway' is probably my least favorite Janet vocal. I never got that much into it, but it's cute. I like how Janet was at the forefront of exploring a Middle-East/Oriental sound. Before Scott Storch made it sort of his signature sound in the early 00s. And let us not forget about the gorgeous 'China Love' from the All For You album..

The "Runaway" video always made me nervous as a kid. Janet jumping on tall monuments and dancing on the wing of an airplane? No ma'am.
But can we talk about the Coolio remix?

It had the opposite effect on me, made me wanna fly like around her lol yes, who the f**k ever thought Coolio would make the song better ?(his lyrics kinda wack)Not me. I actually listen to that remix and its less "bubbly" version today than the original

Mario- Janet was always experimenting with different sounds, not surprised at all. It gets missed alot but there is always so much going on in the background from a musical or vocal aspect when it comes to, Janet.

Miss Jackson is the only one that can rival Mariah's layers of background vocals and harmonies. As already discussed in our PM. ;)

#35 You Want This 1993, Janet
Come on you fully know you want this, this is a well done uptempo bop that is made for us girls. I love everything this song symbolizes, fun, light and pure sex appeal. As if the song itself wasn't perfect, she dragged out QUEEN MC Lyte otherwise known as the female rap goddess for the video. The Supremes sample of "Love Child also was an added benefit.
I love the braids, I love the mid drift, the sexy , taunting and flirtatious visual , which once again proves there isnt a better visual artist than Janet. I use to bump to this all the time and while it hasn't aged as well for me as other Janet uptempo's,its still a force to be reckoned with.
The one thing that impresses most about Janet is that ear for infectious pop melodies, that easily recognizable and stick with you for a life time. Janet set the tone for the boys, the ran and chased her and not the other way around, life lesson for the hawtness among us.
"If you want my future then You better work it boy No it won't come easy no I know you want this By the time I'm through with you You'll be beggin me for more"

#37 Runaway This song is a cute poppy tune, but Janet could do way better. This however won't chance the fact that I got really sentimental when I saw this music video on VH1 Classic like... yesteday. Runaway will always remind me of the summertime.
#36 You I'm so glad You made the list. Wish it was higher tho. This song is the best example that the most honest, pure and unique songs are born from depression, anger, and helplessness. I love the agressive side of Janet, and it just so obvious everytime I listen to this song that Janet really HAD ENOUGH. It just another masterpiece from Janet that is crimmingly ignored, even some devoted Janet fans don't see its real glow. For me, it's without a doubt in my TOP3 tracks from TVR. The biggest treasure in my collection is the extremely rare You promo single that I bought in some random second-hand for 2$, a few years ago. I got REALLY LUCKY.
#35 You Want This I love the sassiness in this tune. Janet was sexy as phuck, and she not only knew it but also had the nerve to take adventage of it. YWT has one of my favorite vocals on Janet. , and the video is is my 2nd favorite after Again.

The hardest part is that once you get into the top 40 of someone who has hundreds of songs, it becomes so hard to separate from #40-10, it really boils down to mood, emotion state , joy and how i feel, could change. The top 10 and more specifically top 2 and even more specifically #1 , easy.

I just want to stop in and say I'm 100% in support of this thread. I love every single song you've listed so far. Also, I agree completely with the quote below. #34 When I Think Of You 1986, Control Me. I Am Justin... said: "My favorite Janet song is "When I Think Of You". I love it because it reminds me of Saturdays as kid. I was a mere 9 y.o. when it was released, but I always remember being giddy and happy when I heard, especially at my grandmother's house (where I would spend alot of time on Saturdays). We would watch music videos and listen to records all the time, she was a music junkie, too. She loved the Control album. And the video was so festive! - xoxo"
I agree with my guest! This song is infectious and everytime I hear it it makes me giddy and happy too, my only downside is that I personally find it a little repetitive, judged on parts of the song and it might have been a top 10! The song was one of many #1's for Janet but the first to reach atop the Billboard 100, but the thing I love about this and why it resonated with me is the feeling of joy it evokes. The lyrics very relatable.
I dunno why but it's just one of the videos that is etched in my mind, sometimes you forget parts of artists videos but we all, well me watched her visuals wit so much intensity we basically memorized every step, every scene, it seems.

Bonus Track/Interlude- Song #46 just barely missed the chart, but serves as a PERFECT interlude to the next track and we know Janet loves those
No this isnt the music video, but a sensational performance of the song by a fan

#33 Rope Burn 1997, Velvet Rope
Well....from the first line when Janet said " my lips hurt" I knew this was going to be special! This song personifies sexuality and between the lyrics, the production and the way she sings it, you're going to feel very sexy, VERY SEXY!.
Janet has that sweet voice and innocence that when she goes in sexually it still comes across as lovely and innocent rather than "nasty" cause we know some girls can take a little too far. It really doesn't even matter what she is singing about though, because if we step back from the sexuality, this is a chill and laid back bop. I love the melodic and vibe creating smoothness to the song. I just think it's one of her more beautiful melodies.
"(tie me) Tie me up, tie me down (make me moan real loud) Make me moan real loud (take off my clothes) Take off my clothes No one has to know Whisperin I wanna feel a soft rope burn (no one has to know) Wanna feel a Rope burn"

Yeeess "Rope Burn" one of the sexiest songs of all time. It truly is. And Janet (and Tina & Shawnette) turned this song OUT on The Velvet Rope tour.

#32 My Need 1997, Velvet Rope
I warned you PLENTY of material of the groundbreaking "Velvet Rope", every chart I have done there is that one song I regret didn't chart higher, "My Need" is that one. I'm a sucker for the laid back flow and beautiful and hypnotic vibe of this song. It's almost reminds me of a quiet storm hip-hop feel with a softer R&B edge though. Janet is vocal smoothness here and love the background vocals , where she coos so hypnotically " tonight, I need,".
People go on and on how what exactly makes a great voice? Here Janet proves that sometimes a subtle style of singing while conveying her overall message is far more effective than unnecessary grunts of power. I give her tone a A++++ here
"I need you Like the flowers need the rain And I need you Like the blues need the pain
And I need you Like the stars need the night I need you Like the waves need the sea"

31 What About 1997, Velvet Rope
Okay, can you say obsession with an album? If you know shit about me its easy to identify why I love this song so much. It's a anthem of self worth and standing in your own skin with strength and sincerity. Its called taking your own power back, while Janet is referencing a love relationship here, it can be applied to any situation in life.
This song is true and true a ANTHEM and I think we all should take a moment and remember the impact of her words and what she gave us in music, while many artists sing about nothing all day, Janet was dropping nuggets of inspiration, social justice and power while making it look so good and racking up the hits, money and accolades. Who said you couldn't do both?
The mix between the softer parts and then the more powerful show of emotion with that moody dark beat, its a perfect combination that will have you listening more and more, slay us Queen! If you ever gone through anything in your life , I'm pretty sure this song is relatable and can help you find your own voice, in your own situation
"What about the times you hit my face What about the times you kept on when I said "no more please" What about those things What about that, what about that What about the times you shamed me What about the times you said you didn't fuck her She only gave you head What about that, what about that
Don't wanna live my life In misery Don't tell me you did it cuz you love me I don't believe
I'm sick and tired Your deceptive games Wonder where you have been I can't live life wondering"

Ok tomorrow we start the TOP 30! and I cheated here. I couldn't cut anything out but I wanted to make room for a song that is technically associated with someone else that is upcoming on the chart its also hers though, so #30 will be a dual, 2 songs for the price of 1.
