Coldplay Chills For Second Week At No. 1; Mariah Carey Debuts At No. 3

Coldplay's "Ghost Stories" holds for a second week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, while the top debut is Mariah Carey's "Me. I Am Mariah . . . The Elusive Chanteuse" at No. 3.

"Ghost Stories" sold 83,000 copies in the week ending June 1, according to Nielsen SoundScan. That's down 78 percent from a week ago, when it launched at No. 1 with 383,000, the biggest sales frame for an album this year.

Two-week sales for “Ghost Stories” stand at 466,000, making it the sixth-largest-selling album of 2014. The soundtrack to "Frozen" continues to rule by far as the year's top seller, with 2.5 million, and remains the only album to have sold 1 million copies in 2014.

Brantley Gilbert's "Just As I Am" also stays steady in the No. 2 slot on the latest Billboard 200, as it sells 65,000 (down 69 percent). It bowed in the runner-up position at week ago with 146,000.

Carey collects her 17th top 10 album as "Me. I Am Mariah . . . The Elusive Chanteuse" enters at No. 3 with 58,000. Her last non-holiday studio effort, 2009's "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel," also debuted at No. 3, but with 168,000.

The debut of “Elusive” is Carey's smallest opening for a non-holiday studio effort since SoundScan started tracking sales in 1991. Her previous low came when 1991's "Emotions" launched at No. 4 with 156,000. Carey has tallied six No. 1 albums between 1991 and 2008.

"Chanteuse" was tentatively earmarked for a release in March 2013, but was then pushed to July 23, then to May 6, 2014 and finally May 27. The promotion for the new set arguably started in August 2012 with the release of the single "Triumphant (Get 'Em)," a song which does not appear on "Chanteuse." The new album's most recently charting single on the Billboard Hot 100 was "You're Mine (Eternal)," which spent one week on the list, peaking at No. 88 (on the March 1-dated chart).

Following Carey on the Billboard 200 is the soundtrack to "Frozen," which remains at No. 4 with just over 58,000 (down 10 percent).

The second of three debuts in the top 10 is Austin Mahone's debut EP, "The Secret," which starts at No. 5 with 46,000. Mahone's long-in-the-works debut comes two-and-a-half years after he first appeared on a Billboard chart, when he bowed on the Social 50 tally dated Nov. 26, 2011. Mahone is aiming to release another album -- a full-length project -- before the end of the year.

The current single from his album, "Mmm Yeah," featuring Pitbull, peaked at No. 49 on the Billboard Hot 100 dated May 3.

The "Now 50" compilation is a non-mover at No. 6 with 41,000 (down 20 percent), Michael Jackson's "Xscape" slips 3-7 with 35,000 (down 48 percent), and The Black Keys' "Turn Blue" dips 5-8 with 32,000 (down 40 percent).

Crowder's "Neon Steeple" rounds out the trio of debuts in the top 10 as it bows at No. 9 with 22,000. The album is the first solo release from David Crowder, who previously fronted The David Crowder Band. That group notched 10 entries on the Billboard 200 between 2003 and 2013, going as high as No. 2 in 2012 with "Give Us Rest."

Iggy Azalea's "The New Classic" closes out the top 10, as it descends 9-10 with 18,000 (down 16 percent).

Over on the Digital Songs chart, Azalea's "Fancy," featuring Charli XCX, holds at No. 1 with 283,000 downloads sold (down 14 percent). Azalea is also in the No. 2 slot as a featured artist on Ariana Grande's "Problem," which sells 243,000 (down 15 percent).

Nico & Vinz's "Am I Wrong" is also stationary as it sits at No. 3 for another week, selling 149,000 (down 5 percent).

MAGIC!'s "Rude" jumps 9-4 with 141,000 (up 25 percent), while DJ Snake & Lil Jon's "Turn Down for What" is steady at No. 5 with 137,000 (down less than 1 percent).

Jason Derulo's "Wiggle," featuring Snoop Dogg, rises 7-6 with 133,000 (up 7 percent), and John Legend's "All of Me" slides 4-7 with 123,000 (down 16 percent).

5 Seconds of Summer earns the chart's highest debut, as "Good Girls" climbs in at No. 8 with 121,000. It's the biggest sales week yet for the pop/rock band, surpassing the 91,000 start of "Don't Stop." Both songs are featured on the band's self-titled full-length album, due for release on July 22.

Pharrell's "Happy" moves 6-9 with 113,000 (down 15 percent), and Sam Smith's "Stay With Me" vaults 18-10 with 103,000 (up 28 percent). It's the first visit to the top 10 for Smith, who has three songs in the top 40 this week. He's also at No. 17 on Disclosure's "Latch" and at No. 36 on Naughty Boy's "La La La."

Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending June 1) totaled 4.2 million units, down 13 percent compared with the sum last week (4.77 million) and down 13 percent compared with the comparable sales week of 2013 (4.80 million). Year-to-date album sales stand at 102.91 million, down 15 percent compared with the same total at this point last year (121.4 million).

Digital track sales this past week totaled 20.8 million downloads, down 6 percent compared with last week (22.1 million) and down 14 percent stacked next to the comparable week of 2013 (24.2 million). Year-to-date track sales are at 508.4 million, down 12 percent compared with the same total at this point last year (579.9 million).

Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2013 when: Queens of the Stone Age's "Like Clockwork" debuted at No. 1 with 91,000 and Daft Punk's "Random Access Memories" fell to the No. 2 slot with 62,000 (down 33 percent) after two weeks at No. 1.

Mariah Carey's first week sales for Me. I Am Mariah…The Elusive Chanteuse are revealed. Michael Jackson continues to chart with Xscape. Meanwhile, Iggy Azalea remains in the Top 10 with The New Classic.

Mariah Carey's Me. I Am Mariah…The Elusive Chanteuse Arrives At #3

Mariah Carey's Me. I Am Mariah…The Elusive Chanteuse album is the #3 album this week. The project, which can be streamed here, sold 58,580 copies. The project is based on a self-portrait that the singer crafted as a child. The portrait appears on the back cover of the disc. “Please don’t judge me for such a simplistic title," Carey said when she announced the project. "Come on, I was only three and a half." The Elusive Chanteuse is Mariah's new nickname, the singer says.

Michal Jackson's Xscape Falls To #7

Michael Jackson's Xscape continues to chart. This week, the project's third week of availability, the effort sold 34,905 units. This is a 48 percent decrease from last week's sales. Overall, the set has sold 258,914 units. Epic Records recently spoke about the album. "Jackson’s essence and integrity, creating the best music you’ve never heard," Epic said.

Iggy Azalea's The New Classic Remains In Top 10

Iggy Azalea's The New Classic continues to chart in the Top 10. The album sold 18,262 units this week, a 16 percent drop from the effort's last week sales. Overall, The New Classic has sold 145,603 copies. The project earned a 2.5 out of 5 in its HipHopDX review. "The New Classic is a musical throne upon which the new blonde princess of Pop can rest her ample posterior," DX says in its review. "As Rap and Pop synergize again—yet this time without significantly embarrassing results—it opens the gate for Iggy Azalea to have an opportunity to shine. Sometimes, when Pop marketing and urban music perfectly commingle, we get Michael Jackson’s Thriller. In other cases, Iggy Azalea’s The New Classic aims high, but ultimately falls flat."

So the HD #s (far as the 'difference' in the sales) were almost identical. The chart placement was the same. Only difference was Hits were 2k less w/ both albums. As the pattern has been..like forever- Barbra is still well ahead of all other females. Madonna has always been second (w/ Mariah never that far behind) but obviously Madonna (at anytime) is going to pull a bit further ahead yet again and get that 21st top 10 album. Plus, she'll pull ahead of Dylan. Then will have a pretty long ways to go to beat Elvis. :/ He'll still be 6 albums ahead. Do-able but unless she puts out more compilations, album releases from her tours, or remix albums/EPs (the least likely) that all somehow squeak the top 10 it's def. gonna take a while. Hope she sees it in her lifetime.

it's somewhat interesting that if we narrow the criteria to Top 5 albums, the race between the 3 leading ladies is much closer:

Barbra = 20 (I'm assuming the Funny Girl and A Star Is Born albums count?)
Mariah = 15
Madonna = 14 (counting Evita)

Mariah's had a shorter career than the other two, but she's been pretty consistent about hitting the Top 5 (with a couple notable exceptions that completely missed the Top 10). :)

Chart Watch: Sales ‘Elusive’ For Mariah

Mariah Carey's new album, Me. I Am Mariah…The Elusive Chanteuse, sold just 58K copies in its first week. That's Carey's lowest first-week sales tally for a non-holiday studio album since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking music sales in 1991. Her previous low was set in 1991, when her sophomore album, Emotions, sold 156K in its first week, according to Billboard.

Carey's album enters The Billboard 200 at #3. That matches the debut and peak position of her last studio album, 2009's Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel. This marks the second time that Carey has fallen short of the #1 spot with back-to-back regular studio albums. (I'm discounting her two holiday albums and her Glitter soundtrack.) She missed #1 with Rainbow (#2 in 1999) and Charmbracelet (#3 in 2002), but then mounted a convincing comeback with The Emancipation Of Mimi. That album not only reached #1, but went on to become the best-selling album of 2005. Does Carey have another comeback in her? Stay tuned.

Coldplay's Ghost Stories holds at #1 for the second week. It's the first album by an artist (as opposed to a multi-artist soundtrack) to spend two or more weeks on top since Beyonce's Beyonce was #1 the last three weeks of 2013.

Ghost Stories is the first rock album to spend two weeks at #1 since Mumford & Sons's Babel, which spent two weeks on top in February 2013 following its Grammy victory as Album of the Year. It's Coldplay's first album to log a second week on top since 2008's Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends. The band's 2011 album Mylo Xyloto was dispatched after a single week on top by Justin Bieber's Christmas album, Under The Mistletoe.

Ghost Stories sold 38K digital copies, which allows it to hold at #1 for the second week on Top Digital Albums.

Coldplay's album didn't fare as well on the U.K.'s Official Albums Chart, where it was bumped to #2 by Sam Smith's debut, In The Lonely Hour. Smith's album is due for release in the U.S. on June 17.

Brantley Gilbert's Just As I Am holds at #2 for the second week. The album holds at #1 on Top Country Albums for the second week.

Frozen holds at #4 for the third week. This is the album's 23rd week in the top five. That's the longest run in the top five for a soundtrack from a theatrically-released movie since The Lion King (another Disney property) had 23 non-consecutive weeks in the top five in 1994-1995. Frozen is #1 on Top Soundtracks for the 27th week. In Japan, the album is #1 for the sixth week (under the title Anna And The Snow Queen.)

Austin Mahone's second EP, The Secret, debuts at #5. It's his first top 10 album or EP. Mahone's eponymous first EP reached #12 last June. Mahone, 17, represents teen heartthrob competition for Justin Bieber, who turned 20 in March. There have been several hit albums with similar titles, including Carly Simon's No Secrets (#1 in 1973) and Toni Braxton's Secrets (#2 in 1997).

Crowder's Neon Steeple debuts at #9. It's the first solo album by the former leader of David Crowder Band. That Contemporary Christian group released six studio albums. The most recent one, Give Us Rest, reached #2 in 2012. This is Crowder's second top 10 album (counting the group's releases). This is the third album with the word "neon" in its title to make the top 10. It follows Arcade Fire's Neon Bible (#2 in 2007) and Chris Young's Neon (#4 in 2011).

"Fancy" by Iggy Azalea featuring Charli XCX holds at #1 on Top Digital Songs for the second week (289K). Will it also hold at #1 on the Hot 100 for the second week? I believe it will. But you'll find out for sure later today when we post my first of two Chart Watch Songs blogs.

Three albums drop out of the top 10 this week. Phillip Phillips's Behind The Light drops from #7 to #20. The Fault In Our Stars soundtrack drops from #8 to #18. Rascal Flatts's Rewind dips from #10 to #11.

Cher Lloyd's sophomore album, Sorry I'm Late, debuts at #12. Her debut, Sticks + Stones, peaked at #9 in 2011. This is the second album with the word "sorry" in its title to make the top 10 in the past couple of years. LMFAO's Sorry For Party Rocking hit #5 in 2012. If you want to go back in time, Gin Blossoms's Congratulations I'm Sorry hit #10 in 1996.

Neil Young's 35th studio album, A Letter Home, debuts at #13. Young first cracked the top 20 in April 1970 with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's Déjà vu. He first hit the top 20 on his own in September of that year with After The Gold Rush. A Letter Home consists of covers of songs by such prized songwriters as Willie Nelson, Gordon Lightfoot, Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan.

Royksopp & Robin's Do It Again debuts at #14. It's the fifth studio album by the Norwegian electronic music duo. Another Norwegian duo, Nico & Vinz, has a current top 10 single on the Hot 100 with "Am I Wrong" … Tedashii's fourth studio album, Below Paradise, debuts at #17.

Michael Jackson's 2003 compilation Number Ones drops from #33 to #44 in its 178th chart week. The album is #1 on Top Catalog Albums for the 31st week. The album has sold 5,054,000 copies to date … The soundtrack to Maleficent debuts at #78. The movie, starring Angelina Jolie, was #1 at the box-office over the weekend.

Rob Zombie's Zombie Horror Picture Show is #1 on Top Music Videos for the second week. It sold 3K copies, bringing its two-week total to 11K.

Coming Attractions: Look for Miranda Lambert's Platinum to debut at #1 next week, with sales in the 130K range. 50 Cent's Animal Ambition: An Untamed Desire To Win will probably open around #4 (30K). Reissues of Led Zeppelin's first three albums may all land in the top 10, with sales of about 25K each. Lucy Hale's Road Between will probably just miss the top 10 (18K). Also due: Now Country 7 and Kelly Price's Sing Pray Love, Vol. 1: Sing.

Brantley Gilbert retains the #2 all-genre slot behind Coldplay and has 277k in just two weeks on the chart.

Brantley Gilbert, as stated above, leads the way at #1 for a second week with “Just As I Am.” He’s followed up by Big Machine Label Group label mate Rascal Flatts at #2 (they’ve sold over 100k in three weeks) with “Rewind.” The trio is followed-up by Luke Bryan at #3 with “Crash My Party” and Florida Georgia Line’s “Here’s To The Good Time” at #4. at #5 is Eric Church with “The Outsiders.”

Hunter Hayes “Storyline,” Blake Shelton’s “Based On A True Story” and Dolly Parton’s “Blue Smoke” in Top 10.

Hunter Hayes’ “Storyline surpassed the 102k mark in its fourth week on the sales chart while Blake Shelton’s “Based On A True Story” is at #7 with 1.251 million albums scanned. At #8 is Dierks Bentley’s “Riser” with sales now at 153k while Dolly Parton’s three week old “Blue Smoke” sits at #9. It has scanned 49k in those three weeks. Finally, at #10 is Cole Swindell’s self-titled debut album.

Notable albums include Jake Owen’s “Days Of Gold”.

The notable albums this week kick off with Johnny Cash’s “The Legend of Johnny Cash,” his triple platinum greatest hits collection. Next, Jake Owen’s album has sold 148k to date and continues to sell thanks to “Beachin’” while Kacey Musgraves is close to Gold with “Same Trailer Different Park.”

Meanwhile, Scotty McCreery’s album has sold roughly 1,000-2,000 more copies than it did last week.
